If you are just doing chains to your measurements surely you could use any yarn weight you choose?

I just bought acrylic yarn but its like not stretchy and its rough but when its used and braided it is stretchy but im worried i bought the wrong yarn?? Is it supposed to be rough and not stretchy when you havent made some slip stitches
