Our How to Tile Around a Toilet will show you how to accurately cut your tiles to ensure a snug fit. Don’t forget: you can apply the same method when tiling around hand basin pedestals or other obstacles.
When it comes to tiling a bathroom floor, you’re almost guaranteed to encounter obstacles - such as the toilet pedestal. To stay in keeping with the rest of the floor, the tiles for this area need to be accurately cut from a paper template and fitted snugly. Simply watch this video to find out exactly what you need to do. And don’t forget: you can apply the same method when tiling round handbasin pedestals.
Preparation & Planning
Leave this part of the tiling until last, and make sure you leave more than half a tile’s distance from the toilet or handbasin pedestal to the next full tile. The floor must also be primed, clean, dry and level before tiling can begin.
Aftercare
After finishing your tiling project, use a grout protector spray to stop penetration by water, dirt, oil, grease and lime scale. Using this product will help to prolong the life of your grout and keep the area easy to clean.
Getting the job done - hints & tips
Check our video 'How to Cut Tiles' for more methods to cut your tiles to size and for different ways to cut the curves you may need.
Safety
Always use protective gloves and protective goggles whilst cutting tiles.

Most of these comments are mean. I personally have no-one to help so I would do this because all I need tiled since the tile person never returned is around the toilet so if any of you nay sayers to his video want to come and complete the tiling around the toilet for me let me know. This is exactly what I was looking for. All I need is for it to have tile around the toilet.. better than just backerboard showing for years now. He posted what this video was for and it's exactly what I personally was looking for.
That's my old school way of doing it. Im watching from South Africa. My tiler didn't return and im going to do it myself tomorrow
You are awesome! As a woman DIYer laying vinyl tiles in my bathroom, you’ve saved me a headache and money! Thank you.
That's pretty ingenious. I needed to create a template for another complex wood project, and this method worked fantastically... thank you!!!
This is great for those who have anxiety about removing the toilet. I'm sold!
When you do it this way you will damage the tiles when you change the toilet or the wax seal. And it takes 10 times longer..and looks unprofessional.
Best one yet
What a great job. So neat and tidy. God bless.
My husband is adamant about leaving the toilet in place while I tile. Thank you so much! I feel more confident after your video. So many videos on here are NOT as per the description.
Did all go well with your doing the tile? Thanks
Perfect! Putting down peel and stick tiles cause I’m not handy enough to do anything more complicated. And definitely NOT removing toilet for this! Fixing DIY plumbing mistakes is expensive.
Best video I’ve seen so far that actually explained it really good.
WOW. Thank you SO much. Exactly what i needed since my tiling person never returned to do the toilet area tiling.
Those of us working around toilets in our basements needed this, lol. I had to raise my toilet a couple inches on a mortar bed, and I didn't want tile interfering with the bond. Now I'm left to tile around a toilet like in this video. Cool tips, gave me some much needed perspective.
Thanks this helped.
A liitle tip when cutting the paper, try folding it a few times before you cut, it saves a lot of time!
Thank you so much. It’s one of the most simplest ways in which to cut around the toilet. You’ve helped me a lot. Now all I have to do is put it into practice 😫
A template is a wonderful idea! Thanks
Easiest way to make a template that I have seen👍
Extremely helpful! And I feel super empowered to take on this project now. Thank you!
#metoo
absolutely the easiest fastest way to do this! Worked the first time!!! Thanks!!!
Good, clear explanation and easy way!
Very helpful and easy. Thanks for sharing
This should have a million views
Amazing! So much better and easier than everything else I've watched today! 🥂
you could have very bad day :) just joke
Brilliant! Thanks for the help, brother!
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful 👍🏼
The paper template is genius!!!
Thank you for the video bro. 👍
Wickes I love you.Brilliant Video
Thanks alot for the video, this helps alot.
Wouldn’t it be quicker to use the tile cutting machine to take the bulk off the tile first before using the nipper?
That's a really nice method for making a template.
Wow! Thank you so much!
This is phenomenal!! Thanks for sharing this!!!
This solves many questions for me
Your work is perfect
Best way ive seen yet. Imma try it wish me luck
Wow… This is the simplest way I’ve seen yet. It’s awesome!! Thank you so much.😊
Wow this is awesome
BRAVO!!!
Make a video showing how to remove the toilet to replace it without breaking the tile.
This guy is funny 😄
Hello
What size of notch trowel is best for 595mm x 595mm and 9mm thick porcelain flooring tiles ?
Thanks
Commendable
This was good, i really didnt want to remove the toilet today.
This is the best way to do this yet! Good one!
Much better to remove the toilet and tile under. Flexi connector on water inlet makes life easy. Also, if you need to take the toilet out for maintenance it is far easy to move than trying to remove a tiled in toilet.
This method is acceptable if you are not changing you toilet ever or any time soon. There are many designs to the bottoms of toilets, and you will find re-tiling around the toilet when you have to change it and also hope you will be able to find the same tile color and pattern. It's best to tile under the toilet to avoid this headache.
When you say tile adhesive does it have to be floor tile adhesive?
Thank you
I use to be a gc in nyc. In prewar buildings 2nd would war they would have a rule if you removed an original toilet you had to replace all branch plumbing $15000 30 years ago
You could probably save time by cutting straight near the line then nipping the remainder
Rr just remove the toilet and lay 4 whole tiles.
20 tiles later
which is better way, tile around the base of the toilet, or just place the toilet above the tiles? thanks
Take the toilet off and tile. New $10 wax ring and put toilet back on. That is the proper way. Licensed 37 yrs.
Damn!
Remove toilet, it takes 5 minutes, tile under it, refit toilet. Faster and no headache.
The President of The Internemsd
How do you anchor toilet screws into tile ? Sounds like more effort .
Dull, the tile under the toilet won't align with other tiles, or the toilet won't align like earlier... Mxm
Yeah don’t be a hack and just pull the toilet, if you can’t do that then you have no business doing any tile
This is by far the most stupid comment.... If you tiled underneath them the toilet pipe won't align and will leak
Or you could use a contour gauge which you sell, as I can’t move my loo
nice work,but need more accuracy
If the floor is done title I have to remove the title then place the toilet and put down back fresh title?
how about angle grinder
Nice trick, but always first we are laying tiles on the floor and then installing the toilet basin or the bidet.
who else saw this on their UA-cam home page and decided to watch it because they had nothing else better to do? 😂
The project like this step by step is described on the stodoys website and many more plans you can find on that website.
You should just remove the toilet, tile under it, and then replace wax ring and reinstall the toilet. It it easy... I just did it myself when tiling my bathroom. Your template idea is ok for other obstructions but a toilet or a vanity should always be removed... never tile around them.
from pakistan
choclt fite
Smash toilet with a hammer. Tile floor. Buy new toilet.
Lol
Great template but should the wax seal under the toilet fail, all that toilet waist will leak under the tiles and may not be descovered right away.
Thats nasty.
That looks like a huge headache. I'm going to tile up to the toilet flange and place to toilet over the tile. A way cleaner look and when you go to change the toilet seal your not lifting or damaging tiles.
What about angle grinder 🤔
Yeah because lifting a toilet out and tiling under it is just soooooooooo much work.
Is anyone working with you
guddi
Woodglut is nice for that.
If u use a piece of linoleum instead of paper is way easier
You are not supposed to tile around the toilet......The toilet should sit on top of the tiles so next time You need to remove the toilet You can do it in a matter of minutes instead of breaking the tiles.
How many people need to remove their toilet? Answer me that
Or.... cut any silicone, undo 2 screws in the floor, 2 holding the cistern on the wall, turn the ball valve 90° with a screwdriver, undo the inlet pipe and remove the loo, tile the floor and replace the loo. It's probably the same time but a better job.
" How to Toil Around a Toilet "
never do this pull the toilet tile around the flange adjust the flange height with a flange extender. also the floor should be water proofed with a decoupling membrane before laying tile.
So now you have counter sunk your toilet and if it leaks from the wax ring that’s a problem with water sitting under there .
No. Nooo! I feel sorry for anyone who ever has to work on those plumbing fixtures in the future; now that they can't be removed and will possibly break as you get the grout from around them and try to pull that porcelain up. Put tile down first. Period! Then fixtures. These days you have the net for looking up how to do it right or how to reset a commode and sink. This is a prime example of not doing it right.
:-)
Tiling around a bog is dog rough! yuck!

First you remove the toilet then you do your tile that’s how it’s done that’s an Mickey Mouse job you’re doing over there buddy
Don't follow this method at all!!! You should tile under your toilet to create a fully water tight floor. Remove your toilet and tile the whole floor. Then replace your toilet and seal fully around the edge!!
There are 2 best ways. Either remove toilet method. 2nd, use of measure tape. And cut exactly the right shape, maximum 3 mm space gap between tile and toilet. Then coke with silicone
Hmm. I don't know if I can reach my nose to the base of the toilet.
Always remove the toilet! When you go to replace the toilet your tile is going to be all effed up. I see your point, but please use a better example for working around a permanent structure
Clearly you have never tiled before lmao. Shut up
Yeah cos I change my toilet once a month, oh you have too don’t you?
Moron
Utter nonsense. Who in their right mind wouldn't just remove the toilet, tile under it like normal people do and then reinstall the toilet. I can't believe someone who considers themselves a professional would actually release this a video like this.
jgocar24 I would agree, if it was all new work being performed. Meaning, the toilet flange could be set above or below the tile bed.
Not every situation is the same. Sometimes you can do as you suggested whilst at other times you have to work round it ... Its all done according to the situation.
You have a point. But are you going to remove every upstickle? What about a circular concrete callum!
jgocar24 I would not know how to remove the toilet though
@@barbaraclark5470
You found this stupid video. I have confidence that you can find one of the MANY videos showing how to remove and install a toilet.
Get toilet/sink taken out them days are gone
Fire the tiler for A ) using mastic glue, and B ) not lifting the toilet. Shit job guaranteed
Must remove toilet and tile under it also.
This video is absolutely false
Just take the toilet out, what's wrong with people
Jesus you handymen should stop posting videos of things you are not sure of doing.. who the hell cuts a tile with a hand saw in the first place..oh i dont wanna go on with all the things wrong in this video
Bad advice.
This is wrong why of doing it. You showing people.how to mess it up. Tilles should be under a toilet to stop leaks going in to.the floor. Covboy jobs...
