I love how they are making helicopters capable of hard landings, and rough landings. It's nice to let it slide across the ground on its skids, instead of coming to a full fuckinh stop, or risk blowing up. Really nice and can't wait to do many epic landings
I really like the detail, when You jump off the running helicopter, the counter force of rudder input is gone and it spins. I really hope the realistic physics of vehicles will merge into mil simulation like Arma and we will be able to provide some decent piloting skill into the mix.
Not being able to control cyclic and collective simultaneously isn't particularly realistic, as heli controls are all massively interlinked - adding collective increases torque on the airframe, you counter that by adding yaw pedal, this changes the sideways thrust on the airframe, you counter that by adding cyclic, this changes torque on the airframe... to be smooth in a real heli requires proactive use of the controls rather than just changing one thing at a time. However that might be because of keybinds - if you're using ctrl and shift for collective then trying to use WASD for cyclic means you'd be inputting ctrl/shift+WASD.
So really impressed. However, the issues.... 1' Descent rate is the biggest issue, it's pretty all or nothing. The rate of altitude loss is extremely arcadie. Transitioning into the balanced state for example is inconsistent/unreliable, as down collective is just way too coarse and needs to be graduated much much more than it is. 2' Helicopter controls are just wrong. They're *NOT* inverted by default like they ought to be. Also they can't be inverted separately from solider mouse controls. 3' Inertial effects in the Huey combined with the limited cyclic control needs a big tune up, inertia is bit too much IMO and control authority too low. (love that you can get into pilot induced oscillation but you can't pull out with that little control) 4' Impact tolerance is a little too gooder, maybe it needs some additional damage states. 5' Applying/releasing auto-hover is little glitch.
A big thing with arma 3 helis is the ketbinds you can set up differently and deadzones you can set that can make them easier to fly with mouse and keyboard
the devs are already going to put armed versions of both helicopters in game. they said that the helicopters won't be added to the main game for at least a month. they will be updating the experimental version within that time, probably adding fixes and the armed versions to the experimental. I hope they add 1 with rocket pods and another with door gunners.
Will be interesting, with servers being as small as they are, i dont really know what utility they'll have, because you wouldnt even need 3 helicopters to transport and entire team, meanwhile 3 dudes with rocket launchers and medium machineguns could easily take out these helos if they werent being pinned down with fire. Maybe if the choppers have a cargo feature so you could load them up with medical supplies ammo and general equipment, then that would be pretty awesome, maybe if you could load them up with supplies like the supply trucks, and airlift cargo, say 500 at a time, maybe you could run supplies between distant bases like how the main operations base spawns new supplies, you could fairly quickly run a helo from the main base carrying enough supplies to get a depo up and maybe drop off any friendlies who spawned in at a new post that was recently captured, would be one way to get things running
@PavelKleinCZ I booted up the experimental after posting this and have been trying it out. Its pretty interesting the logistics rework, should prove very interesting
I honestly prefer mouse-based flight with WASD aswell, missing that old Arma 2 flight feeling tbh, I hope they change that feature just slightly rather than what we see right now
Do not fly with WASD (Your landings will suck), bind a mouse button to back cyclic, way easier. Also you have to double tap for the brakes on the mi8. It is *somewhat* realistic for the helicopter to spin if you leave it, you need to apply counter torque to hover a helicopter, so if you take your feet off the pedals it will start to spin.
yes but no. although Reforger now has a flight model, it is very basic when compared to Arma 3's Advanced Flight Model. Reforger FM doesnt account for weight, wind, stress damage and has no remapable inputs for a analog collective - this results in aggressive speed dumps and sudden take offs. further more, there are no options to turn off auto-trim or realistic damage like the AFM offers in Arma 3 (which is where the fun and challenge comes in). Bohemia hasn't officially announced that they'll release a AFM for Reforger but it can be implied they'll add upon the basic flight model with a few options ( like auto-trim) similar to how they added a manual transmission option for jeeps and trucks.
Thanks for this really informative post @CollectiveFX. I didn't feel like I was familiar enough with AFM to make a judgement like this, so it's super helpful that you outlined the differences here!

Yeah the heli taking off on its own is NOT realistic, once you are on the ground with the collective at rest it should just sit, and maybe have a small bit of yaw drift
Can't wait to break the airframe doing a combat landing. Hope they implement other frames soon (*gun ships* *cough cough*)
Unfortunately they won’t be adding gunships due to no anti air but you’ll get weaponized versions
OH-58s and AH-1 Cobras.
KA-80 and Mi-24 Hinds...

I'm impressed by Russian engineering. They effectively combine air and sea technology, turning helis into boats.
It takes a lot of skill to coax a helicopter into the water! (no it doesn't)

i can see door gunners but not rockets yet, if we did get them I would be hype.
Rockets is on the roadmap@@blackyloopy5089
Rockets come later down the line, check the roadmap
I was about to say they need to add rocket pods bc both the Huey and mi8 had rocket pods.
Just bought reforger and got to say the flying physics are so good!
Love the format of this vid!

ARMA3 + Joystick + TrackIR = Dreamy Helicopter Flight.
It makes a huge difference for Arma 3. I'm not sure if TrackIR or joysticks with with Reforger yet
Reforger recognizes TrackIR devices but is bugged in the experimental build. no support for HOTAS as well.@@UselessFodder
time to make some missions! and maybe a vehicle respawn script too :D
holy cow this reminds me so much of A2.. A2 had better helis compared to A3...
Can't wait to fast rope onto the X in Arma 4...
Going to be so freaking cool
The flight model feels between GTA5 and RS2.
Nah its crazy at least for the huey how hard the helicopter can land without taking damage
New sub, greetings from Mexico
Gracias for the sub!
are you still doing video. If so could you do one on arma3 sling load, how to set it up in the editor. thanks
Is this on Xbox too because I can’t find it in the game editor or in multiplayer
This is the experimental branch. I'm not sure if that is accessible from Xbox
Arma 3 heli controls with keyboard are fine use the mouse to direct your movement.
I do use the mouse normally. My point in the video is that flying with just WASD is possible in Reforger in a way that wasn't possible in A3
I was just thinking about this game
Perfect timing!
Can't wait to have some good helo taxi convo, right before we take AA fire and plummet to the earth😅

Sad that Helis being added to a arma game is huge news. A arma game thats a year old should not only just be getting helis.
but there's no players ?
Is it gonna get Abrams, Blackhawk or fighter jets in the future?
not officially from B.I. and modders have already added a Abrams, Blackhawks, and a A-10 plus more.

This is incredibly unrealistic and a major step backward from Arma 3. Disappointing.
How so? It’s better than A3 BFM IMHO
I, too, am interested in hearing why you think this is less realistic
