My older brothers had the Moody Blues albums and in the late 70's I got a hold of them. They were the 1st concert I went to. I have seen the Kinks the Stones the Who Pink Floyd Deep Purple and so many others including Stevie Ray Vaughn. I feel blessed to have lived these years.

I think you mean their second through eighth, given that _The Magnificent Moodies_ was actually their first album, where they were still very much in the R&B vein with future Wings member Denny Laine being on guitar and primary vocals and Clint Warwick on bass.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for "Legend of a Mind." I had just installed my first car stereo in my 1967 Mustang, the year was 1978, I was 16, and I turned it on to the AOR station. Also keeping in mind they had only 8 tracks of analog tape to record all the parts on to, and then mixed down to stereo. The studio and reverb themselves both playing a major presence and atmospheric role in the recording sessions as well as in the final result. You just simply cannot achieve that with modern digital gear and the sterile, claustrophobic studios so commonly used today.

@Bookhouse Boy You are absolutely correct, in fact the ELP 1977 Works Orchestral Tour was so epic in scope and size that despite sold out venues every night, the band lost money and had to abandon the concept on subsequent tours. My premise is somewhat jaded by the fact I saw the MB up close with the orchestra. And btw, overall, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer IS my favorite band :)

I was 18 when Lost Chord came out, I had heard Tuesday Afternoon and Nights in White Satin before, so I bought it.
Absolutely over the years it has become my favorite Moodies album.
But back to that time - I was entering college, 1968 was a tumultuous and sad year in the country, and music was getting more & more creative and expressive.
I anxiously awaited their next release, then in 1969, Threshold came out - another great one with another great cover.
And they continued to release great albums through Seventh Sojourn- the magnificent 7, starting with Days of Future Past.
Saw them 5 times in their prime, every show fantastic.

This is a great album by a fantastic band. I am delighted you are doing this! The song that best express this on the album is Om. The band had a personal connection with Timothy Leary. They were friends. Dr. Leary led quite a life if you dig into it. Harvard professor who conducted experiments with students with psilocybin, most famously on Good Friday. He was telling the youth of America to ‘turn on, tune in and drop out (of the game). He ultimately became a fugitive of the law and fled the country. (The song on Seventh Sojourn- When You’re A Free Man Again is about him.) Not gonna lie... this band and this album along with Threshold of a Dream were what some friends and I first listened to when we took Leary’s advice and tied acid. Incredible experience.

This is my favorite Moodies album. I was in grade school when this came out, didn't hear it until many years later. I wish I'd been old enough to go on that search back in the day. Their albums were full of meaning back then, after they made their acclaimed 7 albums they took a break for a few years, recorded solo albums then reconvened but it wasn't the same. That spirituality was pretty much gone, eventually they just stuck to writing pop songs. Too bad.
There's something noble about that quest for self, for answers, fundamental truths, opening the mind up. That time is gone.

I might put a few of the lyrics in my time travel story, imagine walking onto the bridge of a time ship with the time traveler that answered an invitation you sent. He opens the door and "Ride, take a free ride,
Take my place, Have my seat, It's for free" is playing.
It also reminds me of listening to Art Bell back in the 90's. (Ride, take a free ride,
Take my place, Have my seat, It's for free then the announcer would go, "wanna take a ride? Call Art Bell").

Leary was a big fan of LSD. The reference to being “dead” comes from the LSD experience: most who take the hallucinogenic drug go through a “trip” where they see their lives from the outside of their own ego, you sit in judgement of yourself. Many people reported feeling like they died and were reborn with a new perspective on life. Of course, lots of people also had horrible LSD experiences, known as a “bad trip”. The guys in the Moody Blues have talked about their LSD trips and how it changed their music. The same with the Beatles. Actually, marijuana and LSD played maybe the biggest part in how radically rock music changed in the 60’s.

I actually met Timothy Leary in the mid-eighties in Santa Clara at a Commodore Amiga convention. He had written a program for Electronic Arts called Mind Mirror that was used on the Commodore 64 and then the Amiga. He was totally against synthetic drugs but still had a soft spot for shrooms, etc. Personally, I was never into the drug scene, but this album opened my mind as a second year college student and everything fell into place for me after that.

Ohhh boy! Your 'search' continues! This is the Moodies at their psychedelic best - and yes, I am sure certain 'substances' were involved (namely LSD & marijuana).
This album was their response to Days Of Future Passed in that they found playing much of that album live was difficult or impossible without orchestral accompaniment, so they stripped down their sound to what the 5 of them could create. Further sonic experiments with the mellotron, courtesy of Mike Pinder, expanded the sounds they could make. Ray Thomas is featured prominently with his flute. And I could see you picked up on their stereo panning! This album is a 'head-space' album for sure.
They were poetic, they were melodic, they were psychedelic, they were Moody! Can't wait for part 2!
Just wait until Threshold Of A Dream & To Our Children's Children's Children albums! I love these guys!

  • @jeffmartin1026

For me "Timothy Leary's dead" refers to his teaching/research aspect of his life is over, "He's outside (of society/structure) looking in". "Outside the last door" reflects accepting that here is no one/ nowhere to find what you are looking for, that it comes from within. They both also relate to the idea that although using psychadelics can expose you to spiritual insites, the drug itself is not the insight. The house/experience is no longer needed once the light in your heart is awakened.

  • @JohnRodriguesPhotographer

Mixing will change what you perceive. Never let an old drummer mix for your band! Their ears are shot and they tune too much highs. Protect your hearing! I am 63 and despite spending 16 years in mainframe operations, still have good hearing. My left ear is weaker though. Cruising with window down has a price. :-)

Days of Future Passed had orchestra segments that transitioned between songs creating a continuous flow of sound without distinct breaks. They continued that practice on future albums but just by having the mix overlap songs by fading out. In a few cases it wasn't a good idea because some songs are more effective with a dramatic ended. It works well on this album. Listening to the Moodies albums in the late 60's and early 70's while stoned was a cosmic experience. 😁

I saw the Moodies in 1995 I think.. it was the 25th anniversary tour of Days of Future Passed. But this album brings back much deeper times then that. I knew of and loved the Moodies since the late 60's. Go Now.. was the first song I heard by them. But I didnt get into album music until I lived with a lady named Teddy. She had a great album collection, a brother in a band, and weed... She was always into learning and teaching.. and this album was one of her first 'lessons' to me... I remember sitting between the speakers in the front room with a rolling tray in front of me sitting on the table that used to be a huge wire spool... She had this poster about the doorway going out that was called , 'building a rainbow'... a real hippy chick... She was the first girl I lived with. It was life changing...
