The least powerful of the 5 main Mega Man finally got his commission. He’s last again…sorry poor buddy
It’s interesting to think Cave Story was inspired by the Mega Man classic series, yet Quote has more in common with Mega Man Volnutt, which happens to be the one mainline Mega Man that Quote might stand a chance against due to him being the weakest. All other canonical Mega Men, classic included, would curbstomp Quote.
The irony is that the Shining Laser technically would make him stronger than Classic Megaman, just wouldn't have the stats to compensate (unless you buy him and other characters being able to scale to it directly)

Both of these characters are so underappreciated
The only reason I know Cave Story is because it was the main inspiration for Scourge Of The Universe from Terraria's Calamity Mod. And given how good that song is, I was quite curious about this one. Also, now all the main Mega Man incarnations (at least the ones in the Mega Man BR) have at least one commission so that's pretty cool.
As for the song itself, damn is it cool. As said above I have absolutely zero reference when it comes to Cave Story beyond the fact that I know that it inspired a song which I love so I the most I was expecting was a very energetic and synthetic song with epic sides to it.
And, funnily enough, the track is pretty much exactly that. An extremely catchy, energetic and epic song that feels very heroic and adventurous.
Really I'm a bit bummed out at myself for having zero connection to either franchise or character because this song is so good that I really wish I had more to say on it aside from "this segment's great, this one's amazing, this other one really stands out". I mean, I'm still gonna cover a couple specific sides and segments of the song that stand out and that I have comments on but as a whole this is an "unfortunate" case of the song being simply amazing but having a writing that's simple enough that it doesn't need elaborate descriptions or in-depth analysis to get across how good it is (and also, again there's my ignorance of both characters that doesn't help).
First thing I want to note is of course to elaborate on its qualities I mentioned earlier. As said, it does a wonderful job at feeling very upbeat and energetic with very fast and powerful ascending notes that also double at giving the song an very high scale and heroic feeling. It feels like a video game song alright but it feels like a sort of "adventure's start/end" video game song, the type of thing you'd hear either in the intro to motivate you to play the game or at the end to count you back the adventures you lived while playing the game. And while I can't say if it fits the characters specifically, it definitely fits the vibe that the matchup, its track art and title radiate so I'll say it's a good thing.
And the second thing I want to note above all is just how catchy the song as a whole sounds. This sort of combines with what I said earlier about the track heavily feeling like a classic video game track but I must emphasize how good it is at it. The fact that it has a vast array of similar-sounding melodies would make it seem as if it ends up redundant and boring but instead it varies them in a way that makes them feel all as catchy as can be and dynamic in a really good way. At no one point does the track feel stale or like some of its segments are redundant. It has a similar energy all throughout its duration but it still has a clear progression that's felt where the scales are increasing (more on that in a bit).
Also, I do want to mention that I really like how this song doesn't outright reference Megamania but still feels inspired by it, something more notable in a few segments such as the 2:16-2:26 one where, once again, it isn't outright referencing Megamania but has a very similar vibe to a few of the aforementioned's segments. It's a small thing and could be pure coincidence due to the matchups but regardless it's enjoyable so I'm not complaining.
Now to go back to what I was saying, while the whole entire song has a relatively similar intensity, that being extremely fast and powerful, it still has a clear sense of progression which is appreciated. At the start it sounds more outright uplifting and joyful while, as it progresses it slowly starts to trade that fully joyful and uplifting tone with a, still joyful and uplifting tone, but one that also feels more serious and high-stakes. It's subtle but definitely heard which adds a really nice touch to the song.
And this also leads me to talk about the highlight of this song, that being its ending starting at 2:52. As said above it still keeps that very uplifting and joyful tone but it doubles down on the intensity and power which makes it feel all the more powerful. It truly feels like a "final limit break" type of stuff where the characters just push past their limits to continue fighting even long after their abilities and bodies should have given out. That's even something that's directly audible with how the song slows down into bursts at 3:14 as if to signify its end but instead of truly finishing it just picks back up at 3:23 in a crescendo, as if both characters got a final second wind to finish this battle in the hopes of being the winner that then ends in a similar climactic way except it doesn't start back again to signify that this time there weren't any more second winds. Really solid conclusion to an already great song.
Overall this track is one that I expected barely anything of due to my ignorance of the matchup/characters beyond the basics and that I extremely pleasantly surprised with. Not only does it seem to fit the vibe of the matchup but it is just exquisite in quality as a whole with a ton of memorable and catchy segments that all stand out really well to give out a final product that's generally just great. Wonderful job with this.
I would say Cave Story's influence goes way beyond what some people give it credit for, even original Terraria has a nod to it (the robot hat)
It directly inspired games that are considered way bigger today like Undertale or Oneshot, and i'd say a huge chunk of indie games today have at least some aspect that can be traced back to it, either directly or indirectly. 100% recommended (especially since the original version is still free!)

Kind of mixed on if I want to see Quote on DB (or its successor series) or not. On one hand, Cave Story totally deserves the recognition, but on the other hand, he'd get completely destroyed by just about anyone they have him fight. Poor guy doesn't stand a chance against any of the Blue Bomber iterations, Gunvolt, Geno, Robo, or anyone else.
Before I watched MiA I thought that Quote and Reg were too similar to make for a good matchup, but I've warmed up to it a lot. It's absurdly close and has the potential for a lot of great character moments, but unfortunately it is just never going to happen with how obscure both characters are.
So I guess Volnutt is the best case scenario... eh, at least it's not that big of a stomp. Good track as always.
