This is one of the most important songs in my life. You see, once upon a time, I was sent to war. The wonderful girl that I was dating back then wrote me beautiful perfumed letters every single day. She’d sometimes apologise for not having anything interesting to say, but just the normality of her stories and the deep love she sent me got me through a world of pain I was in far from her and which I couldn’t believe was happening around me.
I came back damaged and riddled with survivor’s guilt. She seemed to interpret it as not being worthy or good enough for me, but she was more than I could ever have dreamt of, and the reason I seemed uncomfortable was because I was traumatised and couldn’t tell her everything that I’d been through for reasons of secrecy.
Somehow we broke up over an Italian meal. It was all my fault and I’ve never got over it.
That was in 1988. Both our lives went on. Then one day, I heard this song and the lines about ‘the tracer glides in its graceful arc’, and ‘the bullets whispering’, and his calling out to his woman back home and to the repo man and the normality of what she’s facing back home, and I just exploded into deep sobbing tears.
I hadn’t listened to the song for a while, and was just back in touch with her again, all these years later. We’ve both had a rough journey since we were together, and it’s a friendship and a sense of deep caring now, but it brought me back to listening to this song again, and I broke down again.
The lyrics take me back to the war I was in and the sense I had of calling out to her then. I suppose love never dies and I still love who she is and who she was to me in my time of need. She was just being kind and devoted, it’s what she does, but it saved my life and she’s still no idea how.
I’ve an eclectic taste in music, but David wrote a song here that will remind me, move me and live with me forever. Thanks, David.

I'm 62 and loved one woman forever. I can even remember her in a past life a thousand years ago. She even has the same name as she did in Persia. It's really bazaar and when we met I spun around and so did she. She knew we had known each other before. She even comes from the same city in Persia as the other one who had a famous poem and song written about her. She is hard work but worth it
