My phone is boomer old (iPhone SE 1st Gen). After seeing this video I’m now debating with myself whether to get SE 2nd Gen or 12 Mini. Appreciate the help y’all!!
I just put down the money for the 12 Mini last night. The SE (2nd gen) was really compelling but, I've been resisting to upgrade because of the larger sizes all this time (I have the 1st gen SE). I'm going for the smaller phone, even if it comes at a hefty premium.
Entertaining, informative, refreshing comparison. Thank you for not relying on benchmarks to make your points. Since you’re such a big Ipad + magic keyboard fan, please make a video comparing that setup to the new M1 MBA (once you’ve had it for a bit). While I prefer the form factor of the MBA, I much prefer the simple iPadOS to macOS! Thanks Gary.

@@xers6704 actually design factor is subjective, another thing is the price that can't be justified by specs so honestly 12 mini is apples experiment will it succeed? and answer is no it didn't succeed it merely sold in amount of several thousands of copies ppl simply prefered to pay that more 100$ for the full size iphone 12
The 12 mini would have been hypertext upgrade from my OG SE. Sadly. I already bought the new SE when it came out and no urge to upgrade in the next few years.
In Europe the 64 GB mini costs equivalent to USD 950, add a screen protector and charging brick it's a USD 1000 phone. For me "budget" for a smartphone ends somewhere at 300 or 400 USD.
I’ve been back and forth between SE/12 mini/ 13 mini. I really prefer a fingerprint reader anytime, especially when driving or wearing a mask. I don’t have to take my eyes away from the road to unlock it. Even with CarPlay, you have to unlock the phone sometimes. In which case fingerprint is much more convenient.
In Australia, the iphone se now is $649 while the iphone 12 mini is $1.2k and an iphone 11 is $999 and I would go for the 11 as a middle ground as it has the improved camera as well as the longest battery life out of all of the phones here. Edit: if you want a budget phone get the SE, but if you want the looks and the OLED display, go for the 12 mini
Yep got my SE in March and bought it due to the price. $699 is way too much for a phone for me. If and when the mini comes down in price I’ll be interested in upgrading but the SE is still a fantastic phone for the money and is by far the better buy.
Buy it at a discount. I upgraded from a first gen SE to an iPhone mini and it feels like going from the Dark Ages to the Space Age. It's the best phone Apple has released in years.
While I'm now an Apple fan, this was a great video and I would love to taste either one of these phones in my channel. Maybe I'll have to step out of the box and actual try another iPhone. Another awesome video Sir, keep up the great video content.
Totally agree with your take on touch ID. I have two numbers so I have the SE and I've ordered the mini as well but the face ID will certainly drive me crazy,
I'm really happy you're here to put this into perspective, I have a 2020 SE and the want for the 12 mini was huge, but you're right all I'm going to get is a bigger screen and a smaller battery and it's just not worth it
I’m still using iPhone 8 (256 GB). An easy phone to repair for the phone technician. Parts are cheap to find in the market. Battery changed once. Still work brilliant and reliable. Who care if my my phone does not have the best camera, video recording, speakers, fastest chips etc. Two seconds slower doesn’t bother me although this is a 4 years old phone. My phone is small, easy to grab, cheap to repair and still going and going and going. It is like to own a Toyota Corolla. Its not fastest, not most handsome, the ride is good but not plush. Who cares as long as it is still a good car.
I moved from a 5 to an SE 2020. Only mistake was (as is always the problem) they didn’t have larger than the 64 in stock unless I wanted to drive “across hell & half of Texas” to double that volume. The plan to for apple go portless/wireless for 5G might be giving Timmy Cook “talc hard tumescence” but NO. If I had his cash and employee discount, a yearly upgrade to a pro max with maxed-out storage might be a “no-brainer” In the end, upgrading to a maxed out SE might be all that’s necessary. (Probably because $450 for a phone that lasts 2-4 years has always been good enough for me in the past.) And the previous phone becomes a great MP3 player. After all, you don’t need all the apps after you upgrade models, and by now, you’ve probably got at least 2 or 4 old sets of earphones, and several power cords/power bricks...
I love my SE 2020, I still have 5% battery till I got to bed at 11pm with my everyday use. I use my Ipad for media and games consumption anyway.....gonna keep it......
I upgraded from the SE to the iPhone 12 mini for better battery life. Price increase was a bit to stomach though... I do appreciate the better cams, OLED display, and design.
Watching this on my iPhone SE AND also wearing a Coke shirt 😂 Update: The one and only complaint I have with the SE is the battery life but everything else has been fantastic
I upgrade my iPhone 8 to the mini. I love my Mini except the Face ID, especially with a mask on. I definitely considered the SE but it was enough of a difference and I really wanted an OLED screen and blue and the cameras. I love how lightweight the Mini is.
The benefit i see with the SE is not only is it cheaper but it is compatible with the iphone 7's smart battery case so it would outlast the 12 mini with it while still being cheaper. You could always get a 3rd party battery case for the 12 mini but there's something special about it integrating perfectly with the phone
Everyday Dad, You always offer a practical perspective when other UA-camrs are hyper focused on the biggest, shiniest new toys. Thanks for looking out for the average consumer. It isn't all about benchmarks; normal people with normal jobs need normal devices with normal prices. That being said, I still prefer the 12 Mini over the SE. Even factoring in the whole mask situation, my fingers are too sweaty and Touch ID simply does not cut it for me. I like your suggestion to put both Touch and Face mechanisms on the phone. Maybe using the new iPad Air's touch sensor on the lock button? Keep making awesome content! P.S. I'm really interested to see if the M1 Macs will work for Software Development in general, such as Python.
Apple : Customers are complainig about the slow chargers we provide in box so how do we resolve it Employee : Lets Exclude that slow charger too from the box
At 3:32 you said, “the dang notch separates the pull down functions.” My Team disagrees. We have an iPad Pro and we can do the same pull down without a notch. We don’t need a physical physiological barrier for a repetitive function. For that reason my team came in with a negative for this post.
He isn’t wrong, but he didn’t give the full story. With recent iOS, if you pull down from near the upper right you get control center; if you pull down from anywhere else (including the notch) you get notifications.
Bought the 12 Mini. But selling it today and coming back to SE. I don’t know why but the Mini is so uncomfortable in hand. Was using 11 Pro and 12 too but i now feel the SE is just fine.
@@Ecmane1 3 reasons... 1. Price 2. Size 3. Mini is way too small and feels uncomfortable and 12 is quite big. SE size is perfect. And also the biggest advantage... touch ID. Face ID is non functional with masks.
"Budget" is most definitely a relative term. I wouldn't even describe the SE as a "budget" phone, especially when what you're getting is a souped up 6s/7/8! 😉😉 That said, in terms of design, I'd prefer it over anything Apple has come up with since.
Okay so for your wish of touch and Face ID to be on both iPhones, I say just use the things on the new iPad Air and keep the Face ID. The new Air has Touch ID in the power button. If they can bring that over to like next years iPhone AND still keep the Face ID it’ll be perfect
Totally agree with you on the front that everyone who is sick should wear a mask from now on! P.s.: I love your video. Still can't decide which phone to buy though!!
Have both, while I love the dual cameras on the mini and love the full screen compared to the se, but the fact that you can’t repair anything, no Touch ID, and the green/yellow tint to the mini display is horrible. My opinion? Get the se in 256 gb and don’t look back. Need a screen replacement or battery swap? Cheap af for the se as everything is swappable with a iPhone 8.
Thanks so much. A great comparison. :-) Battery life will continue to improve with newer and newer A model chips. Imagine what the A20 will be like?!! I'm looking forward to the week's battery life! One day... one day!!
"Once you get it in a case...it's amazing!" That's why form factor shouldn't matter to most people who use cases. You're not going to see the phone's shape unless you get a clear case.
Yea, I love the iPhone 12 design, but I went with the SE2020. I just needed an iPhone to operate my series 6 Apple Watch and I do not regret going with the SE.
@@hrudaynayak9855 let me help you. It changes from person to person. The SE is absolutely not for gamers, you can game at least 3-4 hours with this phone. I usually charge it up to 80% (I’ve heard it is good for the battery). It can keep up a day. What I do is texting, Whatsapp, browsing, streaming music, a little bit of UA-cam and Twitch. But you need to use apps that is energy efficient. For example: I use Snapchat for 5 minutes, the battery drains so fast it uses almost twice as much as Instagram for 30 min. If you ask about the screenbrightness, I keep it low because I have sensitive eyes.
Just an idea, it would be cool if they gave an iPhone 12 mini option where you can have a home button, but with that you get the front glass of the iPhone 8 style and a lcd not an oled and one rear camera, price it around $500.

Have an iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone SE 1st gen. The 12 Mini is truly in another league of technology comparing them. It’s the phone we’ve been asking for. Next best is the SE 1st gen based on its classic design. Last is SE 2020, it’s a great phone, its just too in the middle of the road and doesn’t elicit the same excitement as the other 2 devices.
I’ve always been a iPhone user. About 2 1/2 years ago the public was getting rumors about new retro design of the 5. At that time it would possibly happen. It turns out the SE 2020 still had the rounded edges. ( Im not a big fan of holding wet soap as my phone) A week purchasing the SE 2020. The 12 phones were released. They had the squared design I was looking for in the old 5’s. Anyway way I now own the SE 2020 , I’m thinking of holding out for the iPhone 13. That’s crazy right, because I’ve been waiting for the design of the new 12’s for years now, but now it makes sense to have touch, rather than face recognition or both.
I traded in my 12 mini for the SE. I still use my jet black iPhone on WiFi at house so that gives me a hardware comparison for the SE. I’m not picky if the SE is a little less advanced compared to the mini. I love the way the 7 feels in hand compared to the mini.
want to save money? buy the max memory and just change the battery when the time comes. ive been using my iphone 6s for 6 years. still no memory problems (and i do work from the phone) and when the battery started having problems.. i just changed it ($50) in us instead of buying a new phone.
It really depends on which kinda phone user you are. Like me ...I don’t play games with my phone and stuff like that. I also don’t use Facebook/ UA-cam or insta that much. Really less.... so battery sometimes lasts for 2 days and I’m always try to charge just between 30/80% battery level. Also I love the Home Button 😅... especially in this time, when you pay with it. Personal Conclusion... I’ve never had an iPhone before SE 2020, always Android. I just love that performance and everything is build up on iOS... So if you are a basic phone user, and want some high quality for less money ...best desicion you can make with a SE 2020
I've been saving money from Jan 2020 just for ip12, then mini one got my attention. But the spec tho, I'm waiting for 120hz and in-display touch id, this video clears me out that I should get iPhone SE 2020 at least for now.
Cricket wireless just had a deal, if you port your number over to cricket you can get an iPhone SE for $50. I got 2 iPhone SEs and first month of service for cricket for $200
I think this needs to be said. The 12 mini is not a budget phone. It's simply a smaller iPhone 12 and Apple are marketing it as a small flagship (which it is because of its internal specs). The tag of "budget phone" is very misleading. I say this because I bought it.
Very honest, tho he could have mentioned that the SE comes with charging brick, headphones, and cable, and also doesn’t have $30 extra to buy unlocked. iPhone 12 cost $30 more unlocked, without headphones and charging brick.

iPhone 8 seems to have the same or more resale value from what I've seen. Possibly only for trade-in value.
It’s exactly the same phone except for the processor

Upgraded from the se2020 and could not be happier 😃 they came out with a update with mask unlocking? Locking all the 12 mini videos love my 12 mini
My phone is boomer old (iPhone SE 1st Gen).
After seeing this video I’m now debating with myself whether to get SE 2nd Gen or 12 Mini.
Appreciate the help y’all!!
I have 2 phones. SE gen 1 and 12mini. Get the mini
I just upgraded from the se 2020 to the 12 mini today. I was going to go with the 2022 se but for $70 more I went modern. Hope I don’t miss the home button too much. Great vid
Better screen
Better camera
Better chipset
5g compatibility
Even smaller body

better battery life, better design, almost bezelless with george Jefferson hairline at the top
Wait until the pandemic's over and you have to rely on the SE's battery, then let us know what you think about it.
2:41 the difference in screen quality is massive.
Some people might say oled isn’t important, but to me i gotta have.
Thanks! I think phones are pretty boring overall so I like to see when budget phones get really good.
Totally agree with your take on touch ID. I have two numbers so I have the SE and I've ordered the mini as well but the face ID will certainly drive me crazy,
I'm really happy you're here to put this into perspective, I have a 2020 SE and the want for the 12 mini was huge, but you're right all I'm going to get is a bigger screen and a smaller battery and it's just not worth it
Watching this on my iPhone Se 2. I'm Proud of it.
Exe Fx me too
I’m still using iPhone 8 (256 GB).
Lol , I’m still using my iPhone SE 2016 from 2017
Me 2
I moved from a 5 to an SE 2020.
If I had his cash and employee discount, a yearly upgrade to a pro max with maxed-out storage might be a “no-brainer”
In the end, upgrading to a maxed out SE might be all that’s necessary.
Oh me me!
@@todddiesen2647 So, you like the SE 2020?
@@victorcapote7376 it’s been good, and I’ll keep the 20, just need to upgrade to one with 256 gb storage option

Amazingly useful review and comparison. Thank you!! Well done as always.
Watching this on my iPhone SE AND also wearing a Coke shirt 😂
Update: The one and only complaint I have with the SE is the battery life but everything else has been fantastic
$700 is budget?
_/is dead_
400$

Sooo
700$
Is not budget
“Budget” when talking about phones is ~400USD Barr minimum. Phones below that price are almost always not worth it.
I upgrade my iPhone 8 to the mini. I love my Mini except the Face ID, especially with a mask on. I definitely considered the SE but it was enough of a difference and I really wanted an OLED screen and blue and the cameras. I love how lightweight the Mini is.
When you said “how cool is that” it quickly reminds me of Craig Federighi saying it when he opened the MacBook lid.
The benefit i see with the SE is not only is it cheaper but it is compatible with the iphone 7's smart battery case so it would outlast the 12 mini with it while still being cheaper. You could always get a 3rd party battery case for the 12 mini but there's something special about it integrating perfectly with the phone
I am in love seeing this channel grow!
Shut up
Everyday Dad,
You always offer a practical perspective when other UA-camrs are hyper focused on the biggest, shiniest new toys.
Apple : Customers are complainig about the slow chargers we provide in box so how do we resolve it
Employee : Lets Exclude that slow charger too from the box
At 3:32 you said, “the dang notch separates the pull down functions.” My Team disagrees. We have an iPad Pro and we can do the same pull down without a notch. We don’t need a physical physiological barrier for a repetitive function. For that reason my team came in with a negative for this post.
He isn’t wrong, but he didn’t give the full story. With recent iOS, if you pull down from near the upper right you get control center; if you pull down from anywhere else (including the notch) you get notifications.
@@Sashazur dear dr. Sash: my team stands by my dang team’s point. This was a massive barrier for my dang team.
Went from the 11 pro to the 12 mini 128gb and love it was what I wanted since the first SE
Bought the 12 Mini. But selling it today and coming back to SE. I don’t know why but the Mini is so uncomfortable in hand. Was using 11 Pro and 12 too but i now feel the SE is just fine.
That doesn’t make any sense bro who would pick the SE over the iPhone pro or 12
@@Ecmane1 3 reasons...
1. Price
2. Size
That said, in terms of design, I'd prefer it over anything Apple has come up with since.
SE is Budget phone for Apple. And still one of the best phones out there in its price range.
Okay so for your wish of touch and Face ID to be on both iPhones, I say just use the things on the new iPad Air and keep the Face ID. The new Air has Touch ID in the power button. If they can bring that over to like next years iPhone AND still keep the Face ID it’ll be perfect
It's impossible to have a bad review about these 2 phones

One day... one day!!
Someday in the future, I hope we see it sooner rather than later.
THANKS FOR FINDING OUT
"Once you get it in a case...it's amazing!" That's why form factor shouldn't matter to most people who use cases. You're not going to see the phone's shape unless you get a clear case.
Was thinking the same thing. I was wondering what he was talking about since the case covers the bezels…
Yea, I love the iPhone 12 design, but I went with the SE2020. I just needed an iPhone to operate my series 6 Apple Watch and I do not regret going with the SE.
I have a iPhone 8 and for some reason I be swiping down to open the control center like I have a iPhone 12 😂😂

Great Video, I have the SE 2020 and it's amazing. Its perfect. Thank you for your honesty
What about its battery life??can you please tell me
@@hrudaynayak9855 let me help you.
The iPhone mini is an iPhone 12, your suggestion is contradicting to what the phone actually is.
I really enjoy your posts! 👍🏻
Thanks!

"Enjoy Coke" ... Alright !!!
Very watchable, and great info. Thank you!
in my country I found a store that offered both phones with just a difference of $100 lol so I bought the 12 mini and i’m soooo happy w it :)
I’ve owned a 5s, 2016 SE, and 2020 se. 7 years of satisfaction and counting
I traded in my 12 mini for the SE. I still use my jet black iPhone on WiFi at house so that gives me a hardware comparison for the SE. I’m not picky if the SE is a little less advanced compared to the mini. I love the way the 7 feels in hand compared to the mini.
The speakers look smaller on the mini than the SE when you held them up. I'm wondering if music sounds better or louder on the SE than the mini.
want to save money? buy the max memory and just change the battery when the time comes. ive been using my iphone 6s for 6 years. still no memory problems (and i do work from the phone) and when the battery started having problems.. i just changed it ($50) in us instead of buying a new phone.
Nice video. Its haunting that some of you guys have that many notifications.
Re: The grocery list... I just set the display to never auto-lock before I go in the store. Then I set it back to 3 minutes when I’m done.
Wait for 13 for on-screen fingerprint scanner. Face ID is a pain in the arse especially when you wear masks.

Epic clash but subtle transition love it 😀
I've been saving money from Jan 2020 just for ip12, then mini one got my attention.
