For me it's when he asks Riggs "You ever kill a baby?!?" and then when the young cop gets shot and he says "Another baby..." Hits hard every single time.
Yeah, it's easy to forget that Riggs was robbed of having a family when his wife was killed, and he's still very much a broken man over it. LW 4 completes his character arc beautifully, though.
Riggs lost his wife, lost the girl in the second movie, his dog (Sam) must have recently passed, and thought he was about to lose another love. Dude deserved a smoke.
Lorna, played by Renee Rosso, is a great addition to this franchise. She was also Thor's mother in the Marvel films. Lethal Weapon 4 wraps up the franchise beautifully.
Also a refreshingly positive depiction of an Internal Affairs agent for the time, when they were typically portrayed as whiny killjoys out to wreck the careers of good cops.
The dog is the reason this is my favorite lethal weapon. I was still living in Los Angeles when this movie came out. The Rottweiler I had when I was a kid was one of the grandchildren of the one in this movie. My dad bought him from the same breeder who trained the dog in this film. Practically identical. I can't watch this movie without thinking of him. He was the best dog ever. I still miss ya, Clyde.
The "Close is a Lingerie Shop without a Window" is a multilayered line, it is a replacement line that Russo eventually came up with herself, as the whole point was they wanted a non-sequitur, so Riggs can be confused, however it actually has deeper meanings. It is meant to be 1) Close doesn't count, like a Lingerie shop that has no front window to show off the lingerie, thereby not going to do well since no one sees the merchandise... 2) It is literally a Front, no Window means it is just a Front... 3) It doesn't draw much attention, again, a Front for a criminal place literally doesn't want to draw attention to itself and a Lingerie Shop without a Front Window would not draw much attention at all... 4) The original line was just going to be "Close doesn't count" but that was week, so they were literally tossing out lines to try to come up with something that was more in line with the silliness of the Series, and Rene Russo herself is the one that came up with this one, which just happened to have so many deeper interpretations that helped make it both confusing, funnier sounding, and more impactful in its secret possible meanings...
In the second film, Riggs was shot whilst speaking to the ladies of the night. The force of the blast sent him through a shop window, was that shop a lingerie shop? For some reason I recall some mannequins knocked over, possibly underwear models? I always wondered if that was the reference.
Lorna Cole is one of the best female characters to come out of any action movie. Rene Russo was just born to play her, and her chemistry with Gibson is just off the charts. In fact, this movie has some of the best character moments in the entire series. It's nice to Riggs opening himself up to a new love which, in a refreshing change of pace, doesn't end in tragedy, especially after all the pain and loss he suffered in the first two movies, and him simping for Lorna as she is kicking the crap out of bad guys is as entertaining as it is endearing. My favorite, however, is the boat scene, which has a serious argument for being the best moment between Riggs and Murtaugh and the ultimate testament to their friendship. It's a nice reversal of the first movie, with Riggs doing for Murtaugh what Murtaugh once did for him - Riggs has been down that road and knows first-hand that it doesn't lead to anything good. Gibson and Glover are phenomenal in that scene.
I think the boat scene is subtly one of the best acting moments you'll see in film as well. It sums up so much in a few minutes while making you feel everything for Riggs and Murtaugh and what they've gone through up to that point.
Riggs wasn't simping for Lorna, he was admiring a professional kick ass. Simping is negative, he was commenting on her form, style and technique and essentially serving as a commentator. Big difference.
@@dvass7253 Rene Russo is great. She's excellent in this, she was a badass in 'Under Fire' and she was sexy AF in 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. She and Riggs doing school-yard level bickering in the elevators is hilarious.

Hey Ashleigh! In a way, the Lethal Weapon movies and Die Hard movies (1 & 2 in this case) are loosely connected: both movies were produced by Joel Silver - one of the BIGGEST action movie producers of the 80’s and 90’s. As a result, much of the crew and performers worked on / appeared in both movies. He has a specific style (every 10 pages in the script needs another action sequence) and has always been heavily involved in the overall look and feel of his movies.
"Close is a lingerie shop without a front window, Riggs." In the first Lethal Weapon, Mr. Joshua (Gary Busey) shoots Riggs in the chest during a drive-by, blowing Riggs through the window of a lingerie shop. Murtaugh runs to Riggs, ripping his shirt open to reveal Riggs' bulletproof vest. They both comment on how close the shot was to either killing Riggs or, if the shot had been lower, it would have made Riggs "sing soprano" for the rest of his life. :) Edited to add: you missed the post-credits scene. Most people don't know it has one. I swear it's worth it. :D
Very few people would get that reference, OP, so kudos to you to put that together. Since she's IA, she has access to all files at any time (I would suspect) and either previously knew about his incident from LW1, or did some quick research on him and came along the report about the incident and decided to throw that at him expecting he may draw a blank or not get the joke. Yes!!! There was a 3 Stooges computer game! My roomie in college had it on his Amiga! We played the crap outta that game! Wow this takes me back, holy cow.
The movie's opening is my favorite scene in the entire series. Riggs and Murtaugh arguing over a ticking time bomb perfectly captures the vibe of the Lethal Weapon movies. And yes, they actually did blow up that building for that scene. They sought out a building that was scheduled for demolition and found one in Orlando, FL, which had recently constructed a new city hall and were demolishing the old one.
This one's my favorite in the series! I think it's the funniest. I love the shake-ups in the character dynamics between Riggs and Murtaugh. Finally, Lorna absolutely kicks ass!
Too bad they ruin her by making her a housewife in 4. In fact except for Jet Li I hate Lethal Weapon 4. You know when a movie will sometimes show outtakes in the end credits? LW4 plays like they took the outtakes and made that the movie.
I think someone was confused... Die Hard 4 is amazing, Die Hard 5 is utter trash. Die Hard for me is a trilogy. Die Hard, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard. Justin Long is just always hilarious and Bruce is Bruce.
Your commentary and mannerisms are adorable to levels I can't even express properly. Please for the love of God don't ever change a thing. I could listen to you monologue for hours and never get bored. You can read 20 random fortune cookies and I'd find it amazing. I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel months ago. You are so amusing and an instant spirit lifter. Thank you for being you. As for the franchise, it was meant as a throwaway movie that happened to gain a LOT of attention and traction and then it took off and became a full blown thing. They even made a TV series about it (though it was AWFUL). Not bad for a movie that was supposed to be a one-and-done eh?
I, too prefer the LethalWeapon franchise over Die Hard. Although, Die Hard IV is my favorite in that series, and I predict you'll like it too. Lethal Weapon IV is also excellent, if a bit bittersweet.
Mel and Rene also did another movie called Ransom. This movie pulls at every heart string that can be found. Have tissues close by if you decide to watch it
You’ve got to watch 4. Don’t know who is saying it’s trash. It’s the best in the series in my opinion and the perfect end to the series. Not sure if 5 is a good idea but we will see!
As a kid of the 80s (I was 18 in 1990), I grew up with all these films and the Lethal Weapon series have been a firm favourite for me for quite a few decades. Thank you Richard Donner. Loved the Sting theme song to this one.
Nice reaction. Mel Gibson has never been part of a bad film. You can tell these guys had fun making the movie. Here are 3 films you might check out #1 Top Secret #2 Police Academy 2 #3 Death to Smoochie
The Three Stooges video game was great! It was on the original Nintendo, and you played through scenes from the classic Three Stooges shorts. Later re-released on GameBoy Advanced and Playstation.
There was a time in movies where "teflon-coated cop killer bullets" were their own genre. As much as I love the Lethal Weapon movies I hate the way Riggs and Murtaugh spend three entire films bullying Leo. Renee Russo has this weird thing in her career where she's featured in one movie and barely in its sequel. Yeah, enjoy Lorna in this one because she's completely sidelined in the fourth movie. She's Tom Berenger's love interest in Major League and gets all of one scene in Major League 2. It's weird. If you love outtakes you're going to LOVE Lethal Weapon 4 because it plays like an entire movie of nothing but outtakes. Most of the scenes are Gibson and Glover goofing around on the set and of course bullying the hell out of Leo because funny.
To be fair, Leo IS a genuine con-artist and crook as well as personally annoying. Yes, he becomes their friend eventually, but he upsets them on a professional level as well as a personal one. They can't bust him for all the things he did because he is turning evidence, but some ball-busting is the very least he has coming. We forgive Leo a lot because Joe Pesci is amazing.
Lethal Weapon 4 is so loaded with characters, it's hard for everyone except Riggs and Murtaugh to get as much attention. Also there are the 2 big additions to the cast, and while Russo's screentime is down, it plays into the growth of her and Rigg's relationship.
The director, Richard Donner, was notorious for not using model buildings for explosions. So the building at the beginning was a real office structure slated for demo that they used, and really blew it up. Likewise the housing development was one that had gone bankrupt, so they did burn it to the ground. Practical effects that made these movies so much more real.
The building at the beginning was the old Orlando City Hall. The officer that says “Bravo” to Riggs & Murtaugh was the mayor of Orlando at the time. The post credit scene they found the Hotel Soreno in St Petersburg that was slated to be brought down.
Lethal Weapon 4 is my favorite of the franchise. Superb character development, interwoven stories, and great humor combine to make it the perfect ending!!
At some point you should watch "National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1", which is a parody of the Lethal Weapon movies (and no despite its title, there were never any sequels), that and Hot Shots, which is a parody of Top Gun. There is a Hot Shots Part 2 (or part "Deux" rather), but that's a parody of the Rambo movies which you haven't seen yet.
One of Hollywood’s great bromance franchise. Great timing with the “Grab the Cat” line. Also, Darlene Love does not get enough credit for her roll as Roger’s wife. Baby Come Home!
Thanks for reviewing this. I haven’t seen this since it came out. It was a big deal here in St. Pete because they blew up a hotel here for it, but it didn’t make it in the movie, so in the theaters after the credits they showed the implosion. I’m too cheap for Patreon, but if you like hockey, you should consider the movie Slap Shot
Usually I hate when they make older movies into TV series, but the first 2 seasons of Lethal Weapon the series was soooooo good! Up until Damon Wayans decided he didn’t want to keep on with the show & showed his ass. He never wanted to do the show anyways & only said yes because he thought it would get canceled ASAP because they usually do. The studio said if he said yes that they would definitely greenlight the next project he wanted really bad. He didn’t count on the “nobody actor” playing Riggs becoming the show favorite and them getting a second season. Then he started constantly picking fight with him, not showing up to table reads, or late to set etc…anything he could do screw with shooting the show. He even started fights & leaked them saying that Clayne Crawford (Riggs) had anger issues. They fired Clayne, because he wasn’t the more famous star and killed off Riggs on the show. They brought in another actor & the show went downhill FAST and the Damon quit because he’d been trying to do that since season 1. Thankfully after all that the crew & the other regular actors on the show stood up for Clayne as well as so many guest stars. They all said he was amazing to work with and got shafted by the whole thing. Hilarie Burton Morgan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s wife) played Clayne’s girlfriend on the show & their families because very close friends. Clayne’s wife Kiki babysat for Hilarie when she didn’t have anyone to watch Gus while they filmed. Clayne has stayed friends with all the other costars from the show & they help with charities he has & he does for them as well. Clayne Crawford is an Alabama boy, he lives less than an hour from me. I’ve been to one of his charity picnics which a few of his celebrity friends came to o & it was so much fun. It didn’t feel like an over produced thing where the celebrities charged $$ to meet them or anything, we just had amazing food & a charity raffle and everyone just hung out, chatted & there was a live band as well.
Mel Gibson has said that of all the leading ladies he worked with over the years that he had wonderful chemistry with Rene Russo; not just here in Lethal Weapon 3 and 4; but also in another film called Ransom (1996). If you’ve never seen it, put it on your list of films to see in 2025; and check out Popcorn in Bed’s reaction video to Ransom. Very memorable.
It took me many years before I realized who Trish Murtaugh was. She is played by Darlene Love, a singer who was in the 1960s group The Blossoms. She has a FANTASTIC voice. She also was living with Bill Medley the singer of "I've Had The Time Of My Life" from "Dirty Dancing" and the duo group of The Righteous Brothers fame.
Such a fun movie. I did not care for it after I saw it in the theater, but the more I watch it the more I love it. And the extended cut does a great job of adding more to Murtaughs story and the catching of the villain. Actually the extended cut of the first movie is really awesome as well. And the fourth movie is probably my favorite, because it has so much heart and ties up the stories really well. I cry at the end credits of the fourth one every time, watching the pictures of all the cast and crew.
At 29:17, when Joe Pesci's character, Leo, says, "Hello, car 54, where are you!?", that's an homage to his co-star, Fred Gwen, the actor who played the judge in "My Cousin Vinny". Fred Gwen starred in the 60's sitcom series, "Car 54, Where Are You?" "My Cousin Vinny" came out in March 1992. And, LW3 came out three months later in May 1992.
I never saw "Lethal Weapon 4". In an interview, I heard that the actors improvised much of the script. Once I heard that, I decided it would probably be cr@p. As they say in Texas, "El Paso".
Ashleigh, Mel and Rene did two more movies together. Lethal Weapon 4 of course and Ransom which was a remake of a classic thriller. Mel and Renee did a fantastic job in it. Btw, I hope you watched the after credits of Lethal Weapon 3. It was short but funny as heck.
Riggs eating the milk bone dog biscuits, was first done in "The Greatest American Hero" with the FBI agent, Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) eating them while on a stakeout with no food in the house!
My favorite of the four! Great villain, and I love the addition of Lorna. Best scene in the whole series is Martin and Roger on the boat. "I got three beautiful kids. I love them, they're yours."
Messing with him enough to mess up defusing the bomb and allow the whole building to be demolished? Which he had to know would get them in serious trouble, even if he didn't expect to be busted back down to patrol? I'm not buying that. He was Black Ops, sure, and in the first movie, he recognized the professional-level work of the bomb in Trixie's house, so maybe that's a plot hole, but maybe not. I don't know enough about special forces to say, but I'd guess that it's not unreasonable to think that even in a special forces branch, different people still had different specialties. His was sniping, not bombs. My head canon is that he picked up enough from being around it to recognize good work, but not enough to actually be able to defuse the bomb in the garage.
15:48 Ashleigh's reaction to Riggs chomping down on a raw onion 😂 Evidently you've never had a Walla Walla Sweet onion. You can seriously eat one like an apple. We Washington State natives are proud of 3 crops: apples, onions, and rain.
The best part of the movie is the armored car lady 🤣🤣. Murtaugh’s house is Todd and Margot’s house from National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. You can see the Griswold house next door.
Funny thing about Die Hard with a Vengeance, that was story was intended for LW3. But DH and LW are both composed by Michael Kamen, so you can hear the similarity between the music from LW series and the DH series (from 1 to 3)
This may blow your mind, but Stuart Wilson who plays the main villain Jack Travis also played the main villain in "The Mark Of Zorro", and "No Escape" as well as playing Dr Hatcher in "Hot Fuzz".
I also am a bigger fan of the Lethal Weapon franchise. For me it was almost by default because I saw Lethal Weapon way before I saw Die Hard. Also, did you notice that Rene Russo who played Lorna was also Frigga (Thor's Mom) in the MCU? She's so hot and badass. Anyway, can't wait for Hallobeans 🐈🎃
Ashleigh, you forgot to mention that Die Hard 2's bad guy was the guy that played Death in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, 😆 ( I realize there's no way that you would have noticed that, or remembered him from Die Hard 2) He was also one of Andy's prison friends in The Shawshank Redemption.
Josh Ackland (De Nomolos in Bogus Journey) was also a villain in Lethal Weapon 2. Just funny to me that both of them were in action sequels and a comedy sequel.
I love these movies. After all these years and repeated viewings - they can still make you laugh, cry and sit on the edge of your seat. Love die hard also - but lethal weapon easily beats many movies from back then. Then that sexy sax playing in the background! Hello!!!!
I love that for the exploding building they actually shot a demolition live and incorporated it into the movie. And you can see from the news footage either Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, or their stunt people, running away from the building before it explodes. Specifically, news footage from Orlando's ABC and CBS affiliates since it was Orlando City Hall. The then-mayor plays the bomb squad guy who gets sarcastic with Riggs and Murtagh.
There is nothing about Rene Russo that is great value anything. She’s thought of as one of the most beautiful women ever. Watch Thomas crown affair. It will melt your screen.
25:00 Rorion Gracie choreographed this fight scene and that's him. And he choreographed the final fight in Lethal Weapon 1 when Gary Busey fought Mel at the end. Mel puts Gary in a triangle choke.
The friendship displayed in these films is great. I think an especially effective scene is the misfire, with Riggs covering up for it immediately. As with every video of yours, I recommend the movie Imagine Me & You, as well as Zsazsa Zaturnnah.
Yeah, this is definitely my favorite out of all four films, though the one after this is pretty good too. I just love the addition of Lorna; finally Riggs meets his match. And it's just the most fun for me of all of them because the first two are so dark, so this one just is a fun romp in comparison and that's why I think I enjoy it the most.
Lethal Weapon 5 is being directed by Mel Gibson after the passing of the original franchise director. People are worried it's not going to be the same but i have faith the director of Braevheart, The Passion of the Christ and Hacksaw Ridge will do just fine.
"I have three beautiful children. I love them. They are yours."

Lethal Weapon 4 still my favorite of the series
I, too prefer the LethalWeapon franchise over Die Hard. Although, Die Hard IV is my favorite in that series, and I predict you'll like it too. Lethal Weapon IV is also excellent, if a bit bittersweet.
Now after you watch the 3 lethal weapons movie. You can watch Loaded Weapon which a spoof on those movies
Mel and Rene also did another movie called Ransom.
This movie pulls at every heart string that can be found. Have tissues close by if you decide to watch it
In my opinion, Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell and Richard Dean Anderson are the only three who ever pulled off the mullet.
This is my personal favourite of the franchise, its so unusual to find a series that starts out great and never dips below very good.
Die Hard 4 is still OK, it has its moments ... and Timothy Olyphant, the 5th is truly horrible.
You’ve got to watch 4. Don’t know who is saying it’s trash. It’s the best in the series in my opinion and the perfect end to the series. Not sure if 5 is a good idea but we will see!
Lorna (Rene Russo) was Thor's mom in the MCU. She was killed in Thor 2 but showed up in Endgame.
And I think in Loki season 2?
I love all 4 lethal weapon movies they all good in their own different ways...
It is okay to like Lethal Weapon more than Die Hard, because Lethal Weapon are not just action they are also also buddy cop movies, which adds a lot.
One stupid thing about this movie, they hit the breaks on an armiured car, and the guy crashes through the bulletproof glass.
BULLETproof
Not BODYproof.
Don't @ me, I'm not caring about the bitching.
@sumthingwikked4257 pretty sure if it can stop a bullet it can stop a body.
Also, say Hi to Thor’s Mom!!
I really hope Buffy comes back real soon! 😊
Was also released for C64, Amiga, Apple II (iirc) and PC. I remember playing it on Amiga back in the day.
Great reaction Ashleigh. 1000 thumbs up for Mel Gibsons hair mullet in this movie. A classic hair mullet never dies.
27:50 "off the rails"
it was right there lol.
And yet it ended up being Teflon coated frying pans that killed tons of people. Weird how things work out.
We need the Thomas Crown Affair remake with Rene Russo. It has been on some polls but needs to be on your list.
oh it's def on the list
Great soundtrack
@@awkwardashleigh good.
Yes, Ashleigh needs to see *more of Rene Russo 😉
She was in a recent horror movie called Velvet Buzzsaw. Definite Hallow-Beans material!
Lethal Weapon 4 is my favorite of the franchise. Superb character development, interwoven stories, and great humor combine to make it the perfect ending!!
Nah, both lethal Weapon 4 and Live Free Or Die Hard are great movies with some great additions to the cast.
That was a sweet onion, Ashleigh.
No problem eating those raw.
This is my favourite of the four _'Lethal Weapon'_ movies!
I just rewatched Loaded Weapon Part 1. It is hilarious!
Viiiilderness gooorls!
Lots of cast members she loves too.
I second that! Loaded Weapon is the best spoof movie ever!
"No problem!!! No problem..." best cameo ever
One of Hollywood’s great bromance franchise. Great timing with the “Grab the Cat” line. Also, Darlene Love does not get enough credit for her roll as Roger’s wife. Baby Come Home!
These films are all fantastic. They're my go to if I'm feeling blue, which I have been, so I'm really glad you dropped this. There isn't a bad entry.
Contrary to what others may say, this is my favorite of the four DW movies. It has more humor, banter, explosions, and of course, Renee' Russo.
Yes - there was indeed a "The Three Stooges" game in 1987.
The thumbnail looks like Joe Pesci frightened Ashleigh 😂
I CANNOT WAIT FOR YOU TO WATCH THE FOURTH ONE!!
I hope you watched the post-credits scene. It's not a major one, but it's a fun bookend for the movie. :)
So much fun re-watching it with you.
In The Line Of Fire is a must-see. Rene Ruso and Clint Eastwood.
Anyone else notice the actor who played Jack Travis was also the village Doctor in Hot Fuzz
Riggs eating the milk bone dog biscuits, was first done in "The Greatest American Hero" with the FBI agent, Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) eating them while on a stakeout with no food in the house!
4 is like... the most perfect ending to any series ever lol. Love them all but I'll be extra excited when you see that one.
24:52 it says something when Riggs is afraid of you losing it lol
You went high and I went low. We were in perfect harmony. It's so hard, to say good-bye.....
My favorite of the four! Great villain, and I love the addition of Lorna. Best scene in the whole series is Martin and Roger on the boat. "I got three beautiful kids. I love them, they're yours."
Remember Riggs was Black Ops and has built and defused a lot bombs. He's just messing with Murtock.
"WILD THINGS" with Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards, Bill Murray, Robert Wagner is Definitely a movie to see!!
Ashleigh, you forgot to mention that Die Hard 2's bad guy was the guy that played Death in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, 😆 ( I realize there's no way that you would have noticed that, or remembered him from Die Hard 2)
He was also one of Andy's prison friends in The Shawshank Redemption.
Josh Ackland (De Nomolos in Bogus Journey) was also a villain in Lethal Weapon 2. Just funny to me that both of them were in action sequels and a comedy sequel.
Best buddy cop chemistry of the 80s...
These were so good! Too much fun watching with you :P
