I gave up my R13 for a Yamaha YCL-CX. Better tuning and sound. Then my CX became backup to my Backun Q. The R13 does sound better than the Alpha but that is to be expected. Though of the many synthetic horns the Alpha is possibly the best.
I agree with you from the videos I have seen. I have not personally played a beta but I prefer the brighter sound of the R13 in comparison with Backun clarinets. In perspectives, I prefer Nicolas Baldeyrou’s tone in comparison with Corrado Guifreddi. For me the R13 is the winner in terms of tone and feel(resonance). The Alpha is very capable and reliable instrument specially to a student clarinetist like myself.
… how would the synthetic clarinet he played sound or feel better? There is $2,000 difference in price for a reason. I like the R13 from what I just heard. Maybe that is because it sounds like my R13.
For those who cannot afford to purchase an R13 or Q series clarinet. Backun Alpha is a solid choice specially for beginners and intermediate clarinetist. It feels and sounds great for a beginner clarinet. Weather is also a big factor because wood clarinets tend to crack in varying weather conditions.
Hi … thanks. Do you think your barrel cracked from cold or hot weather? Or something else. I have an R13 and my truck goes down to 30% humidity from 70%. It gets very hot in there. I always walk with my clarinet, wherever I go, these days. Also, have you thought about your Bachun barrel or bell on the R13?
From cold weather then blowing hot air or sudden change in humidity. From what I have learned in playing a wood clarinet, it should be played in increments until the wood warms up then it can played for longer duration. I’ve swap the barrel and bell vise versa and they sound awful specially the bell. It mess up the intonation. The R13 itself is already great out of the box unlike the Backun.

You should try a thicker Reed
The Backun Beta will beat an R13 with the right barrels and bell combinations. It would be worth the same price as the R13.

An R13 (professional) against a Backun Alpha (composite/student version) - is this really a fair comparison? Why not compare the R13 to the Backun Q2?
