I bought this amazing PanaLeica 10-25mm 1.7 a month or so ago (paired with my new G9 II), and I'm falling more and more in love with it: the optical quality is perfect at all focal lengths, the AF very fast, the build quality really high, the focal range perfect, and although it's not a compact optic, it's really very light for the size--you can easily take it with you all the time (which wasn't the case with my old A7III + Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8)
This video really hits the nail on the head. For my latest UA-cam video, which I’m in the process of filming, has me using the 28-70mm lens with the S9. While I’m really happy with the combo for B-roll and similar shots, I wish I had seen this video sooner. It’s becoming apparent to me that the 16-28mm and 28-70mm were made as the ideal duo-especially for travel. If I could only take one lens with the S9, I’d agree the 16-28mm would be the better choice. I feel the same way about wanting to capture more of the wider world in my videos. It’s likely going to be my next main investment, so I completely understand where you’re coming from-the only challenge is the cost.
Everything that is said in this video is exactly my thoughts of the last weeks. I am so happy! I need to plan for purchasing a setup on a budget. Thanks bro for clarifying the issue!
I bought the Z6iii and I'm returning it tomorrow. As a Sony and Panasonic shooter I felt like there was such a lack of customization. Silent shooting was completely silent, it's not only E shutter but no confirmation beep sound. You also cannot easily turn off subject detection. So while I would use auto subject detection frequently (animal/human) you could not easily turn off sub detection without either going through the i menu or turning the dial and going through all the other focus options until finding your desired option. Those were only a few of the things I didn't enjoy. It just confirmed my love for Sony and Panasonic.
Lumix has two MFT lenses with 12-60mm. They should also build a larger and better 20-60mm for the l-mount. I'm also 99% sure the hybrid zoom comes to the other new cameras (S5-II, G9-II, GH7) within a few month.
I'm totally into M43, so when I was looking at full-frame cameras, L-Mount system seemed like a natural choice. But, honestly, none of their lenses really get me pumped. I mean, with M43, I've got lenses like the 10-25, 25-50, 12-60, and 228 that always make me want to go out and shoot.
I had the 16-28... sold it only because i never used it. But i have a s9... that hybrid zoom looks freaking interesting. I may have to try that out using my 70-210 canon fd
I love this. First comment to add this: For around ~$2000 USD, I'm planning to get Sigma's 16-28mm + 28-105mm (used. or you could go 50-200). Add two S9's, so add ~$1000 + $1000. Both Sigmas, 2.8 constant, great set of tradeoffs with full frame Lumix IBIS & most (not-overheating) shooting scenarios. For almost the price of one Leica 70-200 f/2.8 ($3500ish), that's two FF setups with hybrid zoom @ 16-42 & 28-157... all versatile & at f/2.8 :-)
The issue with the 10-25mm is the low light performance, because compared to a f1.8 full frame lens, it is really different. Yes you have more depth of field but the little m43 sensor give you approximately the low light performance of a f3.5 full frame lenses on a full frame camera. Also the sharpness, while good, is far from a 28-45mm or 24-70mm S Pro. I still own this 10-25mm because of the zoom range, also the stabilization and rolling shutter are excellent on the G9II, I also like the contrast and rendering of the lens. Something about the contrast is great (and the 25-50mm is even more impressive ... I'm just not sure the price is right. The lens should cost something like 1200-1400$.
That is why many people stick with Sony E mount. You got Tamron 20-40 f/2.8, Sony 20-70 f/4, Tamron 17-50 f/4, all at an affordable price and a compact size.
The 10--25mm looks like an amazing lens and I may very well get one as a result of seeing this,, but, aside from the flexibility of a zoom, why not use prime lenses?
Primes are great if you have the time on a set but they do slow things down quite a bit. A zoom is better for run-n-gun, documentary, real-time shooting.
Man, I’m selling my 28-70 to try my luck with the 24-105 and two primes. I’ve always loved zooms but I really want to give primes a chance for video work. And hopefully that dual IS gives me a major upgrade over the 28-70
Just finally let go of my 10-25 after it sitting for a couple of years. Didn't even depreciate that much! One of my favorite lenses, I agree about the usefulness of the focal range, but m4/3 just couldn't keep up performance-wise so I switched to FF. My 24-105 has been my workhorse for FF, definitely miss the 4mm on the wide end though. Something like the Sony 20-70 f4 from Lumix or Sigma would be most welcome. Even if they could only do 20-60mm, or couldn't go faster than f4, that'd be fine, still very usable. With my 24-105, the DOF is about the same as the 10-25 anyways, as that would be a f3.4 FF equivalent.
Good points and yes an f4 equivalent is fine but I’d really want at least f2.8 to be a unique look/advantage for using full frame over mft. That Leica 10-25mm f1.7 really pushes the upper limits of what’s possible with mft so it’s some tough competition
@@_tographer Who knows if a 20-70 f2.8 is even possible while maintaining sharpness, distortion and CA control, etc. I'm not an optical engineer so I can't answer that, but if I had to guess I would think that it would be, proportionally, the same kind of size increase over a regular 24-70 2.8 type zoom, as the 10-25 is over the 12-35. Meaning, it would be frickin' massive and probably pretty pricey. Maybe even worse than the 28-70 f2 zooms we've seen recently. 20-70 f4, we have seen Sony do at a very reasonable size/cost, with good performance, so we know it is possible.
the compression and the other characteristics of the lens will be lost however and although you can in truth say" the field of view is or angle of view is equivalent" the properties of the given focal length are not... a 16mm lens is always a16mm lens - its the measure of the lenses optical center SO no matter how you crop zoom or adjust the image - its inherent distortions and flaws can never be transformed via this method either---- To avoid confusion I suggest saying "aov or fov of " instead of "it becomes a "
Right right right, I can never give enough disclaimers to satisfy. It’s a cool feature and in PRACTICAL terms, it gives you more reach. Quantify it how you like, my aim is not to mislead, but to simply illustrate the point and the useful value in basic terms
While purchasing the g9ii from a a6400 long time user I also appreciate those ultrawide to standard focal length lenses Lumix FF: 20-60 3.5-5.6、m43 10-25 f1.7 or even the Olympus 8-25 f4(although not as fast) Other brand like Sony FE 20-70、tamron 17-50 but still f4 So really there is currently no FF equivalent lens for that Leica 10-25 at this moment Hoping Lumix would make one in the future ~
A premium 20-60 would be my one lens to rule them all.
@@iamhassan9943 agreed 👍
I wished they just made it an f4 to begin with, that alone as a kit lens would make lumix seem like damn these guys are serious

This video makes want to get the s9 now..
Now that I have the 16-28, working on a follow up video showing it in action with the S9.
@ please dont.. I’ve spent enough this chrsitmas!
@@LJLeeTV 😆 fair enough, let’s hope @Lumix @lumixusa brings the hybrid zoom feature to the S5II… 🤞

A constant 2.8 on that 20-60mm would be just awesome. I'd simply sell my 28-70 to begin getting into it.

Im waiting for the Sigma 18 - 45 cine AF version. This would be the Jack of all traits paired with the 24-105.

You should check out the Sigma 50-100 1.8. Some focus breathing, but the dof compression is sweet at F1.2 with booster.
I do love that lens and have the EF version but unfortunately it’s APS-C so not what I need for full frame L mount
@_tographer Yeah, I meant on Micro 4/3. You can use it on the S5ii in crop mode.
