I got the infamous "Hood Open" warning so I decided to try this. It was a Saturday night and the dealership was closed so a little research online helped me find out how to remove it. Once I had it in my hand the rest was just common sense.
The Hood Latch Sensor is nothing more than a round stainless Steel Spring pressed up against a button. When the hood closes the button is pressed and the circuit is closed signaling that the hood is closed. Cleaning it was a free, easy to do and a great way to spend a Saturday night ;)
P.S. Make sure to pull the Stainless steel Spring up a little to bring it back to life. Judging from the way it is designed these sensors usually fail because the springs are not bouncing back like they used to. VERY easy to do.
Love your outlook of fixing something instead of buying new when it’s not necessary. Know your ride and learn to be Macgyver!
Where I come from we weigh the time and money spent in gas and money spent to replace something vs taking the time to clean/repair it. I will replace stuff but THIS? lol, this is a fix too easy to not even try lol.
It’s October, 2021 and the hood latch sensor finally returned the infamous “hood open” warning so I had to watch this video again to clean it 😂. Wish me luck
Just a follow up on this little DYI.... It's been 4 months now and the Hood latch is fine. No problems with it whatsoever :)
Thank you for this video, my A4 kept saying add oil despite topping up nearly 2L. Checked this switch after watching your video and problem, cleaned it and boom! sorted!!!! Saved myself a lot of money, many thanks 👍
That is amazing!!!! Actually my cousin had the same issue with his Q5 and it ended up being the hood latch sensor as well. He paid the dealership to fix it but you should make a video on how to do it. It’s really not that hard.
What car is this for? A spaceship?
Thanks for the video, but I mistakenly placed the tooth brush back in the medicine cabinet! ..............oops! now I have bright clean teeth! LOL.
Lol
Update, I just cleaned the sensor FOUR years after the initial removal and cleaning. Hood open warning is gone for another 4 years???? Let's see what happens
Could this issue cause the alarm to go off randomly? My 2018 FIT alarm has been going off a lot today for seemingly no reason. So far it seems if I pull the interior hood release and then lock the car, the alarm doesn't go off anymore. I don't fully open the hood I just pop it.
@Matthew Singer Yes it can and will. My Volvo S80 will do that if I fidget with the sensors since they need cleaned or replaced (I have 2 hood latches 😪).
My car locks normally and lights flash but then boom, hours later it's going off until I leave it unlocked or it finally just goes back to the constant message the hood is unlocked. Sucks when it happened at night.
I want to try to clean the hood sensor without removing it, can it be done? Are there any sprays recomended, maybe contact cleaner?
CRC QD Electronic Cleaner. Sold at auto parts store.
@@mikewashlake927 thank you so much
2018 Silverado I blasted mine with CRC electronic cleaner, without taking it out, $10 can, used about 1/2. But I couldn’t really tell where to blast. The little sensor button is behind the spring. It worked fine for 2 years but started setting off the alarm again, at the worst possible time. So I took it off this time. Only took 5 min. And I’m gonna hit it with some electrical protector spray!
I tried that and over lubricated it which is what initially caused the fault. It doesn't hurt to try it but be prepared to remove it. Not that hard. You can do it :)
Thank you!! Damn thing is so frickin annoying. Will do this over the weekend.
It lasted me 4 years lol. i just cleaned it again so it may go another 4 years. Hell, that little sensor is gonna outlast the car.
Great video, should be the same procedure for a 2010 Jaguar right. Is there a code to clear, or will it clear itself?
Thanks Deborah, the warning should clear itself.. If you're getting a fault code then it needs to be cleared via a diagnostic tool. If the Jaguar is using the exact same parts then yes but for the most part, as long as you take your time and do it slowly and methodically you can't go wrong.
Just short out the connection with a paperclip and never have to worry about it again
how
@@jamaican600abledid you find out how
CHRYSLER DEALER HER IN TOWN WANTED TO CHARGE OVER $100- TO REPLACE MINE -- I told them to go pound sand.
Thanks man
Where is this located
If you own a range rover 2009-20013 and may be later, open the hood and the sensor is on your left under the left hood latch. The range rover comes with three latches. Center, Left and right. The left and right ones are identical with the exception that the left hood latch (passenger side NA) has sensor clipped onto it.
Brill thanks for this👍
Mostly I saw was a hand. Action was behind it. :(
i did this and still has hood light
????
Did you over lubricate it? That is what caused the fault to begin with.
What does very Canada mean?
You can hear the Canadian Geese in the background.
@@swingerinsure I'm more confused now because I don't know why I even watched this video(2 years ago)...I don't own this type of vehicle or ever have this issue.
Update your title.
