The latest Docuseries video (episode 3) has information on what the shore team did for the noise (about 1/2 way through). All of the Docuseries videos are well done and include background crew/team/boat info . Kudos to the shore team for successful noise abatement on the break!! ***Edited to add link to the Docu Series Playlist ua-cam.com/play/PLWWSobLPRG0MV-rYUDTCVi1NB7yflu3Bd.html

Land team; please extend the thank you's and admiration to the crew and videographer! I would watch a 24/7 live stream. We need Info on WHAT WENT WRONG with the foil. HOW IT WAS FIXXED? Fair winds crew; Peace and love
I think I can say that we all suffered with you. I am very happy that you solved this problem and you can now have an efficient and healthy sleep during your remaining hell ride through the southern ocean. All the best for my favorite team Malizia! ❤️
Happy for the team that they took care of this noise problems. And I enjoy the daily updates. Any way you can extend these updates to 8-10 minutes? There is so much going on in 24 hours. Thanks
Klasse gemacht!
Awesome shore team lowering the noise level. Probably provides more concentration on getting the boat going consistently and continually faster. On tracker Team Malizia has moved back into 3rd and seems headed back into 2nd going 5 or so miles faster than the current 2nd place boat. The wind seems still oddly variable but Malizia seems is getting into a good groove! Go Team Malizia!!!
I was so worried for your sanity on that long leg with that crazy noises. Even just listening to the videos I'm absolutley amazed by the huge difference your shore team was able to pull of in just a few days. Hats off to them!
G day Boris 👍 great to see the team back onboard 💪💪 many thanks to Yann for stepping in for the skipper 👏👏👏 Top work to the shore crew Awesome work guys and girls 👍👍 Cheer’s 🍺🍺🥃🥃
Amazing difference in sound levels. I am happy for you all to have this relief. This was smart engineering and understanding how and what to change for the fix. Milizia crew is the best and going for the win. 👏💪⛵️
Great job of vibro acoustics. I did such a job 5 jears on trains at the beginning of my professional worklife. I would be interested if it was more than decoupling and damping the structure born noise. Happy to see you in better conditions. Benefit for the whole crew and thereby race performance of the boot.
You have no option for decoupeling of the keel, the keel bearing is part of the main structure of the boat. They can only do passive measures like sanding lead edges of the keelfin and use damping.
Eventually you have to tune the System. You can damp, move the responcefrequency by adding mass or absorption. Moddeling is possible. In any case, such an effect within this timeslott... amasing!
ua-cam.com/video/rHwpiMFhh00/v-deo.html "In Cape Town, the trailing edges of the keel, rudders and foils will be sanded to become asymmetrical. The sailors will receive medical consultation and custom made ear pieces."
They basically eliminated the vortex shedding instability and the corresponding frequency by making the structure asymmetric, thus shifting the separation point to one side of the keel/foils.
I can't believe how much better the noise is.... I thought a lot about how to solve the vibration issues, but not knowing how the foils actually attached to the boat restricted my ideas.. Building a rubber or silicone sleeve for the upper portion of the foil located inside the hull? Drilling a series of holes in the inboard end of the foil and filling them with rubber and silicone? Isolating any mechanical attachment point to the hull with a series of rubber, silicone or neoprene washers...etc. Back in the mid to late 1980s I helped build and test "J" foils for a hydrofoil sailboat project in Florida....absolutely amazing. The guys I worked with were brilliant. Best of luck and be safe...
Small design changes to the rudders, keel and fins lead to significant noise reduction. Much quieter, better conversational levels, improved sleep, no ear plugs or head phones. Hooray. Everyone is similing and more relaxed.

That's a wonderful improvement! I'd love to know what changes were made to render this dramatic improvement. So happy that the crew conditions are much more comfortable for the long haul ahead!!
I caught abit about making the keel and rudder asymmetrical..? I believe they might have engineered the trailing/leading edge too streamline creating a resonance that vibrated the parts. Maybe created a taper to favor one side? We need more information; am I right?
They will have filed the trailing edge so it’s no longer “square”; I.e made the trailing edge of the appendages no longer perpendicular to the centre-line of the boat. It’s commonly done on smaller planing/foiling boats, so not sure why it wouldn’t have been done from day 1 on Malizia, it’s a well known common cure for the same issue.

Absolutely wild that a few small changes can have such a dramatic impact. Well done shore team!
WHAT few small changes?
Absolutly great result with th noise reduction. ...so the chance to win this important leg will be greater.

Good job, shore crew!
Awesome crew, but this time an outstanding shore team. The new sound is a relief, a job well mastered. Keep it up and keep it tight.
The shore team did some magic. Well done!
Rosie imitating the noise... I will miss it :)
Wow, so much better. It's astounding

I truly thought that you would have lost a crew mate or two to insanity carrying on with the noise before. So happy and essential that it is repaired!
Super normal noises 👍🏻😀

Thats incredible difference! Bloody good job too, would have been even more stressy down there in the South on such a long leg. Well done team.
Excellent! The sound of silence!
That's much better. Good luck on this stage. I'm looking forward for your report.⛵

Big props to the technical shore team identifying and solving that noise issue! 👏🏽
Respect to the shore team. What a good job. Thanks for the excellent content. Go Team Malizia. Stay Safe.

Glad for you onboard, that the noise has reduced so much. Must be a pleasure now being out there.

Sounds like really magic engineering which needs a lot of experience and probably cannot be calculated.

I'm glad they took my advice.
Now I am curious,, what did the shore team do??? I can finally turn my volume back up, so I don't have to hold 🙉my ears shot! Happy for you guys.
Good luck on Leg 3 TM - hope to see you guys win this leg.⛵🌏
You peeps have me hooked! The content is strong so I'm bought. Go Malizia!

All those changes in one week in SA, ?
Wow that's better. Still sounds like your sailing into he'll.......very brave
Thanks for that impressive noise canceling. Even in the Name of the Whales. 😉
I'm wondering what the shore team actually did to improve the noise
they sanded the front edges of the rudders an keel asymmetric so the flow is not linear on both sides of the rudders and keel.
Sanding, foils and rudders

WOW! Well done the tech guys. That Legs 1-2 banshee howling was truly awful; the team could never have survived another 35 days of that.

A little wet sanding goes a long aways!
Wow I genuinely feel that noice would not be healthy for anyone. 👍what did they do to improve it? Different stay tension I guess👍
Is this just a different wind angle or at every point of sail, ?
How did they fix the noise?
Wow!!!!!
Cool.
And what did they change?
💯
and my pearson flyer goes 7 knots and I think we about to fly off and start cartwheeling....lol

That's unfortunate, that Rosie can't play the Screaming Sixties anymore.
she is a soprano
I wonder if she’s faster now. Less energy lost.
I think it probably went the other way. I am sure she was "too perfect" before..
