CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After the liquor bomb fails to detonate, Tresckow (Kenneth Branagh) must retrieve the evidence from Colonel Brandt (Tom Hollander).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the absolute height of World War II, German generals hatch a daring plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler and effectively render the German war machine impotent. Directed by Bryan Singer, Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the real-life mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Project Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his government from the inside. Stauffenberg has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, but after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reaches a breaking point. The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. He joins the resistance movement -- a treasonous act, punishable by death -- and risks his life and the life of his family for the chance to change history. Comprised of high-ranking officials working in secret, the German Resistance has access to the inner workings of the government and military, putting them in the perfect position to dispatch the dictator and then use his own official contingency plan to seize power -

Historical Background.
The Bomb that was put on Hitler's plane firing mechanism did work. It just happened that the bomb was kept in the cold underbelly of the plane with the luggage. If it was in the heated cabinet, than it would have been completely different.
33kaus holokaust the whole bomb was English made, and they had to use English made bombs because their fuses didn’t make noise. If they used a German made bomb the guy who handled the liquor bottle would hear it hissing.

IRL, Tresckow sent Fabian von Schlabrendorff to get the bomb, and Brandt wasn't the least bit suspicious; Tresckow had called him earlier, inquired casually if the package had been delivered, and when Brandt said no, he told the colonel to hold it--it was the wrong kind of brandy--and Schlabrendorff swapped it for some other bottles. Schlabrendorff later said that Brandt gave the package a jerk, and it took everything he had not to flinch.
Had Olbricht followed Treschkow to meet Brandt, that might be like :
Olbricht: Lord Beckett??
Brandt: Davy Jones?? What are you doing here?? LoL
(Dr Carl Goerdeler enters Brandt's office)
Brandt: if it isn't Sparrow's first mate, Gibbs
Goerdeler: Cutler Beckett?
Olbricht (in Davy Jones's voice): What the f'ck are you two doing in my movie?
Brandt (in full Lord Beckett mode): Thwarting your's, Mercer's and Gibbs' attempts to assassinate the great Adolf Hitler. Thats what!
And then Billy Mack comes in singing
Oh, and don't forget Mr. Mercer (David Schofield).

His higher rank what saved
Excellent observation. A lower ranked officer would have little choice but to acquiesce to the Colonel's suggestion of opening the bottle. Being a general, he could play it off as him reminding a subordinate to stay sober on duty.
The colonel sitting behind the desk was killed in the july 20th blast. He was promoted posthumously to brigadier general.

@@bernardmontemor ah yes, I saw it. He unknowingly moved the bomb away from Hitler, but put it directly under him.
I would have crumbled and been like “is that…a bomb! Who put that there?!”
Hitler survived so many close calls with assassinations it's astounding. Part of it was just genuine luck (Like with this bomb and the July 20th attempt), but it was also due to a tendency of Hitler to rush through his schedule and leave places early or cancel them at the last minute for any number of reasons.
I imagine having so many assassinations attempts made on you would make you paranoid like that.

Is it bad that I think that Wehrmacht uniforms are cool?
I think that it is the general consensus. They wore the best. The allies got to wear cheap garbage.
There is a looong list of British and American actors who put on a German uniform, and yes, they look smashing in them.
lee yi xian yeah, like the shitty 5 shot kar 98
lee yi xian the British had the 10 shot lee Enfield, the Americans the 8 shot semi auto garand. The Italians were better equipped, with a. 6 shot rifle.
lee yi xian the Allies had 10 shot action rifles, sub machine guns, semi auto rifles, and lmgs, they didn’t really need to use machine guns on a large scale.
After he helped save the British at Dunkirk, Kenneth Branagh had....other priorities to attend to
He's a double agent.
idk but the instant Brandt says ‘Now...’. and practically slams the box on the desk, and saw the General flinch in fear, I always bust out laughing at that. Plus, the way Brandt says, “Well you’ve come a long way, you must be.....thirsty?” Something about the way he says thirsty just makes me laugh hysterically for some reason. lol. Just an unintentionally funny scene to me. 😂😂😂
I’m not surprised you found his delivery so funny. The guy who plays Brandt (forgotten his name) is also a decent actor in comic roles. Check out his performance as a British politician in the film “In The Loop”.
And you forget that Lieutenant-Colonel Brandt knows about the bomb. It gets obvious during the conversation and he had been on that plane, too! 😉 Greetings from Germany.
@@knutritter461 exactly my thoughts... Goes to show that many more people either knew or were involved in plotting against Hitler...

You must be pretty lucky in life to have a wife and have the time to play golf lol, i wouldnt complain
I don’t understand why Brandt didn’t open the box and see for himself rather than just having suspicions about it? It was in his possession he could’ve just opened it
He knew it was a bomb, I think the subtext of the scene is that he really didn't want to get involved.
I think most people commenting here have not realized that Lieutenant-Colonel Brandt knows about the bomb without being involved into the plot. And he had been in that plane, too. Greetings from Germany. 😉
EXACTLY ! But the Colonel is not sure how much the senior officer is involved when he asks should we open it and share a drink ? if the other guy had said yes then he could not have known there was a bomb inside by saying no he was confirming he new the contents ,also people miss the significance of the pistol on the desk and all the other officers ` back up` in the anti room in case they are needed
@@michaelwhittaker5432 Or it's all interpretation and he didn't know. Brandt seemed to be a loyalist so he'd have no reason to look the other way.
Tresckow was sent into the eastern front soon after
The Colonel def suspected something, but he was out ranked i guess he didnt want to push it
I hate how TV and movies do this all the time. They are having a secret conversation about why the bomb did not explode ... as they walk down a busy hallway. WTF?
screen writers today lack finesse, if not more
They never mentioned the word "bomb", and they were careful on their choice of words.
“Do they suspect us?”
“Well...We’re not speaking German, you idiot!”

That makes his casual return of the device even more ballsy... like do better next time General.

I just read all the assassination attempts made towards Hitler on wikipedia and from all of them this was the best at showing how stupidly lucky Hitler was.
There are some well-written scenes in this movie
I find it weird that he is talking to a general, his superior, like that.
We are probably meant to suspect he knows that something is up. Whether the Brandt of history did, I don't know, but I doubt it.
WHY is the speech so soft but the sound effects and the ending music SO LOUD?
I always thought that one of the reasons Branagh played Tresckow was that the previous time he wore a WWII German uniform was in Conspiracy, a 2001 HBO movie about the Wannsee Conference, where he played Heydrich.
Yes, for some reason the Germans always had the best looking military uniforms in the 20th century, even the post-war officers of the Bundeswehr.
Branagh and Colin Firth were absolutely beasts of actors in that film...

That guy just wanna have a drink, how bad could it be to open it?
Make sure you handle the Plutonium better than that.
Alternative scene: Gestapo arrests Treskow and Olbricht as soon as they enter the office.
*Roll credits!*
Gestapo wouldnt do that because he's a general. If they showed to every single person who worked in the High command building that even a general is against Hitler it would send a very bad message. Most likely they would find the right place and time. And the higher your rank who knows, maybe instead of getting shot you might get an arranged "heart attack".

Colonel brant. I took you for another sort.
he knows, he even picked up the brief case in the meeting when it fall over as to make sure the blast would be most affective
He didn't knew. In real life Brandt placed it on the other side because it was in the way of his leg. If he knew it he would have run out with it. It deadly wounded him. He died 3 days later.

Yeah staff outside room was because a general was visiting a colonel and his staff so they were uptight
they could possibly know what was really inside of the box and this way they just wanted to see his reaction. The guy could be already tailed day and night just to find out on other `` traitors `` in his group.
Should have checked Trechkow's Twitter.
Should have given the guy a compass for a trade
Okay was I the only one to whom after I saw this movie, simply went around trying to set people up to take a drink while on the job only to rebuke them when they said yes to it? Don't do that in a weld shop or construction site because they will take a couple drinks. 😆
Why are there always so many stupid people shouting out Hugo Boss made when seeing Wehrmacht heer uniforms? It is a traditional style Prussian uniform and has been existed since the Deutsches Kaiserreich, the second empire.
Besides, many companies participated in military uniform producing not just Hugo Boss in Third Reich. And even the Hugo Boss designed SS uniform is a hearsay. They produced them but not "made"(more accurately, designed).
Well every other nation had dress clothes too. Not like you necessarily wear that in battle. Marines have their dress blues which are beautiful IMO. As well as every other branch having their “dress” uniforms. Even back in WW2.

Thanks In Advance.
Col Brandt.......really.
So did Brandt know, or what?
ye he knew it. but he didnt tell because he had sympathy for them. it just shows that many were on a narrow ridge for or against the plot.
He knew, but either he had sympathy, or didn't want to risk it because the other guy was a higher rank he was a general.
Wait wut, I though it had a sexual connation about homosexuality.
He did NOT know. He would have never banged the bottle on the table if he knew there was a bomb hidden inside. That could have set it off.
