  • Feel the Soil, Not the Plant! Simple words but there's a lot of foundation behind it which I discuss in this video. Come join Louisiana Simple Living as I discuss this critical topic enabling you to be successful as a gardener. Many gardeners, especially new ones, don't recognize the damage they currently may be doing to the soil if they focus solely on the plant and not the soil.

    In Metairie Louisiana here!
Good informative video. I’m a second year gardener, got about 30 fruit trees, 8 dragon fruit plants, sugar cane, a bunch of berries, couple grapes vines, vegetables and peppers, all crammed in my small backyard.
I am just now finding out about caring for soil health rather than using synthetics. I’m glad to see a neighbor speaking on the same topic.
The way you broke it all down made it a bit easier to understand the how/why, and now I feel like I have a clearer perspective.
    Thanks for the video!

How is the dragon fruit doing? Do you bring them inside during the cold days? I've also never grown sugar cane. That would be pretty cool too. Sounds like you got a lot going on in your back yard, like mine. I try to break down my videos in ways that I would better understand. It's great that you got a good understanding from how I presented the information. Thanks for watching and commenting! It means a lot!! Thanks again.!

@@LouisianaSimpleLiving So I didn’t bring a single plant inside over the winter. Also didn’t cover anything with protection either. I wanted to see how everything fairs out, being my first winter with this big of a garden. The only thing that died was my banana tree, but they grow back anyways so it wasn’t a big deal.
As for the dragon fruit, only a few of the branches had cold damage, but they mainly were new smaller less developed branches, so I was probably gonna prune them off anyway, all the mature branches did fine!

Feed the soil and staying organic is definitely the most important thing we can do to be successful in the garden over the long term.

Any recommendations on where to get mulch and compost? I’m in Louisiana Baton Rouge area ascension parish

I use Clegg's Nursery typically but also use Lowe's or Home Depot. They all have mulch and compost. Clegg's has it as 1-yrd bulk and bags, while Lowe's and Home Depot have it in bags.

I’m in Terrytown, LA & I got a free dump truck full of oak much from registering with Chip Drop. I registered last year (2021) with no results. I registered Feb 15, 2022 & received a knock on the door March 15 @ 5:00pm while fixing dinner; no call, just an email I didn’t see until much later. You have to be ready to receive it immediately. It was beautiful mulch with a small amount of sticks & trash (plastic water and soda cans).

@@robintranchina6588 I gotta sign up for that. That's some good mulch. Have you been happy with it? Anybody know if this is available in greater Baton Rouge area?

@@LouisianaSimpleLiving I am very happy with the mulch I received! The mulch I got came from NOLA Tree Solutions, but you never know where it’s coming from. Before I let him dump it, I asked him what kind of tree it was & if it was termite infested. I did not want to introduce termites into my yard. There were some chunks & sticks, but I just used those to burn in my fire pit. For the most part it was bagged quality but better because it was free. It rained the night before he delivered it & got stuck and needed to be pulled out which left big ruts in my front yard, but I can fix that. You just have to be careful not to let him back up over pipes cause it could break your water, gas & sewer lines. I would do it again. I wish I knew of a place locally that would drop off free compost or even free compost that I could pick up. I do have a compost pile, but I have only grass clippings, kitchen scraps, & garden debris; no leaves. If I see bags of leaves on the side of the road on garbage day, I will pick them up.
