    Call of Cthulhu is my favorite RPG, I think everyone who watches the channel for more than one video knows that. However, due to some fun discussion in the discord channel as well as some confusion on Reddit, I decided to make a video giving a brief explanation of Call of Cthulhu vs Pulp Cthulhu and which one is best for your table.
    Call of Cthulhu is a slow burn terror investigation game where players will want to think about their actions and heavily plan it out because one wrong move can spell disaster for one or more of the characters, Call of Cthulhu is designed to help people think before they act, and soak in all the clues as well as sanity crushing terror that the mythos has to offer.
    On the other hand, Pulp Cthulhu is a great game for those who wish to play characters full of bravado. More akin to traditional RPG's, kicking down the door is something that is encouraged in Pulp Cthulhu. Making quick decisions with your fists is more than welcome in this add on to the Call of Cthulhu game system because you're much more survivable and can handle whatever the mythos throws at you.... at least for a while.
    So which is best for your table? It's really up to the table to decide which would be more engaging for both the Keeper and the players. Do you want Saturday cartoon action and suspense, or crime drama that deals with the horrors of crimes committed by man and.... others?
    We hope Call of Cthulhu Vs. Pulp Cthulhu - Which Is Best For Your Table? helps you figure that out!

    I’ve not had a chance to play pulp. But given the murder hobos I play with they may want to punch ghosts. So I might start DND players there.

      Yeah, I plan to run some one shots to see what they like, but I predict my group will prefer to punch evil in the nose.

    Another movie/ comparison could be alien vs The Mummy, game wise silent hill and early resident evil vs dead space and bouldering punching Resident evil 5.
    Both can scary just in various ways just requires the right moments.

    I've never really been into the whole Cthulhu RPG thing but seeing your passion for this game makes me want to give it another look.

      I guess I just really like the idea of playing regular people getting into extremely dangerous circumstances and trying to role play it out haha.

    Pulp Cthulhu is Indiana Jones and the first two Brendan Fraser Mummy films.
    The two Robert Downey Junior Sherlock films would be Pulp Cthulhu by Gaslight.
    I think I prefer a light Pulp. Maybe not double the hp but give the investigators two pulp talents and the luck rules from Pulp Cthulhu.

    Both games have their merit, but I prefer Call of Cthulhu over Pulp. I love the feeling of helplessness that comes from being a mere mortal. Great video comparing the two!

    In my game when the character dies, the player can choose to continue or roll a new character. If they continue, as they die the darkness gets deeper and deeper until you open your eyes, seeing that it was all just a horrible hallucination, bringing you to the moment before entering combat. You of course pay a sanity cost. 1 d6

    Good video. The 30 points of Luck mechanic in Pulp has saved many a player in my game however it doesn't recharge to full so the next encounter could be deadly (and it was).

    I love both, it really comes down to the players wants! Some people want horror that cant be dealt with, and some people want to blasts tommy guns haha!

      I failed to mention that with the adjustable levels of pulp, people can have it both ways at times! Thanks for watching!

    Pulp! I had terrible Keepers for traditional Call of Cthulhu, so the games weren't fun; it was always "How quick can I get a TPK?" We stopped playing with those guys, but we ended up switching games as well and never made it back to CoC.

    I think I'd rather just play Call of Cthulhu. the pulp side feels great, but why not just play D&D and use Cthulhu? I get it, I totally do, but Pulp feels like a totally different game... which it is so you got me there. I love how passionate you are about it though haha.

    • @gameon_ct

      I've done a Lovecraftian D&D game in the past. Something about Call of Cthulhu and Pulp just hits different.

    Pulp sounds like something I’m trying to avoid as a GM. Tired of the “super hero” builds. Players have become victims to their own desires. There needs to be more consequences to the players stupidity. Recent rpgs have propagated this disease and spoiled so many to quality games

    • @gameon_ct
      @gameon_ct  Рік тому +1

      Pulp does allow you to cheat death so if you're not looking for that, regular Cthulhu sounds great for you!

      @@gameon_ct yeah I have murder hobos who love doing all they can to off rail an adventure. COC seems to afford a tad more control to the keeper than pulp does.

    How easy is it to play a modern game (2022)? I would love to experiment how the mythos would impact the internet, phones and other modern tropes like 5G capability. Also, how appropriate is CoC for an online/remote session? Must be hard to keep the mood/feel...

    • @gameon_ct
      @gameon_ct  2 роки тому

      It's harder for sure, the fact that cell phones exist means keeping people in an isolated cabin is difficult. But the rulebook has rules on how to tweak a classic CoC game into the modern era!

      Remember, cultists can use "find my Iphone" too, they can hack investigator laptops, etc. Internet searches require you to figure out which pages are real info vs. just conspiracy weirdos. Check out the modern day scenario "Viral" for some ideas as well. The 1920's WAS modern when HPL wrote his stories...what might the James Webb telescope see if we point in the right (wrong?) direction? Artificial Intelligence? Nanotech? Modern times are scary too!
