  • Nick came to Full Face Orthodontics with the presumption of needing surgery to fix his archway. Dr Mahony and Full Face Orthodontics used Damon appliances and non-surgical solutions for this amazing transformation.

The key to this entire success is the palate expander. Skeletal expanders are the ones that will provide stable results with minimal chances at relapse. Skeletally installed expanders are the types that have mini screws or TADs (temporary anchorage devices) implanted into maxilla, using mechanical forces to draw the palate apart. A trained orthodontist should initiate the expansion with a cortical puncture prior to the installation of the expander to ensure that there is a safe split of the maxillary bone required for optimal expansion.
Keep all of this in mind before you initiate orthodontics with your provider. Don't get screwed and spend thousands. Find out of skeletal expansion is something they can do to expand your palate, provided you have a narrow palate to begin with.
The damon system is also in fact the latest and most advanced system for braces. See how some patients are missing teeth? That's a result from extraction orthodontics, which is bad. All the orthodontist has to do is expand the palate with an expander and more room will be generated for those teeth to grow in properly. Most orthodontists believe that expansion is not possible unless you're an adolescent...but that is not the case at all. Skeletal expansion is absolutely achievable in patients of all ages.

is it possible for a 17 years old to expand?

does TADs help to shorten your middle face?

@@centelliaassiatica2194 yes absolutely, your success rate is still very great at being at 17 year old for the suture to split. find an MSE provider near you. It shortened mine but it's not the TADs that do it...it's the fact that transverse expansion occurs in the maxillary dimensions. your nose will have a better chance at breathing efficiently.

1/8 th mm per day is what I do based on John Mew research, which he calls semi-rapid expansion. Which equates to a 1/4 turn. 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock for example, then 3 to 6 o’clock. It would appear that 7/8 of a millimetre per week is something the body can keep up with or 1/8 per day.

When you say turning slowly vs rapid expansion- how often are you turning the screw? I really believe in what you said in one of your interviews, you don’t extract for space , you extract for face. Thank you for all your effort in sharing your knowledge Dr. Mahony.

Superscrew. Turn once a day. That's 1/12 of a mm or 1mm every 2 weeks if the pt takes one day a week break.

I got Damon braces 2/2019. My jaw has expanded to fit all of my teeth, but one side is much more expanded which gives me a crooked smile, my jaw and face just look different on each side. The longer I have them the more the one side expands and the more uneven I look 😩 I have been telling my orthodontists for about 8 months now but they just continue to do the same thing. I’m supposed to get them off in 2/22, but I’m thinking by that time the situation will be even more extreme. I wish I had gone with traditional braces.
