I can't remember how I stumbled across this exactly but it inspired me to upgrade my Dell optiplex 745 which used a 3.0ghz Pentium D which DID NOT support virtualization as I also needed it for emulation. Since watching this I upgraded to a Q6600 and I have seen people have success as far as the Q6700 AND ALSO Q6800! I haven't tried either of them but I will in the future for fun. I learned a lot watching this. Thanks buddy
This is a very clear video to follow. I've never come across a video that explains a processor upgrade in such detail. If there is one thing I didn't like, it was the overuse of thermal paste. You didb't need anything like that much. Thank you for a great tutorial!
I got a free Dell Optiplex 380 sff from my work with 2gb of DDR3 ram and a Core 2duo 7500. It had a dead HD so I bought a new WD 1tb had for about $53 can. from CC. Since I upgraded to Win 10 on my desktop I couldnt play all my old games. The Dell will be my Win 7 old game pc. So far I updated the bios and all the drivers and Im now looking to increase the ram to 8gb and add a video card soon so far its running great. This cheap pc's are great to play around with and upgrade cheaply.
Nice work with this computer, have you maked many upgrades since you have found it in trash. May i ask how much money have did you spent with this computer and even what is the difference between how it was warking in past, when have you first time found it, and how it works now? I'm sorry if my grammar it is not very good, this is not my mother language...
It's definitely starting to add up but I like doing the upgrades too. I just looked back at what I have spent so far, $53 for a 1TB HD, $30 for the EVGA Geforce 210 video card, I don't remember what I spent on Win 7 64 bit but I see it is going for around $30 on Ebay. I bought mine on Ebay too, $5 for the recent 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 . That's about $143 that I put into it so far. It's like when someone gives you a free fish tank and before you know it you have spent a lot of money on fish and equipment. It looks like you can get a similar refurbished dell optiplex for around $169 plus shipping on Ebay right now but where is the fun in that. I just received an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 SLACQ 2.66GHZ 8M Socket 775 Quad Core CPU Processor from Ebay that I want to try and that was $23. This processor has 8MB cache compared to the 4MB on the current E6600 that I just installed. I guess I'll stop after this processor.
Thank you for your answer, I have owned an intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 it would be a super upgrade for your pc, I think it is still good today and it will make the job. I am waiting more projects with arduino that i will love to try :) Have a good day.
eTech Tom I have the exact same computer and the Q6700 you mentioned is actually the best cpu that this motherboard can take. I did a lot of research to figure this out. Just got one from eBay myself.

does the thermal compund go directly onto the top of the new cpu chip, or rather, doesn't the thermal compound go on top of the clear plastic heat spreader lid that holds the cpu chip in place? Then the thermal compound will be directly in contact with the heat sink? thanks

way too much thermal compound , all you need is a dot about the size of a grain of rice in the middle of the chip and put the heat sink back on , too much wont help cooling in the least

It is a 745 SFF NOT an USFF.(Ultra Small Form Factor) ,the USFF does not have any expansion slots for a graphics card, and only 2 memory card slots.

As somebody already posted a bios upgrade may sort your problems if the CPU is supported . Minor point I would have removed the fan and clean it.

You need to connect metal to metal (CPU to heatsink). You must remove the plastic cover.
