    Latinx isn’t inherently a bad term, but just not the one many in our community chooses to use nowadays because it’s not as easy to pronounce in Spanish. Many opt-in to use Latine instead. However, it was not created by white people like many people believe but rather was created by the Spanish-speaking queer community possibly during protests! And remember y’all, Spanish is the language of the colonizers of our indigenous ancestors! So I have no issue with the term Latinx even though I use Latine.

    14:50 queer latina here! this is a pretty complicated topic with a lot of nuance so i’ll try my best to explain gender neutral spanish (we call this lenguaje inclusivo, meaning inclusive language)
    in spanish (both latin spanish and spanish spanish) when you refer to a mixed group you use the masculine form of the word, but because of the context it’s considered gender neutral. for example, “los chicos” can mean both “the boys” and “the kids”, depending on context, but “las chicas” only means “the girls”.
    There is a push for the usage of gender neutral words, which are pretty new and not accepted by everyone. the way this works is by adding an -e instead of -o (m) or -a (f) at the end of gendered words. so for example “él es lindo” (he is pretty), “ella es linda” (she is pretty) and now “elle es linde” (they are pretty).
    with this movement there also started being a push to use gender neutral language when referring to a group. this was also a way to bring attention to the fact that, historically, the reason why masculine is considered neutral is because of misogyny and men being considered the norm (same reason why in english womenkind, for example, is understood to mean only the female population but mankind and humankind are used interchangeably a lot of the time. at many points in history they only ones considered people were white men so there was no need to distinguish those two words).
    the way this works is by adding -e like before *or* -x. it’s important to add that the -x is only used when writing, it’s supposed to be a place holder for the person reading it.
    For example, you might write down an announcement that says the word todxs, which can be read as todos (m), todas (f) or todes (neutral). we don’t pronounce the x.
    i’ll continue with the reactions to inclusive language in the replies to this comment to not make this supper long

    • @kikilatorre
      @kikilatorre 2 роки тому +12

      This is all very new, i’m from argentina and here this conversation really took off in 2019, i remember radios and news channels making fun of inclusive language and mocking those who used it publicly. it’s a bit better now, but not a lot. here in argentina it was recently banned from schools.
      there is an institution called the rae, real academia española (royal spanish academy) which is pretty much what it sounds like, an old institution in spain that many consider the authority on the entire spanish language, even in latin america. they don’t like that people are adding things to language and making it inclusive. since many people who are against inclusive language use them a a crutch for they hate the use of the -e and gender neutrality is not only about non binary people or attempting to fighting/point a finger misogyny, but also colonisation and imperialism.
      there is a lot more to this but i’ll leave it here, i already know no one is going to read all of it

    • @kikilatorre
      @kikilatorre 2 роки тому +11

      for the word latinx itself i have no insight on its history or cultural conversation, as i’ve only seen it used by people who live in the us. i’ve lived in argentina all my life, i’ve never met anyone in real life who was also from latin america who used that word the way latines in the us do.
      also the idea that white and latino are intrinsically different things is very much a concept from the usa. white people make up a little less than half of latin american population and in certain countries like argentina its like 70/80%, it’s like saying white people and people with dark hair are different things or when some of you guys say italians aren’t white

    As a Brazilian, all nouns and adjectives are gendered in Portuguese, so there's no neutral version of latino/latina. However, some people have started using a third gender and saying latine, in order to be more inclusive of nbs and women and not use male-centered language. The same goes for Spanish.
    Some people write stuff like latinx or latin* , but no one actually talks like that because it's unpronounceable. People have also raised the issue of screen readers and accessibility for blind people.
    I, personally, prefer saying latin in English, since it's a word that already exists and is gender neutral. I think latine is fine too, but it's "made up" (all language is made up, but this third gender is not consensus yet) and I think it can alienate older people who might not be so aware of LGBTQ issues (I'm sure most of my relatives don't know what nonbinary means).
    Either way, I don't think it's that bad to use latino either way. Inclusive language is important, but actually fighting for nbs' and women's rights is definitely a much bigger priority. I'd much rather have someone who's by my side and says latino than some congressperson who says latinx but doesn't do anything for advancing the rights of marginalized people.

    Latinx is unnecessary and hard to pronounce like it annoys me so much just use “latine” like what was the need of an x it isn’t a vocal, we have “ o “ that is a vocal usually used for masculine terms like = Latino, we have “ a “ that is a vocal usually used for feminine terms like = Latina, and you can just use “ e “ as a neutral one = latine, I just can’t describe how much I despite latinx it breaks our gramatical rules in a way that doesn’t make sense, “e” is the one that makes more sense,
    In conclusion: latino is perfectly fine but if you want a fully neutral one use latine not latinx

The more you include specific people, the less inclusive the flag becomes, and that’s alright, we can have specific flags for specific movements inside the LGBT, but we do not need the progress chevron or the progress bars on the main flag, because they’re ugly and somewhat exclusive

    At the high profile company I work for (starts with T) the Employee Resource Group is pretty DYI so most of our pride march is designed by someone in the group, which is why ours usually doesn't suck. Funny story related to this, whoever ordered the Trans stickers was from purchasing or production or something and they usually ordered stickers for safety that come in these huge 1000 rolls, so someone ordered trans stickers and we had them at every ERG meeting forever and EVERYONE had trans stickers for the longest time. Also Cisco makes servers.

    26:03: gap was founded in 1969. they’ve had “gap 1969” shirts for years because it’s the year it was founded. i see where it’s a pride shirt that it could be misconstrued, but the reason it has 1969 is because it’s the year it was founded, and it’s keeping consistent with a lot of their previous designs, not necessarily trying to “insert themselves”, at least from my point of view. but i am not a part of the lgbtq+ community, so it’s not my place to decide that, just wanted to point out the reason they had 1969. if i’ve overstepped, please tell me!

    first of all your videos are so so good and i admire the way you try your best to bring awareness to different issues while including everyone! i wanted to talk about the latinx thing though! using latinos, while historically considered gender neutral, would be like using "guys" as gender neutral. and since everything in spanish is gendered, we've been trying to introduce different forms of inclusive language, and that includes anything that replaces the gendered vowel in a word. ie latine, latinx and latin@ are valid, but since latinx or latin@ can be hard to read or pronounce, some prefer to use the e as gender neutral. and from what i understand, the term latinx was coined by latin people living in USA. latines FROM latam don't really identify as latine, we identify as the country we're from (ie i'm argentinian).
    do correct me if i got anything wrong, but please let's not start a debate. have a great day!
    ps: something incredibly ironic is that even nonbinary in spanish is gendered
