    The reason I really appreciate Randy's equipment advice is that he endorses items that he is'nt sponsored by.

    • @Fresh_Tracks

      Yes, lots of items I have no relationship with are in my pack. And most items I use for sponsorship I was buying with my own money, at full retail, long before I stated these platforms. Thanks for watching.

    In the Marine Corps we lived by the motto "Breeze and Freeze" long humps made us shed every single thing that wasn't absolutely necessary. For a tent I preferred nothing but a gortex sleeping bag cover. Good for rain, snow, mud, sand, you name it. Some really shitty nights sleep. Good times regardless!

    7:04..... Great to hear! I had a couple guys haggling me, telling me how "new" I was to hunting because I had an empty chamber unless I was getting ready to fire. Like being "new" to hunting, and not trusting my mechanical safety was a bad thing. Makes me think everyone, regardless of age, should take hunters education. Not that it would change much with guys like them.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 років тому +2

      Glad you stick to your own ideas. There is no situation worth the risk of a problem such as an accidental discharge of a firearm.

    • @natas0733
      @natas0733 7 років тому +2

      Jake Martineau a lot of people seem to confuse hunting practices with self defense practices when it comes to this topic. When hunting i rarely carry with a loaded chamber. Exception is when hunting ground dwelling upland bird like quail or pheasant. Kinda hard not to then.

    • @jeffreyjsmith1980
      @jeffreyjsmith1980 7 років тому +1

      My uncle taught me the same thing. I don't have a round chambered when I am hiking around either. Always keep a mind towards safety when in the field.

    Thanks Randy, I just ordered my Kifaru Universal Gun Bearer $46 shipped. The Universal one attaches the butt stock carrier to the waist belt with velcro (not MOLLE) so it can be used with packs other than Kifaru's. I carry a very large, heavy barreled rifle and I haven't found a sling that I can stand yet. I hunt the Northwest also. Some of the same places as you. I think this is going to be my ticked. Thanks again.

    TENT-> Tarptent Moment DW solo tent with 2 doors and 2 vestibules. Plenty for me.
    CAMERA-> Olympus TG4. Does everything I want including videos with sound.
    COOKING-> I carry a DIY fleece "cozy" to slip my quart freezer bag of hot freeze-dried food o keep it hot for 10 to 15 minutes.
    TP-> These days of the pandemic "Mountain Money" is now called "ButtCoin". ;o)
    My mountain rifle is a 6.5 PRC Browning X-Bolt Pro (6 lbs. 3 oz.) and Bushnell LRTS 4.5 - 18 x 44 scope W/illuminated G3 reticle.
    SHOOTING STICKS->I use hiking poles with Quick stiX discs below the handles to instantly make them into a solid, adjustable bipod.

      Kirkland Signature wipes from Costco. I keep whatever I need in a sealed Ziploc bag. Besides doing the typical paperwork they will take stains out of clothing like magic, I keep them in my briefcase in case a business lunch turns messy. If they dry out just add some water, they still work!

    Randy, I use frame packs to pack out my harvest almost 80% of the time, I tend to over think & try different methods or organization of managing the load. sometimes it works & sometimes it doesn't. It can be frustrating to have to stop periodically to readjust reload, or reorganize the load. after viewing your Alaska blacktail hunt & observing your loaded trek down the mountain I would appreciate a video of your secure loading method.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 років тому

      I use the Mystery Ranch packs. They have a bag attached to the frame that allows everything to be organized. Lots of compression straps, so the load stays stable and secure. We are in the middle of a video about those packs and how we use them. They are the best packs I have ever found.

    Randy, love the videos! Wanting to get the item that attaches to the pack and carries the gun. What is it called or what is the manufacture?
    Also, in one of your videos, you talk about the various seasons of the bull elk... early, late, rut, etc etc etc. Could you make a video that talks a little more about each of those time frames, and typically what we can expect to see or watch for. Being new at this, I'm hoping to figure out more of the characteristics of the elk during each of those periods so I can hone in on them more. For example, are the elk up higher in the pine and quakers, or down lower in the junipers in the early or rut or late season. Hope that makes sense. oH.. I"m in Utah.
    Thanks again for all the work you do. Ever need a camera guy or editor LMK.

    First time I have been to your site and found it useful but I have a question about overnight gear.
    Are ALL of your hunts based on CERTAIN ability to return to your camp or vehicle but do you not see the value of carrying a minimum of gear to ensure that you can survive an unexpected overnight stay in the field should you take a tumble and cannot hike out to camp or truck or if a nasty storm were to roll in unexpectedly?
    Personally, I don't care HOW fastidious I am in checking the weather reports prior to a hunt or if I'll be covering a lot of ground during a hunt, but I've been caught out in a storm or two that I couldn't see due to tall hills or mountains and I'm STUCK in place for at least a few hours.
    Sure, your helpers or other hunters "might" be hauling a tarp or such, but if out alone, if you don't have it, you cannot create it out of thin air.
    So as a minimum, I carry a quality poncho I can hunker down inside of alongside a small fire under some trees and not be at the mercy of some bad storm event.
    It just makes sense to carry a bit of extra weight and bulk to ensure I am not overly inconvenienced or facing a storm where I can't get at least a little out of the worst conditions. Call me paranoid but IF it is going to happen it seems to ALWAYS happen to ME.
    A quick example: my Dad and I were out bear hunting and a rainstorm came out of nowhere.
    As I had a quality rubberized Military style poncho, we were able to snuggle together under a broad pine tree, gather some small tinder and build a small fire over which we were able to heat some water, add some instant coffee and wait out the storm while munching on some trail mix and sharing a large canteen cup of hot coffee.
    Talk about a Bonding moment for Dad and I.
    As much as a PITA as that experience was, Dad and I were SO happy we were able to stay (mostly) dry and warm and nibble on some snacks and coffee until the storm passed (about 2 hours).
    While Dad has been gone almost 12 years now, even though that situation was nasty, we survived, solved all the problems of the world and shared some time that will stay with me FOREVER, or st least until I join Pop in that Great Hunting Camp in The Sky one day in the far-off future.
    In closing, thank you for your site and I look forward to watching many more of your video's.
    I get to live and hunt vicariously through your hunting exploits.
    Take Care and God Bless.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 років тому +1

      In my pack is everything I would need in the event of an overnight requirement due to emergency. Extra layer or two of clothes, fire starter, emergency shelter space blanket, water, water sterilization drops, first aid kit, etc. It weighs a few extra pounds to carry, but is worth the comfort of knowing I am prepared for most any emergency.
      Glad you found us and thanks for watching.

So I got 4 things from this , you don't trust your rifle to preform up to standard, with the safety on a rifle should never fire and should be as safe as me holding a round in my hand. 2. the safety system of a howa is in a bad spot and may click off by it self and that's the reason you don't put a round in the chamber, I mean by its self like bumping or hitting it on things. Or 3. you point your rifle in bad directions that could possibly put the people around you in danger!! Or finally number 4 you feel the need to be a responsible gun owner and you believe in murphy's law if it can go wrong it will!! Everyone as far as I am aware of has walked away from your hunting show alive and that is an awesome testament to proper gun use and figure out one step that could eliminate any variable that could possibly get any hurt by one simple step , don't put a round in the chamber until your gunna fire that weapon.
    Now I hunt alone a lot and I put a round in the chamber the second I leave the truck . my ruger m77 has a three position safety where its kind of hard to get it off safety when its in the third position which locks the bolt and the safety is on. I trust my rifle when I alone . Well heres an example you can drive like the biggest idiot in the world speeding doing crazy stuff.. what ever your alone doing this . Now pretend your vehicle has you family riding alone with you . You are responsible for there life's and I bet your going to error on the side of caution. That is the same way you should friends and family in the woods. And while in the woods yeah definitely don't for get the tp!!
