I've been watching these videos for an hour. I used to spend every waking moment on my fish hobby. Years passed, life happened and it went on the back burner. Now my youngest son, 11, has shown a huge interest in the hobby. I ordered him 3 tanks, to arrive in a week. He's starting small. 10 gal, 7.5 gal and 2.5 gal. Maybe a beta, shrimp, tetras etc...Watching these vids has been an inspiration. It might be time to rebuild my own tank. It's just like riding a bike I suppose. The video of you missing your rays, brought back memories of my some of my own favorite fish. Thank you.
Debbie Scagliozzo Hai
Midlife Daydreams whys he need 3 tanks...
Same boat. No ones intrested yet but a chore is feeding them at night 😆
It always makes you happy to know the younger generation still have a passion for these amazing amazing animals. Thank you for being in cool parent that supports this hobby as well.
Ugh. I'm so glad I started fish keeping. It's honestly the best thing I could have done for myself in a very long time. Endless amounts of things to learn about the hobby and yeah, it can be stressful, but caring for my fish friends has helping with my anxiety disorder a lot in the past few weeks.
I suffered from bipolar disorder and my socialcworker commented that he had wondered why i suddenly seemed calmer and more stable...then he figured out...it was those darned fish..not sure if it was the bubbles or the hours or getting me into a schedule or what....maybe a combonation of them...but it helped to make my life better!
Best discus breeding discussion I've ever heard.
I agree on your opinion on water parameters. I visited a discus breeder decades ago who uses tap water and does not measure hardnes and ph level but his breeding program is one of the most successful I have ever seen.
A very informative video. Just one thing... I think you mean "parameters" rather than "perimeters" when you speak of water consistency. I recently purchased 10 Red Melon discus from 3 to 5 inches from Wattley and am going to try my hand at fish breeding after a 50 year hiatus from the hobby.
I got a breeding pair from a guy I know Saturday. They laid eggs today, 4 days out. The eggs are dark and looking good so far, so I’m DIY ing discus breeding 😂
Everyone who is starting to get fish or to get discus for their first time, then listen to this guy he's very smart about all these fish lol. I bred a few discus and I got the info from this guy.
For breeding Discus I started with 7 2.5 inch snakeskins, before that I had over a year experience keeping stunted ones I bought from a LFS (didn't know they were stunted at the time). Used water straight from the tap for daily 100% water changes, no need for letting the water age. With-in a year 3 of them where at over 6 inches and end up with 3 pairs. All three pairs started laying eggs in the 75 gallon tank they were in. I can' t remember my water parameters but think the PH was in the 7s, and water hardness was high. One particular pair laid eggs weekly. The eggs never hatched. They would protect them and in three days all the eggs would become white, which at that point they would eat the eggs and then start over. I was under the impression that due to high PH and water hardness the outer shell of the eggs would become too hard for the frys to hatch and needed to invest in an RO system to bring water hardness down and make it soft in order for the eggs to be fertilized and hatch. I end up having to sell the fish and tank soon after due to life circumstances. I'm surprised that your fry hatched in water straight from the tap with above 7 PH and high hardness. You did not use any RO water at all? Whats your water hardness?
Thanks for this Joey. This was a much-needed video. Other videos just show the discus going vertical and that's it, no explanations or anything like parameters and such. I'm so glad you did this video.
Finally some youtube that explains my FAVORITE aquarium fish. I just loooove them. I went through the hard way, i bought filters for my tap water that made the water into what the discus prefered, it drove my head in but then i realized that the water in the aquarium shop didn't even meet their "needs" as explained by the store owner. :) I'm buying my own house and i will definatley make a discus fishroom :D
Tone Andersen hii
i love the ideal vs consistency explanation
Joey i hope that you can read this that you really inspired me well not just me but others too and i really watch every video you make about discus so that i will have knowledge in owning a discus and now i plan to buy only 2 Proven pairs of discus. That's all thank you for the knowledge and for inspiring me for the best God bless you!!!
I like this guy, he's real, smart and thorough.
Fabulous video although "Perimeter and Parameter" sounds so similar in your speech ;)
+Ken Lam That's your O-pinion lol
Ken Lam The guy threw me for a curve! There is a world of difference between parameter and perimeter!
I think he is actually accidentally saying perimeter instead of parameter....
Well done!!! Great to see that you were successful without using RO water or constantly hatching brine shrimp!! Those have been the two main factors keeping me from breeding discus.
Straight up the best channel on youtube hands down , I wish I had time or skills to do some of the diy idea's.
lets discus this later

I love the part talking about consistency and ideal. The first six months I kept fish, I chased after the perfect PH (7.0) and somehow always managed to get it very high or very low instead. Now, I leave it be unless it gets lower than 6.8 or higher than 7.4. Unfortunately, about 8 months out of the year where I live the PH is far too high. I measured it one time during the winter and it was 8.8! For several weeks last year, I had lethargic fish who were acting very off and I couldn't figure out why for the longest time. Then I tested the PH and found out that it was 8.6 and realized. I had a trio of swordtails, several guppies, two angelfish, and two catfish and a pleco.
Im new in breeding discus ... i ve a pair in my home aquarium ... thanks so much for sharing these infos... i did realy learn different tips of that ...
“Its mainly just a game of patience” *VIDEO BUFFERS*
A light-colored painted background and bottom definitely helps the discus feel calmer, which helps them breed more easily. If illuminated, it also reflects some of the light and helps the fish's color pop!
I got some discus, I was always told they are hard fish to keep, which they are not. For about 4 weeks my discus were breathing very quickly 1st time I noticed I tested the water and I had ammonia spike because the pleco in my tank was creating a lot of waste so 3 days in a row I did 40/50 % water change and removed the pleco into my big tank and also bought a better filter. For the following 3 weeks they were still breathing rapidly but water parameters were perfect, after some further research I found that if my temperature was to high it could cause them to breath quickly so I dropped the temp down from 30 to 26 degrees. Problem solved they have now been happy for a few months, these are some of my favourite fish super inquisitive.
Great... I like this fish very much...living in Thailand, it should be easy to keep! Temperature is no issue!
Very interesting Video. I have 80 3 month old discus at this Moment and ist so much fun to see them grow.
I really liked the video, I’m always happy when you use visuals like pictures or clips
Finaly the video I've been waiting for.
Thanks Joey.
One question: Are you against feeding the fry baby brine shrimp or was it just a matter of convenience since you made your own food and didn't want to go through the trouble of hatching brine shrimp every day?
Thanks a million 🙏🏼 for your video. Really appreciate it!
About time :-) Excellent video learnt a hell of a lot. just need to convince the wife I need a new tank now.
Hey Joey , I have heard a lot about this channel and tonight is my first time of watching. Enjoying the style but and passion but I am really struggling with the repeated use of the word perimeter when talking about water quality PARAMA=ETERS. We are talking high end fish here and an expected level of expertise to keep them going so lets use the terminology/jargon that goes with this great hobby.
great video, really appreciate it, had to watch it with 2x speed though
I'm just watching this to see BABY FISHES
DAVID MINCHALA I already know that... a Great job on going videos leaving retarded comments to strangers.. good lord...
DAVID MINCHALA Fishes is a word. You should be staying in school, mister smarty pants. And, you can call them baby fish too.
@@gmardog saying baby fish is like saying fry humans
@DAVID MINCHALA lol
@DAVID MINCHALA saying "I'm just watching this to see FRY" Just doesn't sound funny
I had to pause!!! BHAHAHAHAHAHA.... lord have mercy. When those two babies got pushed up the side @ 27:18 i cracked up so loud i woke everyone up.
Sein Maestro lol thought the same thing 😂
You connect several tanks (couples + fry tanks) to the sump, aren't you afraid that if one tank will get sick they all will? Just wondering, very helpfull video tho!
Hi love your video’s. Could you please do a video on that tank setup you showed on here. Breeding setup with all tanks connected so all their water is the same like yours please. Thank you for your vids
Fortunately, I have a pair in my community tank. Last night they laid eggs in front of my eyes and ate them all. I am so excited and surprised.
I recommend the blue light for nights, I use almond leaves/ bark/ and cones along with drift wood to keep ph lower with tannins. Plus its good food for plecos
What if i divide a 50 gal into 2 25 gal to house 2 breeding pair and i divide the aeration and weaken it further using regulators would it be ok?
As long as the pairs can not see each other, it should be fine.
Love your videos their so helpful!
about to get my lunch ready and its time to enjoy this video! thanks joey
Brilliant video, could you please advise on how you deal with chlorine in the tap water?
GREAT video Joey, thanks for all your work with these Video's man
Great info. Lots of common sense. Thanks
can you make a video on how to choose driftwood(or any kind of wood ) like you did with the rocks?
Another really fantastic video. Really educational and informative. Thank you from your South African fan.
Most detailed and best discus breeding video
Hi thank from Vietnam, great tip but i have some question about your system. Since it a close system the chance of exposing all fish to same disease or fungi is high. In the span of your hobby do your experience it ? if yes how do you combat it. To provide content, i have acquaintance into breeding and keeping but struggled fungi and other disease in discuss to the he have to use all the antibiotic and quarantine fish all the time.
Dude you are amazing...You are one of those guys that knows how to do everything...big fan... not a weirdo ha ha ha
Hey Buddy.... I have been watching your videos and DIY tutorials for quite some time now and really really appreciate it... I had a query on breeding Arowanas as in how to breed them in aquariums.. the required water conditions, substrate, feeding frequency and all.... Looking forward to your inputs and views. Thanks
Very sound advise!
So long ago but still a good video to watch!
I just love this channel ! 🎉 👏🏻
About Time!! LOL glad to see it!! Just wanted to be first to comment now I have to go watch it!! Thumbs Up!!
Discuses have no particular environment other than the tank itself. Where they are located is adaptable to your situation. Discus can adapt to almost any environment as long as that environment has consistent elements of traffic, noise and your interaction with your fish. Maintenance, Water changes and feeding are all important activities that build trust. If you are netting your fish and scaring them more than necessary, each time you approach the tank your fish will be suspect about why. If you make the experience a good one you build trust. Plan long term for your fish so that they can continue throughout their life cycle to experience the same environment and not disrupt their life experiences and patterns. This is True with all Tropical fish but some more than others. Discus fish are in that category where great care in planning a safe and stable environment yields the best results. They are not that fragile, they just need your trust. Good Luck!
Hey am a huge fan of your UA-cam blog I watch almost all your videos I love your work and I love your fish tanks. I would love to know if you still have any discus am so interested
You're videos are awesome! Canadians are so kool! Haha 😏
this video was great. keep doing things like this please
Lets discuss about how to breed discus.. If you dont want to discuss today.. We can discuss later... 🤣
Thank you so much for the table of contents in the description oh my god. Literally so helpful
how much do the discus fry sell for?
Can a pair form naturally in a community tank with other breeds before being moved to their seperate tank? Or should they be raised in a Discus-only tank in the first place?
Background image photo frame arowana tank best looking tank ever!
I'm so surprised and confused. I got a few juvenile discus around 3 months ago. 6 in total. All doing very well, a couple of them are around 10cm now. I've just looked in the tank and two of them are caring for eggs they have laid on a leaf! Firstly, how on earth has this happened seeing as they arent even a year old? And secondly... what the hell should I do?? Will they do this again? Haha I always thought they were quite challenging to breed in a planted tank, which is what I have... especially this quickly.
I kinda want to know what's happened?
Dan Wiles yeah what happened. did they live
Dan Wiles What happened Dan? :o
Yeah what happened
What happened
Thanks.
Another question, how much does it cost to feed, maintenance and recoures for 1 koppel discus fish for 1 year
Depends on the appetite of the fish
Parameters!!!!
correct perimeters is the edges of an area I.E. land
Hi Joey, Am about to start trying to breed discus. So when you bred discus you did so in hard, high-ph water? Not just for keeping fish? Thanks for your videos!
Simon
I've bred angels before going to try discus next...building a 180 right now to get the ball rolling
I need to start getting more discus, im in london just started discus hobby, and im in love with them. From where i can get good size tank so i breed them and keep them happy? What filter do i need and how do i can connect all tanks with one filter?
So, i am getting a 300litre(80g) i will get 6 discus and some...... or a bunch of killis
So you let them eat the slime coat until they transition to the home made food? There is no intermediary?
ive bread African cichlids and shrimp and south american fish with the same water so i agree with consistency
You are Amazing , you new fan from Iraq 🇮🇶

Hi Joey,
Very informative video on breeding discus.
I am planning of using aquaponics to breed discus. Just wanted to get your expert opinion if this is appropriate.
One of the main reasons is from what I understand, a aquaponics system if set up correctly requires almost no maintenance (such as washing a filter in a standard canister filter).
Do you have a video on how to setup an aquaponics system for a 3 ft tank (which you recommended for breeding discus)?
Thanks!
in the old update I would've been part of the +301 club.... I miss that club
The king of diy I have a question can you use lighting for cold water fish such as gold fish?
Your dead set right consistency is key to all types of fish
Those fish are so beautiful!
what did you do with your culled/culling discus? food for something?
do two different colour discuss pair together and breed? Silly question but will appreciate your response. Cheers!
John Martin ya
Yes, I actually have an “intercolor” pair myself
Yu kinda remind me of the guy on da movie SPLIT...... but besides dat great job bro ur videos are really good n I always learn so much from u I subscribed to ur videos and used so much of your knowledge keep the videos goin 👍
You mentioned it was very important to make frequent water changed to keep you nitrates low what if your nitrates are really hi right out of the tap
Hello did you use any water softener? What about fungus did you ad anything in to the water? Also if they have eggs do I have to water exchange?
CAN WALLPAPER CAN BE USED INSTEAD OF PAINT
+The king of DIY
Joey, how much do discus cost? Im interested in building a large tank, and I would like to see if these are within my price range. Do you know how much a discus would cost from either you or another seller?
u said the best way to get the pairs is buy 6-8 juvenile and then raising them up, did the raising progress also in bare tank?
+rizki akbar yes, bare tanks help tremendously with growing them out.
The king of DIY is it ok to but plants in there or not
I grew out my discus in a community tank. After a year i got 2 pairs but other fish eat all the eggs
my discus pair keeps laying eggs and get them right the first time, giving me many batches of successful babies. However, after several months of doing so the mum starts eating the eggs and then finally they completely stopped breeding. It has been already like this for about half a year. What should I do? Changes? Thanks :)
ahhian she needs a break. She may be just done at this point.
I just realized that her breeding tube is permanently prolapsed, which doesn't seem normal to me. Any idea what happened?
take the eggs before they can eaten and give to another fish
I am Starting with Discus again. I have three in a 65 tall. I currently have a 220 with a sump, running salt. I am thinking about changing it over to fresh so I can hold more discus. Can I keep the sand and live rock.
i dont even know what a discus is lol. What camara did you use to make the video?. Vid quality is awsum.
Thnak you Joey,
LOVE YOUR WALL!!!!
Not going to be able to run a sump for one pair. I thought of using a sponge filter but I've been told to use a diatom filter, thoughts?
Got your book in today thank you very much very good package
hi!, i have a question about discus fry. which ppm results better to growing up better?, my tub water have 60TDS but i want to try with 200TDS 'cause i read about wich more minerals on water they can absorve and grown better. can you give me your opinion based on your own experience? Thanks a lot
Damn I’ve learn more from this than I did in 4 years of high school. 🐠
I've been waiting for this!!!! Thanks!!!
discus are the best!
Just get 29. Or 40 breeder tank. Here in the usa 33 gallon tank long is not common
Hi Joey,
Can you make a DIY auto feeder?
Can you do another video like how to raise other food for fish like daphnia
Thank you very much🤩😊
Can eggs survive at 70ppm? I can't get the tds lower than 70ppm
