The expression in Spanish is correct over English. Spanish separates the "I" and "me" from objective and subjective experience. The eternal "I" feels or observes the "me" and it's many changes (having hunger or thirst, feeling pain etc.). This is embodied in "ser" vs "estar" on a human level though.

Yes! When you're talking in past perfect simple, you use "estuve" to say "I was"
