This shows Korine at their best: unlike most acts in the current 'retro scene', who just process oldschool sounds through modern sensibilities (i.e. The Midnight), Korine go a step beyond by taking the 'classic' sound and evolving it in its own terms, bringing something new and nostalgic at the same time, kind of what Electric Youth did with traditional synth-pop in the mid-2010's. This album is Korine's most mature yet.
Why insult The Midnight? You're using their name to insult anyone who attempts to do this music because they are super popular. That's pathetic. They are amazing at what they do. By the way they had a song named Crystalline long before Korine. Maybe you have a comment on that?
@@chipchippahson Sorry you took this the wrong way; I actually listen a lot to The Midnight and consider them amazing musicians, but still feel their sound is more akin to today's sensibilities (which is perfectly valid and fine in my book). Let's see if you get this without being offended: The Midnight (and other less prominent acts) approach the 'retro' aspect of their work 'from the outside looking in', whereas Korine (and similar acts) try to do it like the late 80´s-early 90's just went on, they don't acknowledge the mid-90's and later trends that led to the current mainstream aesthetic. Their sound is thus "more pure" in that sense. But, I repeat, THE MIDNIGHT ARE GREAT, but not "that retro".😁 As for the popularity argument, none of us here follow artists in this scene because they're popular. NewRetroWave (maybe the most popular channel in the scene) has 1.21 M subs. For example, The Weeknd (a current artist that dabbles in 'retro-like' sound) has 32.5 M subs and some of his videos have billions of views. And he's not as leading an artist as maybe Taylor Swift (who uses some 'retro icing' on her aesthetic). I'm glad that The Midnight, or maybe Timecop1983 or M.N. - 1984 for that matter, have a 300k or 100k subs and achieve hundreds of thousands of views in mere months, but it's unfair to use that as a metric of merit given that by the UA-cam-sphere's standards that's fairly little 'popularity' .
Found these guys last night through Fortnite on the Rock & Royale radio station. Been listening non-stop since, Lost in the Dark and Chimera stole my heart. Please keep dropping bangers.. this is truly beautiful. You have gained another fan, definitely in my top 5 artists!! Thank you for creating and bringing us this art, Korine. 🦋
Went to Dance with the Dead here in Vancouver last weekend and Morgan and Trey were on the bill. One of my favourite things is discovering brillant artists by suprise at shows! Korine stole the show so i had to buy some vinyl from bandcamp on the way home. Thank-you for the music feels you bring and look forward to seeing you play again when you are in the Pacific Northwest!
You two are probably my favorite music artist by far. I remember i found your work through vapormemory, it was the night we raise and the cover art had me expecting a different genre, but what i got was something incredibly powerful and emotional. It struck a cord in me and I've been listening ever since. You two are amazing, never forget that!
Wow thanks for the music, just discovered you this week and I feel like I've been sleeping for 5 years not knowing about it. But your song Deicide came on spotify and woke me up out of a dead slumber with lyrics I can so tragically relate to. My favorite movie is Harold and Maude if that tells you anything about my ethos. So burn the world is apt. Keep weeping but it's a good cry. Gonna live, love and get hurt unapologetically and this will be my soundtrack.
amaaaazing sound and melodic essence. things keep interacting in interesting ways, and the emotional up and down makes every drum hit and vocal phrase feel powerful
I love how Synthpop is making a come back
These boys put out some creative tunes. A distinctive sound. You know it's them when you hear them.
Yes, very distinctive sound. Quite brilliant.
Only one boy in the group.
