There's nothing like the first time. Cowboys first title, boy was it ever a long time coming! As the great Facenda said, "In the end, the long hard road, had made the final destination.......all the sweeter." Beautiful.
Wow! What a sweet victory that must have been for Tom Landry after losing 12 years. The music in this was absolutely phenomenal and amazing! Made it seem like a movie.
Craig Morton had been 16-41 for 166 yards, 1 TD, 7 INTs, 4 sacks for a loss of 34 yards, and ratings of 34.1 and 0.0 in Super Bowls V and XII losses. Meanwhile, Staubach was 61-98 for 734 yards, 8 TDs, 4 INTs, 1 fumble lost, 19 sacks for a loss of 148 yards, and ratings of 115.9 (win), 77.8 (loss), 102.6 (win), and 100.4 (loss). Staubach always felt he should have started SB V. He was probably the difference if he would have played in SB V.
To be completely fair, Morton's arm was in intense pain for the last month of the 1970 season, and in Super Bowl XII, the Bronco offensive line was in way over their heads against the Cowboy defensive line. The Doomsday Defense peaked during the playoffs and would have been a nightmare for Stabler, Bradshaw, Griese, Fouts, Anderson, etc. They were spilling into Morton's lap from the very first series of the game, just like the Steelers were chasing Tarkenton all over the field in Super Bowl IX. Staubach even admitted the two teams could have switched quarterbacks and Dallas would still have won, given how ferocious the Cowboys were on the defensive side of the ball.
"Five consecutive division championships. Five consecutive failures. They were labeled losers. A team with a roman appetite for victory, without the spartan will to sacrifice for it." THAT'S F*CKING POETRY!
Prime time in the evenings is where the money and the ratings are. Fans fail to realize the NFL and the TV networks are in the business of what was mentioned above.
I was a senior in H.S. in ‘72, I remember thinking back then how Dallas was going to win easily. Miami was a good, up-and-coming team, but they were considered lucky to be there. Dallas was on a roll and their defense was just dominating. I was rooting for Miami and was disappointed they got beaten so badly. Little did I realize then that this was not an ending - this was the beginning of their dynasty. It was awesome, I was living in Miami in those days.
Dolphins made good on their next two chances In fact, the Fins didn't lose another game, period, until September of 1973 (19 straight wins including postseason).
27-2 and back-to-back Super Bowl Titles after this game. An incredible run. Almost went to a 4th consecutive Super Bowl but the Sea of Hands play beat them in the ‘74 Divisional Playoff. One of the great games of all-time. This was some spark, this game. Really started two dynasties.
13:39 great music starts. Don't know the name of the piece. But it fits in very well as Dallas seizes full control of the game with an overpowering running game coming from unexpected directions and multiple sources. Miami is overwhelmed on that first drive of the second half, and that uplifting music just keeps playing right along. And of course, Facenda: "The second half opened with tactical maneuvers on both sides. Shula and Buoniconti discussed means to seal the middle............. while Landry planned counter-action. Miami sensed the importance of this first series: Hold or be swallowed up. Buoniconti rooted in.....and tackle Manny Fernandez stacked over center. .....The shocked Dolphins watched Dallas fly OUTSIDE" (great music continues) Facenda: "Seventy one yards in eight plays. Seven of them sweeps. And the stunned Dolphins were suddenly down 17-3." 14:49 The once proud No Name Defense in full bedraggled retreat, dazed and confused.
After stumbling to a 4-3 record, that perfect 10-week win streak saw Dallas playing as well as almost any NFL champion. The loss to the Bears seemed to purge the Cowboys of all the drama and self-doubt, an attitude of "Enough is enough!"
Dallas a then Super Bowl record 252 yards rushing. Dominating. This is still fourth best ALL TIME to this day for a Super Bowl. 22:09 Even Mike Ditka 89 got to carry the ball once. He had a huge escort and roared for 17 yards down the sideline before getting knocked out of bounds one foot short of the goal line. The supposedly unemotional Landry got quite excited during that run ha ha.
'... every time he goes up in the air, he loses the ball!! Stay on your feet Calvin!' Yes, Calvin Hill needed to stay on his feet. If he had, the game would have been 31 to 3. He has lived that one over in his head innumerable times. Ditka could have scored two touchdowns if he had leapt forward in the air an pushed the ball forward to break the plane.
The loudmouth Dolphins were silenced by the Cowboys and Dominated so thoroughly they were nearly shut out. Yepremian's FG barely made it through the uprights to avoid being the 1st team to be shutout in Super Bowl.
this is considered to be one of the worst super bowls, if not the worst ever, but NFL films could make a mismatch clunker like this into the most dramatic struggle of all time. these are not highlight films, these are art films
This was great Super Bowl, Dallas doing what only Steelers nearly did, Miami was nearly shutout by Doomsday Defense. You're thinking of the Super Bowl V where Dallas was robbed on controversial call and sloppy game with turnovers
The Dolphins never played the Packers, Browns or Colts during the prime years of those teams. Had Dallas been in the AFC, it would not have taken 6 tries.
But if the Chiefs make that FG and beat Miami, they could have beaten the Colts and given the Cowboys a much tougher game in the S.B. Maybe even win it - they were that good in 1971.
The Chiefs had home field through the AFC playoffs and lost Miami had home field for the AFC title game because they were the WC and beat Cleveland otherwise Miami would have been the road team again for the AFC title game

In that same game in the 4th quarter, what if the Cowboys didn't get that controversial pass interence call or Randy White didn't fumble the kickoff? Love the clips of Thomas, Garrison, and Hill running with the ball, running with balls, all of it.
The Cowboys went to the Superbowl 5 times in the 70s! Wow! They dominated the NFC for half the decade!

No he wouldn’t, he was terrible at that point and Landry had no faith in him.
I still remember loving that game. That was the team that made me a lifelong Cowboys fan....
Was 39 degrees at kickoff, the coldest ever for a Super Bowl.

Small consolation, perhaps...but when the game is played on the West Coast, at least the first half is in daylight. It's something.

Opening song is "The Bonnie Blue Flag" which is something I never thought I'd hear in a football highlight film.
But the theme song was called “The Generals of Autumn” by the legendary Sam Spence.
20:10 - John Facenda's voice is legendary but some of NFL Films' best work comes from the natural sounds of the game.
I vividly remember waiting for the Super Bowl highlights rrom NFLFims . It was must see TV. Facenda was perfect.

After 238 plays Larry Csonka would fumble in the Super Bowl 😫

Yes. 6x All-Pro. 5x Pro Bowl. 1x SB MVP (frankly, he could have been SB MVP in SB VI also).
