Thank you. At night I am typically shooting in the 3000K-4000K range. City lights tend to be all over the map with colour temperature so you may want to play a bit to find best results depending on your environment. Cheers!
Nice one Steve, good explanation. I must admit i always used to fly with auto WB, but gonna start with manual setting from now on. If my videos look crap, i will blame you. 😂 Liking your drone stuff, knowledgable and well presented. 👏
Thanks a lot brother , i do Drone Videos but this tip i just learned and its awesome. Everybody who has a drone and dont know this ,should know this right now!
I keep learning from you! I started with the spark and now the mini2. One of the things I must master is white balance and thius has made it clearer to me. Thanks Steve.
Great explanation of the white balance settings on the Mavic MIni. And I was also surprised when added manual white that they offer customized settings such as sunny and cloudy. Nice video, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks Kenny, I appreciate it. We are all good. It's been a struggle staying focused, that's for sure. Lots going on but I'm sure it's like a lot of folks. Take care!
Well done video, makes it easy to visualize what takes place. Back in the old days when film was used for recording images, film manufactures made transparency film (slide film for projection) that was balanced for tungsten "3200K" or daylight "5500K". Depending on your shooting environment you used what was best for the light situation. No sliders for adjustment like today. Enjoy your videos and always learn something.
Thanks Chuck! I appreciate the view, comment and kind words. I didn't catch the camera bug during the film days, I started with a Canon Rebel DSLR. As I progressed I started using flash a lot and that's when I really started to understand white balance. The flashes are balanced at ~5500K so I had to use coloured gels if I wanted to blend them with the ambient light. It was fun to use the gels creatively too but best of all it really helped me really understand white balance. I used a friend's film camera once. Wow, was it a shockerl! You don't realize how much you take for granted and how much "math" the camera does for you until you use one of those - haha! Cheers!
new intro , new bridge from the new city you had been moving to. Lot more nature ... and great content for white balancing cause nature is always the place where white balance auto had made me trouble without really knowing that white balancing auto is causing the issues I had when turning around or panoramic shoots or especially over reflecting water or snow. Until you explained that on the spark I had back then. Great work - thanks.
Thanks for watching and paying attention to the details. White balance in nature can be tricky. Blue water, green trees, etc - too much of one colour can incorrectly influence auto white balance. It always drove me nuts that the automated flight modes were full auto - exposure and WB.
Thank you for great explanations, white balance was kind of a mystery to me. You are the first one who point out that auto->manual white balance switch actually auto update the values, thats good to know. I will start use it on my Mini 2 now, thanks.
Thanks for watching! I have been planning to do something similar for camera settings for quite a while now. Hope to get it done soon. Stay tuned. Cheers!
Thanks Don and thanks for thinking about us. We are all good here. Lots going on, which has made it a struggle at times but I am working to get things back on track. Hope you and yours are all doing well. Cheers!
LOL. All the white balance principles apply regardless of the camera or drone. Likely the Mini2 will have the exact same white balance control for custom. Cheers!
Thanks Don! Yeah, it seems funny on the entry level Mini. I always felt WB was done quick and dirty to placate the masses then DJI would spruce it up later. So far that theory has not panned out. 😀
Steve, what video editing software do you use? Do you have any videos on how to edit? I have bought a number of different software editing programs (windows) and they sit. I would really enjoy watching how it’s done. Or maybe someone you could recommend for me to follow. I need to start from beginning. Thank you for your hard work with your videos. Very good information.
Thank you. I use Final Cut Pro X, which is only available for Mac. I was a Windows guy pretty much all throughout my IT career but switched to Mac for my photography/video work and never looked back. I started doing a video editing series based on FCPX but it wasn't very popular so I moved on to other things. I am sure some searching on UA-cam will help you find the videos you need. Best of luck, cheers!
Thanks for watching and great question. I almost always use an ND or CPL (circular polarizing) filter while capturing video. You should set your white balance with the filter on. Although both ND and CPL filters should be colour neutral, some, especially cheaper ND filters can have a magenta or green colour bias, so it's always best to set WB with them installed. Cheers!
Thanks, just trying to understand my new mini 2. I tend to try it out that I activate automatic wb before shooting in the chosen environment and then lock it at the suggested value for the time of the shoot. I think thats reasonable!
Yeah, that's usually a pretty good strategy for white balance. I mostly shoot during the middle of the day so I tend to just choose 5500-6000K and leave it there. Really it's about consistent colour, something you don't get with AWB. Happy flying!
One last question: Is it about the light you as photographer are exposed in general at that place you want to should or is it about light in the specifi scene or diretion the camera should shoot or more precise: Do I need the specific "frame" or shot I wanted to shoot or can I do that already at the start if the conditions appear to be the same in the shooting place 100 m away ? I was asking myself due to re "whiting" examples you had described that you had to warm up that water and ice scene a bit and that you then could apply that specific "move" to all the footage you had. Cause that seemed to sound like stay in the same white balance as long the situation of light does not change (but question is for me in general or for the camera shooting frame right now). I guess it is the general shooting direction cause so that i can shoot with the sun in the back from the camera as long as I want but the content might get issues as soon as I turn around into the sun so that I had to readjust that once again. Just a guess if I remember that right cause I went onto a shooting after your last explanation and think that it worked that way: camera angle counts as long as light does not change in general (by clouds or other shadow) I think I changed the white balance back then when I had to do panoramic shots in a sunny condition with the sun on the back and side cause I guess I changed white balanced when I had to fly into the sun to get the right balance. But the example you explained for less work in post editing made me think if you can use 1 general white balance on 1 day in 1 location as long as the light does not change cause that would mean 1 white balance useable the whole day as condition / cast does not change regardless camera angle or amount of light. I have my Mavic Pro not here so I can not try that out and therefore this basic question I guess.
I think you summed it up perfectly at the end. You can just choose one white balance for 1 day in 1 location and you would be fine as long as you continue to shoot under the same light, regardless of what the drone is pointing at. Like I said in the video too, the most important thing is consistency. Even if your colour is not perfect, you just don't want it fluctuating because that is a nightmare to fix in post. If your footage is all shot with the same white balance setting, under relatively the same light, you could correct any colour bias with the same adjustment saving tons of time. If you're going to allow the Mini to pick the white balance, really you just want to point at a scene lit under the light you will be shooting in and the scene should have no strong colour bias. For instance, if you point your Mini at a stand of bright green trees that completely fills the frame, you will likely get a red tint as the camera tries to "balance" out the flood of green. As I demonstrated in the video with the blue card, it is easy for AWB to misjudge. Almost 100% of the time when I am shooting under sunny conditions I am shooting at 5500-6000K. I just leave it there and forget about it. During editing if I want to push the colour cooler or warmer I can knowing that all the footage for that particular day/shoot will be consistent. Cheers!
