Today i'm replacing a ball joint on a 2008 Dodge Caliber, these vehicles have issues with lower ball joints. People say then need to replace them every 50-60k or so. This car had almost 100k on it and that ball joint was shot. I don't know just how much longer it would have lasted before it broke. Signs of a worn ball joint are a clunk in the front end while going over bumps. However the real sign is having your tires start to wear funny. You can test for bad ball joints by jacking up the car and grabbing the wheel at 12 or 6 o'clock positions and jerk it. If the ball joint is worn badly then it will move freely otherwise stick a bar under the tire and lift up and look for movement in the ball joint.

Awesome video, appreciate the way you just made it quick and simple. Nice!!!
Like your style bud. Nicely edited video. 👍
How did you aligned the back bolt to control arm.. I tried for hours to align it I even tried putting jack under control arm ..I wasnt work. I was so frustrated that I gave up . Put my old one back on and let sit till I can go to a shop and they can install it..I watch so many videos..I have a 2011 dodge caliber ..I was so eager to learn how to install lower controller arm..
The Axle was not needed to be removed.. Awesome!
Thanks for this video. We just bought a caliber and then two days later slid on ice into a concrete barrier. Pretty sure the control arm is bent so I'll be replacing it.
Can the ball joint be replaced without pulling the control arm completely off? I've never done this, but this was an excellent video. Thanks for teaching us!!
Yes you most definitely can change the ball joint without removing the control arm. Thats why portable ball joint tools exist. If you go to the trouble taking the arm off you may as well use a stationary press to remove and install the joint.
I cant get the pin on the ball joint to come free from the hub assembly. I removed to bolt and tried using a pickle fork but it seems seized up. Ive let it sit with penetrating fluid and still nothing. Any suggestions?
I'm needing to replace my ball joints and tie rod ends in the front of my caliber. A shop where I live quoted it at $930ish (canadian) and that with an air filter added in... I'm not sure if I should bite the bullet and go there or look for a better deal... heck I'd do it myself if I had all the tools 😜
that seems pretty expensive to me
I'm currently removing and installing lower ball joints , one tie rod, and both struts on my 2007 dodge caliber on this fine Sunday. I paid about $203 if I remember correctly for all of the above from rockauto.com. you can rent a ball joint presser
@@georgeallen3269 be careful with rockauto. After 2 different times of them sending the wrong part and I had to go to the trouble and expense of figuring out a way to send it back, loss of time, and aggravation, I have not ordered from them in about 5 years
can you please tell me the bolt sizes on this car the control arm and the ball joint bolt THANK YOU
size sockets do you use to replace lower control arm
Is this a common thing to happen to a Dodge Caibre? I am looking at one to buy, second hand. Thanks!
Don't buy a caliber. Manufacturing defects all over the suspension
got the new control arm back in and ball joint in.... cant get the pinch bolt back in.... dont know why.... I dont wanna take the ball joint back out for fear of breaking boot
my dumbass... ball joint wasnt all the way in lol. looked at yours and saw how it was supposed to look. great video. thanks for posting
Damn 2 years later I had to replace again
How much time did this take you?
Looks like 2 min 36 seconds. DUH

Good job man....
What are the torque specs? Not trying to be a dick but you just did the job why not include them?
You need to look up the torque for the application you are using.
@@TestDontguess why would I watch this video to work on another car? If I'm watching your video on changing the ball joint on a Dodge Caliber then I'm obviously working on the same car. Thus it will have the same torque specs as you applied to the job you performed in the video. You HOPEFULLY torqued your bolts, so why not mention what you torqued them to.
very good
... and after that job is was MFBT. Oh, yeah.
+ManicMechanic007 There is on the other video that will go on my other channel which shows the real life what happens. These videos are just the dumbed down lets make it look easy for those who are offended by swearing
How tf is it DIY 🤣
So wht if i jus replaced both control arms in front should the ball joints be bad
technically the control arms dont need to be replaced unless damaged. it is cheaper for home mechanics if they replace the whole control arm with new ball joints.
