Autism and Routines (she hates it)

  • Autism and routines typically go hand in hand. What I forgot until recording this very vlog is that Abbie likes her routines...HER routines. She doesn't want them imposed on her. Fortunately she's gotten better and better at it and it will become second nature soon. Until then it's going to be a hard road.

Instead of playing banana and spotting yellow cars look for motorcycles. That teaches teens/young drivers to be aware of them and to find them in blind spots so there are fewer wrecks.

@@dunpeal1923 true but every driver benefits from paying attention to motorcycles and blind spots. Switching from yellow cars to motorcycles does that for drivers of all ages. And if Isaiah goes to App State he will need to be very aware of motorcycles on the parkway and country roads (speaking as someone who graduated from App).

Asa, you guys are killing it. As a worker with a wide range of students, I applaud you guys. Abbie is a smart, teachable young lady and many of the "attitude" behaviors are completely within her ability to control. Some parents of special needs kids will not hold them to a behavioral standard with rules due to their disability, tolerating behaviors the child completely controls at school or in other settings. ALL kids (we all did to) will seek to manipulate their parents to get their way no matter who they are, on or off the spectrum. You guys are holding Ab accountable and enforcing rules. This is critical to Abbie achieving independence and integration into more social groups and hopefully into the world of work one day. I pray other parents follow your lead! Love you guys! (Idea---maybe consider doing a video on how you and Priscilla discern between Abbie legitimately struggling with sensory issues VS Abbie just resisting an undesired activity because she wants to go eat snack and listen to music.) I have seen you call it out during videos before, "this is teen attitude" or "this is sensory overload." Big hugs to all the Maass Squad!

Interesting: the change in sleeping arrangements (new house, new room) and the removal of a restriction (the closed/locked door) resulted in the extinguishment of a negative behavior (tearing pullups and smearing pewp) because she has found a more appropriate way to ask when she wakes up. We've struggled with that behavior for years and recently our son has started wanting to keep his door open at night and has shown that he recognizes when and how to use the bathroom appropriately. Maybe we should revisit the half door idea.

You might like the Stur brand water drops - they are naturally colored and sweetened. Most stores have them now and they are yummy.

I have been watching your videos for a long time, and they make such an impact for me. Question: Why does Abbie take her shoes off in the car?
My husband’s brother has autism, and your videos are so helpful for me to understand what he grew up with as a neurotypical sibling. He is the youngest as well, so he has a unique relationship of having to be the oldest brother despite being eight years younger.

If we see a yellow car, you have to be the first one to start (lightly) hitting the other person and say chiquita over and over until they say banana lol. My teen tends to forget the lightly part 🤣

Another game we play in the car is that we look at signs whether it is road, street, shop etc and go through the alphabet. We see how far we can get after each car journey ❤️❤️

We don't play Banana or we'd all lose because I live in Pennsylvania and you don't see many yellow cars lol but we do play the alphabet game A-Z. It never gets old, our 2 teenagers are 16 but even when we don't have them hubby & I play. We also play punch buggy 😆 BTW, the teacher that buckles and unbuckles Abby from school looks like she is so much fun, nice, and can tell she has a beautiful heart! ❤

Does Abby squint when lights are bothering her or when she is tired?? Or neither? I noticed it when she got home from school and was curious :)

Braylee Wee was told to take off her boots 👢 when she was headed up the stairs from outside, she did, without looking back just quickly flipped them off quicker than a whistle (it was smooth and funny), though she had to correct it by picking them up and putting them away....it was cute

We played the alphabet game. Mom would see something, tree for example. I then had to find something that started with E. Take the last letter of the pervious word. Except I’m dyslexic so it was mostly just extra work for mom 😂
