    I travelled this route with my family on a United DC-7B in 1961. It was the only time I saw the Grand Canyon.

    17:54 The airfield in the lower left corner is Naval Air Station North Island, a station I spent some time on. Its home to most of the navy's west coast helicopter squadrons, and home port to 3 or 4 aircraft carriers. You can see two on them docked towards the top of the screen at 18:06. Also, at 18:05, the beach area just above the inboard leading edge of the wing is SEAL Beach. If you've ever seen programs about SEAL selection training, where they are crawling through the sand, or carrying logs on their shoulders, swimming in the surf, and launching boats into the water, thats where it takes place.

      When we used to go to the beach at Coronado, I enjoyed watching the S-3 Viking aircraft landing at North Island. I was a kid in SD. I knew all of the naval aircraft and the carriers home ported there at the time. _Ranger_ and _Kitty Hawk_ for sure, and at least one other. I saw _Enterprise_ there once or twice also. I don't think _Enterprise_ was home ported there. Great memories. There could not have possibly been a better place to be a kid. I wished I'd realized how fortunate I was to live there. It is not the same place it was in 1968. You can't go back, much as I wish I could.

    At 2:05:33 as we're pulling into the gate, another Boeing 737-924, N37466, is parked at the next gate over to the left. Behind the wing, a larger escape hatch is visible, but notably without the 'gray' painted outline that surround the cabin doors and over-wing escape hatches. In the main cabin, these two larger hatches(one on each side) are not visible within the aircraft; only from outside. Essentially, they don't exist for passenger egress and in this case, aren't required.
    This is because some airlines configure the aircraft with fewer seats and by regulation, the additional hatches are not required. Other airlines order their aircraft from Boeing with more seats, thus the extra two escape hatches would need to be fully-functional and accessible to passengers within the aircraft. In a/c 466, Boeing put in these hatches as plugs instead of omitting them, because the airline could conceivably add seats, which would then require these hatches be modified, so that they would be useable by passengers.
    The number of exits is determined by the number of passengers to be carried. The Boeing 727-100 series (short-body) had two main cabin doors, four over-wing hatches, and the 'airstair' door at the tailcone; the Boeing 727-200 (stretched-body) had all those exits, plus two additional hatches located back by the fuselage-mounted engines, to meet regulations because of a higher seating capacity on that model of 727.

    Fantastic view of the airport and wider San Diego area, on what appeared to be the BORDER 7 SID with 270 degree left turn out and around to the north east. I hadn't appreciated just how far south San Diego was in relation to KDEN, until I looked it up on a flight map! Thanks B, good one my friend, regards from the UK :-)

      Since UAL's 737s all have GPS, it was more likely the ZZOOO2 Departure, which follows, more or less, the same track eastbound as the BORDER 7.

    wonder if those two wings on the wing tips are functional and help steer , stabilize plane?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 роки тому +5

      Winglets help by reducing wingtip vortices, which are the twin tornados formed by the difference between the pressure on the upper surface of an airplane's wing and that on the lower surface. This is done to help improve fuel efficiency. By eliminating those vortices, it greatly reduces drag. They don’t have any steering or control abilities.

    • @boeingpilot7002
      @boeingpilot7002 3 роки тому

      @@sla31 Very well put, sir! The 'scimitar' winglets reduce fuel consumption by about 5%.
