My fat butt only gets me 75 MPH but, happy with that. I think the Honda accessories don't appear that good. When you gotta slide something over something like grips or that little shifter sock, use a blower nozzle with the air compressor to help get it on easy. The burst of air will stretch the rubber for you as you slide.
I’ve had my 2017 XR150l for about 2 years now. Since I’ve had it I’ve replaced the rear sprocket with a CRF150 sprocket, and I’ve re jetted the carb and taken the snorkel out of the air box. Would highly recommend these upgrades, it makes a real difference
I love how people say to instead buy a used ______. This is a brand new Honda, you know what you’re getting, no one’s messed with it, includes a warranty, easy to maintain, and has amazing gas mileage.
so glad to see other people stoked on this bike, I also think its the perfect around town bike, I hope I might be able to get it as my first road legal bike
Yeah, I agree, get a USED 200-250 cc for a good starter bike. You can get them hella cheap in the winter! $1500 for a bike with like 1-2k miles on it. For your first ride, go to a LARGE grass field, I mean ACRES of nothing but smooth grass. Watch "whisky throttle" videos and don't drive your bike into your neighbors camper.
@@shadrach5681 ha, winter, i live in florida lol, and ik how to ride, ive ridden a ninja 500 before, i need to learn how to ride in traffic but in terms of bike control i got the basics
I've bought a couple $20 carbs in my day. Actually I know pretty much every Chinese carb you can buy. Here's a lil nugget of info, an easier way to get the throttle cable out of the slide than using needle nose pliers, all you do is literally grab the slide in one hand and the top cap in the other hand and push them towards each other compressing the spring and then the cable will pop out the bottom of the slide and you can kinda push the cable over with your finger so it will align in that little slot. Work smart not hard.

I got the CRF150L which are a couple hundred more than the XR, got 3500k on it been an ok little bike so far. Got like 300 km out of the first tank. There are all kinds of oversized engine parts for them out of Indonesia where they are made, a full titanium Norifumi exhaust is like $306.

Love my bike and i am looking to do the same carburator swap. Are you planning on doing a tutorial about the swap. Which original parts did you use from it?? You just gained another sub!!

Got mine a few weeks ago, 3500 OTD in Columbia SC. Same with me, first brand new vehicle I've ever purchased. Great little beginner bike, loving it so far!
@pbase36 yeah they don't mark things up to the moon, I bought a 23 Ruckus there in August of 2022 (one of the first 23s) which had a MSRP of $2899 if I remember correctly. Out the door was roughly 3300. I hated having to pay so much for a scooter, but with a suspended license at the time and due to gas prices skyrocketing that year, used ones were few and far between so I did what I had to do
Here in Philippines We upgrade The Carburetor. The only carburetor that can compatible with is the Honda TMX 155 Carburetor. If you want to buy OEM just order in the Philippines. TMX 155 and XR150 is very popular here in Philippines
I used to ride these when i lived in Brazil and when they came out in the US I bought one. Its been great for just basic stuff. I motocamp with my girlfriend and commute to work on the roads.
My tactic as a young man in the early 80s was to establish an account with a small independent bank. Save up 50% of the msrp of the bike I wanted and approach the bank for the balance on credit. I'd then offer the dealer 10% below retail in cash day of purchase... and make payments 35% over the premium to pay it down within the model year. That way depreciation didn't bite my butt if I wanted to sell it sooner than I thought I would.
Greetings from Paraguay. Here these are very popular dirtroad commuters. For that I highly recommend swapping in an 21 inch front wheel. It takes small bumps way better and that's apparently how they were designed. The South american Version is assembled with an 19 inch front for it's quicker turn in and better suited for asphalt. That's what Brazil (biggest market) wants from their city commuters.
Yea man, thanks for the info! I off-roaded it recently and it performed amazing. I’m sure it would benefit from the bigger wheels and some nice tires though!
take a hamer with a long screw driver and hit inside of the exhaust...do it then test the sound until you reach the perfect tone...trust me its worth trying
I picked up a Suzuki DR200 enduro. So light and nimble it’s perfect for city riding and goofing around on when you see a little trail around. Dirt cheap on gas too. I’ve had big bikes but this one is my favourite
Carburetors are actually 1930's technology. Germans started using fuel injection on it's fighter planes in the early 1940's to prevent them from losing fuel when the planes were climbing and diving. So yeah, the DRZ is a dinosaur.

Breaking in an engine is crucial to its lifetime, normally you would drive half RPM and half throttle for the first 1000km or 600 miles, then change the oil and gruadually increase the throttle an rpm from there . Also breakes and tyres normally need to break in about 100km )60 miles) before the get peak performance
Is that really the case with modern engines? I feel like break in was more relevant before modern machining tolerances, and precision cylinder sleeves and coatings.
the beauty of carbs is you can squeeze more power without using computers. Plus it's cheap to maintain and safe from alien 👽 EMP attack. i have concern over those drums if they really do good job stopping the bike
Ahh tennis shoe problems on motorcycle you know most pegs are like that because it is strongly recommended to where boots with some kind of low heel like cowboy boots so the rolling shifter and the small foot pegs wouldn't be a problem if you where to wear proper foot protection
i live in North Thailand in the mountains. in Pai. if you are lucky you find a stretch to go 50 here. so it's a perfect bike for my area. could have a little more torque when you go with your wife and some bags. is it OK to red-line these bikes after just 7 miles ?
The CT 125 brings some nice newer bits to the table but, I really don’t think you can beat this XR 150. The other one would be the TW 200. Best overall bang for the buck.
My new xr 150 is great. Started doing wheelies in 71, in 73, bought my first real bike, a 71 R5 350 Yamaha, wheelied all the time, got tickets, all the time. Now, got 3 vtwin cruisers, the xr,and an 06 R1. My front wheel comes up 1 ", cops are right there. Oh well, guess it's time to slow down a bit.
The Honda XR150L is currently $1,588.00 USD in Negros, Philippines, as of Oct, 2023. (Helmet, registration for 3 yrs with Insurance, included, Wow) Just bought one, been On and Off road, it's a FUN TOY..!!!
I agree 100% with you about all this high tech bikes of nowadays. Too much BS technologies, too many things to be broken and give you headaches. This is the real deal right there. Really cool 4 strokes old school Honda bike !!! Nice, reliable, simple and fun. Enjoy it bro you got yourself a great bike.
I swapped in the PZ 27 carb almost immediately, no more cold start issues. Didn't have to pull the tank, but I understand that the NA model has a different cable that has to be replaced to allow different carbs.
na buy a DR 250 350 or 650 for 2500 and thats for a Clean one they have all the power you can want they are street legal, run forever and super easy to work on
In South Africa the cheapest decent bike is Hero Eco 150 trail previously (Hero Honda) is about half XR 150 price and Hero Xpulse 200 similar price to XR 150. Made in India and only sold in Asia, Africa and South America by agreement with Honda... I am very happy with my Hero 150 TR (trail)
I have a 2006 BMW F650gs I bought off Craigslist for $3,000. I love it, but at 430lbs, it's hard for my 58 year old, cancer surviving body to off-road/ trail ride. Something like this would be great as a second bike. It would be easy to carry on my mini vans hitch carrier also. No trailer needed. Edit - I never wheelie.
Bought one a couple months ago, in Jacksonville,N.C. Great bike. Bought it from Lejeune Motorsports, in Jacksonville, by the time they padded the bill, $ 4300.00. They have the market cornered here, they charge premium for everything. Oh well.
I really really want an XR150L for Commuting and Dirt Biking. While I won't be able to use the 401, it'll be perfect for riding up the 90km/h road to my work and back, as well as hitting some trails. It'll be a perfect first Motorcycle as I yet to even have my license. It's also really light so I can haul it on the back of my small SUV or Minivan with a Motorcycle rack with no issues
those are real good engines, just be sure to check the oil level after every ride. that honda engine likes to drink a lot of it. i had a honda cg titan 150 that has the same engine as the xr 150, and she had an addiction for oil, but if you just check it, you will be okay
I am not sure actually, I think some bikes have that issue but I've never heard anyone saying that about XR's so I don't think it's much of an issue on this bike in particular
I have an 2024 Honda XR190L in Honduras. Fuel injected and slightly more powerful than the 150. Out the door $3400 in Central America. Its only rival there is the Suzuki GN125E, but the Suzuki has range restrictions, the Honda no, not on CA roads. It wouldn't make it on I95, it is about perfect for CA.
My memory is that I was quoted (in Pennsylvania) an OutTheDoor final cost of $4,300. They tacked on assembly, set-up, etc etc etc The "less than $3,000" is bogus. At that point, I opted to get an old bike (with very low mileage) and make a scrambler for a little less than half the $4,300.
Honda mystifies me. I have a Honda CRF 230L which is the same bike but they discontinued it. Now they bring it back with a luggage rack and 75ccs less displacement. My 2009 model is still running on the original cables bulbs and chain. I replaced only tires brakes filter and oil, and a battery.
Congrats on the new bike! I was wondering how tall you were cause honestly the small bikes like the money or the grom are really fun and quick then they need to be. But love your content! Keep having run, keep riding on and keep uploading!
Noting about this bike is under 3k in the US. Ridiculous mark up because they can compared to the rest of the world. I bought a Lifan KPX 250 instead for under 3k and I’m loving it.
Very entertaining video, but... something tells me that little bike isn't going to last long :) Hey, can you provide a link tot he footpegs you put on it?
I’m currently driving a 650cc street bike but I wanna hit some trails. Not into grabbing a dirt bike and making it road legal -so I’m grabbing a dual sport. Getting the KLX300 for myself but I’m looking at an XR150L for my spouse to get them into bikes on something comfy, smooth and easy. Plus, never messed with carbs before because I’m a newer rider and most bikes have EFI. It’ll be nice to learn how to fiddle with even more parts so maybe one day I’ll feel comfortable with restoring an older bike -which has been a lifelong dream of mine.
Yea man, the 150 will be perfect for her. And if she is riding it it will be perfect stock, I only messed with the carb because I’m trying to do wheelies haha
This is what happens when Honda just makes a motorcycle cheaply out of all the parts they just have lying around. For example, that carburetter is the same one on my '96 XR200. That carburetter has been unchanged in Hondas lineup since the early 1980s.
Could you tell me again the kind of carb you replaced the original with? I have a 2023 that does the same thing, and it looks like you solved the problem. Great video!

What a fantastic motorcycle. I had the Indian version of the same named “ hero impulse” and the engine was from a Honda. Do check it out. My major use was at the trails and at the dirt track. Do try getting a high lift cam, a quick throttle and a nice exhaust and the character of the motorcycle changes. I was running the same setup. And yes, these are extremely reliable. Yea man they are huge every where else so it’s cool to see them in America!
Brooo I can’t believe you got a 150L this is like the BEST “cheap” bike you can buy here in Argentina, our economy is a kinda struggling so I thought these cheap bikes would never be seen in the US having the opportunity of buying as many japanese bikes as you have, enjoy the XR great vid!!!! You’ll definitely will manage to get amazing wheelies & tricks by practicing on it ! 😎😎
thank you man! I love the bike style that south america and places overseas have so I was excited to get on one of these
About 4,250 miles on ours. Great bike so far. Expect 50-55 max for a cruise speed.
Yep love mine too!
Simple and reliable that’s all we need, I want one
@@deborahchesser7375 and why we bought em! Simple, cheap, good, fun!
Thats really really slow....
@@lifeononeweel3008 Yep, but not bad for a 150cc bike.
I placed an order for mine last fall. Dealer called me today and said they are finally getting shipped in a few weeks.
When you gotta slide something over something like grips or that little shifter sock, use a blower nozzle with the air compressor to help get it on easy. The burst of air will stretch the rubber for you as you slide.
I've seen this trick before, looks super helpful! Need to get me an air compressor
Been riding mine for 6 straight years, its my everyday commuter bike.
so glad to see other people stoked on this bike, I also think its the perfect around town bike, I hope I might be able to get it as my first road legal bike
I was cracking upppp man this TwoStrokeJ guy really just does what he wants and doesn't care what other ppl think. When I grow up I wanna be like him, you could really tell he was in his zone this video right up his alley wit it

I sold my grom and have been eyeballing this hard since it came out as a replacement, was waiting for a video like this to come out. I’m subscribing, can’t wait to see more of this
Awesome to hear man! I'm glad you enjoyed it! If you want something similar to the speeds of a grom but honestly just more capable, I think this bike is perfect
Did you end up getting the xr150l?
I got the CRF150L which are a couple hundred more than the XR, got 3500k on it been an ok little bike so far. Got like 300 km out of the first tank. There are all kinds of oversized engine parts for them out of Indonesia where they are made, a full titanium Norifumi exhaust is like $306.
An exhaust set up would be sweet
It's only $2000 in the Philippines and almost every uncle in rural areas has it😂
i wish they bring it to sell in Thailand
Best bike I ever owned never broke down always started , never serviced , excellent trooper never misses a beat Honda xr125L variant uk 🇬🇧
I think the Lifan X-Pect or KPX 250 is a better value and they are fuel injected, so no carburetor nonsense and no extreme dealer fees.
Venom or Lifan KPX 250! Honda clone engine, 20 hp and 20 torque. $3200.00 delivered to your door.
I'm 6ft 265lbs. It takes me anywhere I want to go. Been riding cruisers for 20 years. This bike got me off the black top and I'm hooked.
Love my bike and i am looking to do the same carburator swap. Are you planning on doing a tutorial about the swap. Which original parts did you use from it?? You just gained another sub!!
I own one of these for 8 years now, and that thing is almost undestructable, its a perfect beater
that's what I've heard about them! We will see if mine can take a beating for that long haha
Love it Jay, I'm surprised you took the studs out of those footpegs! Had the same kind on my bike and loved the extra grip for wheelies
thanks man! I think the studs were just too aggressive for the shoes I normally wear haha felt like they were ripping apart the soles haha. If I had some thicker riding boots or something they would be perfect.
I just got thru talking mine off after seeing it done on video.
@@TwoStrokeJ fair enough man whatever makes you comfy haha, I usually ride in sneakers and they made a world of difference for knee knockers cause I could drop back without my foot falling off the brake, I'm on the shorter side tho so that's probably the real issue 😅
bros already getting them double ads before the vid, THE ALGORITHM IS PUSHING YOU MAN
I like the sound of that!!! Thanks for the support bro!
I recently got myself a chinese version of the xr shipped to my door for about $2000-$2300, but it had EFI instead of the carburator, its called the Lifan X-pect last time i checked, im trying to get my motrcycle liscense and do an msf course before i ride it again so im not one to review yet but the 3ish hours i have on it has been a wonderful experience and really easy to learn on cus its low power
Here's a Great upgrade speaking from someone whwas obsessed with wheelstanding anything with 2 wheels and a motor wear your riding gear man eventually the skin on your extremities eg : palms, elbows, knees, hips, butt gets thin and takes forever to heal riding in shorts with no cups on is for nubes . Happy Trails mate play it cool and you can ride for a long long time
😂thanks, you’ve just restored my faith in UA-cam, so many reviewers out there try and be sooo serious and basically just regurgitate what every other channel says about a new model it’s obvious they’re just try-hards with no clue. Being yourself is all that you can do - Chris Cornell.
i have an XT125R Yamaha. Almost the same bike, i think with same power, i just can't get it to wheelie. It's my main bike, so i don't want to dump it, but when i get another i'll break this baby in two. Practice makes perfect i guess.
These bikes are great for some light off-road and under 80km/h roads. So much fun.
yea they are man! I love mine so far
Used to peddle past one of these bikes that was for sale every morning and was forced to invest that money I made that summer wish I had just bought it 😢
Got mine a few weeks ago, 3500 OTD in Columbia SC. Same with me, first brand new vehicle I've ever purchased.
Great little beginner bike, loving it so far!
Carolina Honda? I sat on one of these there today. I was wondering how bad their fees would be.
@@DavidG-wv2nb Only about 500 bucks last year, and that was without any incentives going on. They seem to be fair over there.
Ok so the fact you called not being able to wheelie the crap out of the bike an "issue". Is worth a sub
I’m sure it would benefit from the bigger wheels and some nice tires though!
take a hamer with a long screw driver and hit inside of the exhaust...do it then test the sound until you reach the perfect tone...trust me its worth trying
yea I've seen a lot of people take the baffle completely out of the muffler on these. Apparently you can make a little but more power that way
I picked up a Suzuki DR200 enduro.
So yeah, the DRZ is a dinosaur.
damn haha that's even worse than I thought!
Nothing wrong with dinosaurs.
Excellent review buddy! Wife just bought me this for Christmas. Almost bought the Grom, glad she didn’t. Cool review, kept it clean and fun. Good job mister.
I get it, and I would love to ride an XR150. But now I don't feel so badly about having "overpaid" $2,000 for a KL250g Super Sherpa 6spd with 5.3k miles, or overpaid $2,000 for an XT225 6spd with 12k miles. And before think too much about an XR150, I have a $1,600 TW200 5spd with
Breaking in an engine is crucial to its lifetime, normally you would drive half RPM and half throttle for the first 1000km or 600 miles, then change the oil and gruadually increase the throttle an rpm from there . Also breakes and tyres normally need to break in about 100km )60 miles) before the get peak performance
Is that really the case with modern engines? I feel like break in was more relevant before modern machining tolerances, and precision cylinder sleeves and coatings.
@@thedanyesful Yes, still very important. A lot shorter lifespan, if not broken in properly.
What carburetor did you replace it with? Did it improve the speed as well?
The Honda xr creates loyal riders for life. It happened to me at 9 years old.
the beauty of carbs is you can squeeze more power without using computers.
If you want it to last, change the oil after break in period then after 100mi and again after another 100 to flush any metal flakes from machining.
A Yamaha rd350 has been a bike I’ve wanted for a long time. Some day I’ll ride one of those
The Honda XR150L is currently $1,588.00 USD in Negros, Philippines, as of Oct, 2023. (Helmet, registration for 3 yrs with Insurance, included, Wow) Just bought one, been On and Off road, it's a FUN TOY..!!!
I agree it’s super fun!!! Crazy how they inflate the price for the USA market though!
Would you start a low budget project with this bike ? There are a lot of parts that can be upgraded on these bikes for a low price 😏
That sounds like a great idea to be honest. Budget stunt bike / dual sport build
Didn't have to pull the tank, but I understand that the NA model has a different cable that has to be replaced to allow different carbs.
yea that's the same carb I used but I had to install a new throttle cable
na buy a DR 250 350 or 650 for 2500 and thats for a Clean one they have all the power you can want they are street legal, run forever and super easy to work on
In South Africa the cheapest decent bike is Hero Eco 150 trail previously (Hero Honda) is about half XR 150 price and Hero Xpulse 200 similar price to XR 150.
Edit - I never wheelie.
also fun fact. the power to weight ratio on this is identical to the same year grom.
Feels pretty much identical!
LOL as soon as you start filming in the car a Mtn Dew truck drives through the background. I found that very appropriate for a dirt bike video.
Right on brothaaa do the dewww
Bought one a couple months ago, in Jacksonville,N.C. Great bike. Bought it from Lejeune Motorsports, in Jacksonville, by the time they padded the bill, $ 4300.00. They have the market cornered here, they charge premium for everything. Oh well.
I really really want an XR150L for Commuting and Dirt Biking. While I won't be able to use the 401, it'll be perfect for riding up the 90km/h road to my work and back, as well as hitting some trails. It'll be a perfect first Motorcycle as I yet to even have my license. It's also really light so I can haul it on the back of my small SUV or Minivan with a Motorcycle rack with no issues
actually with good gas mileage and incredible reliability this thing is a great buy
This bike was tested to its limits when I got it. Its so durable.
Agreed
those are real good engines, just be sure to check the oil level after every ride. that honda engine likes to drink a lot of it. i had a honda cg titan 150 that has the same engine as the xr 150, and she had an addiction for oil, but if you just check it, you will be okay
If you want just the plain dirtbike look for a used crf150f made from 2005 to 2016 i think. I could be wrong. It has the same horsepower and weight
Looks like the crf250L headlight found itself on the XR150L. I had a 2004 Xr125L. Looked just like this. Even the rear drum brake
Being a 4 stroke bike with a sump, is oil starvation an issue when popping wheelies?
Obviously not an issue on 2T stuff.
At that point, I opted to get an old bike (with very low mileage) and make a scrambler for a little less than half the $4,300.
have to modify the crankcase brether. itl shoot all the oil right out of it
yea I saw that man! Definitely going to do that mod
Earned a like because of no ads alone. Much appreciated
They’ve been making this bike since 2003, they only just now brought it to the US market

I rode an XR125L 30,000km through Africa. All that money saved on the bike paid for living expenses for several months

Means it’s reliable haha
Hey can you do a in depth tutorial how to manual the xr150l? I have one but having hard time making it stand to a wheelie

Cheers and ride safe!

In 1985 I learned to ride on a 1983 Yamaha XT550. Only had 1200 miles on it and paid $900. Then got a 250 Ninja. Got hit on it before I made my first payment. Got a FZ600 with my insurance money. Got to many tickets and stopped riding. 23 years later in 2014 I bought my dream bike. A pristine 4002 mile 1989 Yamaha FZR1000. Now I am looking for a XT550 to ride back and forth to work on. This may fit the bill instead.
That was very thorough. Great job presenting this bike! Those wheelies at the end were awesome!
