LYRICS:
Esurientes implevit bonis: et divites dimisit inanes. Suscepit Israel puerum suum,
recordatus misericordiae suae. Sicut locutus est ad patres nostros, Abraham et semini eius
in saecula.
(He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering
his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel. As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.)
Magnificat
John Rutter’s Magnificat for soprano soloist, choir and orchestra was written in 1990, and the première took place in May of that year in Carnegie Hall, New York. The text, based on the prayer ascribed by St Luke to the Virgin Mary on learning that she was to give birth to Christ, is extended by the interpolation of Marian prayers and poems chosen by the composer, to create a celebratory work reminiscent of outdoor processions in honour of the Virgin.
John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.

Me too! God is speaking to our heart :-)
Same here. Just beautiful.
Thank you so much, Mr Rutter!
Upon hearing this piece, it’s brought me to tears, don’t know why. Just beautiful how the music floats in the air and into your heart.
First time I heard this I cried. Beautiful. Esurientes implevit bonis.
i miss singing this song during college days...
Thanks for your generosity in sharing the beautiful yarn with your subscribers! I found you about a year ago, and have learned how to keep my edges straight, and my stitches are much neater now. Thank you! Good luck in your downsizing!
recently i am studying to conduct this work and amazed at the greatness of every details of the composition. among the pieces, esurientes is the most moving part, by means of the messages of the text, soothing atmosphere, harmonic progression, position just before the ending, and in all aspects. thanks God for sending this genius composer to us in our era~!
It certainly is a true masterpiece from a contemporary composing genius.
This song and Et Misericordia reflect the infinite majesty and mystery of God, Heaven, and Us within Creation... Listening to this Magnificat is like imagining being the Virgin Mary looking into the infinite sky and seeing incomprehensible wonders and blessings. I know Rutter doesn't believe in Christianity, but he could have fooled me. I think God must be working through him anyway
Such lavish harmonies and phrases. Lovely.
Beautiful!
Sublime. Together with the second section of Quia fecit mihi Magna
stunning work and performance!
I do not mind Mozart or Beethoven, but this is music for us.
poor earless man !
