I saw him play in Brisbane back in the early 2000's , l cried. No one could play the Rach 3 without knowing the extrodinary lengths of human emotions both good and bad. I was so happy as a student of music -piano/cello that l had the honour to hear him play. Even these words cant express the beauty of the Rach 3 by David Helgott.
Absolutely beautiful! I love David’s Rach 3. He’s an extraordinary man. Hubby & I met him in 1997 (Detroit). We gave him 2 Monarch chrysalides that would emerge soon. Gillian invited us backstage; David was thrilled with the butterflies. He kept hugging & kissing me in his own sweet way. It was a lovely evening with the Helfgotts.
Far away from Helfgott, purists, who for seeking perfection, you miss this wonder, this being that dragged an existence with incredible nightmare passages, and here, showing besides undeniable virtuosity, gives us sensitivity, and passion unleashed, in a show that he forces me to say that the miraculous is possible, Helfgott is for music lovers, not for critics imprisoned by his stylistic dogmas, this being touched by the gods of Olympus, we are fortunate to be his happy contemporaries, I cried when watching the movie Shine, and only many years later I have been able to hear the master through youtube, and I do not stop getting excited, to surprise me more and more, not in vain his last name is Gott, in a clear sample of the musical heights that only he has reached, thanks master David Helfgott
I watched this movie years ago, the agonizing experience David went through learning to play this particular song to the bitter disappointment of his father that wanted him to excel as a violinist only inspires me to listen to this song often. What a Masterpiece!
I'm just an intermediate pianist and don't have a ton of knowledge. But my feeling is that he shows surprising and deep feeling in the slower parts, but as some people have pointed out perhaps, in the faster parts, while this fingers seem to have no problem moving quickly enough, they are not moving in time with the orchestra. So for me it's a bit difficult to listen to. But if I take into account what I believe were his years of incarceration in mental hospitals, perhaps numerous electric treatments, and profound depression and anxiety, it would seem that his accomplishment is quite amazing. And I can't help but think that with a healthier upbringing he would have been a quantum leap greater. His situation also brings to mind a pianist I heard once who apparently had gone to an excellent music school, but was just recovering from severe depression. He played a huge corpus of virtuoso music by heart in a recital, but unfortunately there was little feeling in it. I couldn't help but think that this was a symptom of his illness. And so, we understand, and we applaud their triumph over themselves.
more detailed the fact that everyone is built with their existence, each one lives and feels that his experience shows, I just think that is beautiful and sublime in the soul perspective beyond
He may not represent Rach's 3rd the way many would like but no one can mistake that it's Helfgott playing... It's is his own expression and insight into his own brilliance. He's certainly not playing it just because he can... His mind is so different from other performers and it's a treasure to have insight into it.

Sublime concert! Un génie fait homme, il vit si intensément sa musique, ça transporte.....Bravo!
The first time I listend this piece was in the Shine Film... I felt in love... after this I listen the interpretation of Rachmaninov. Better. Stand Up Applauses. For Both
I really like Sergei's own performance... you can almost hear his eyes go wide at certain strokes. But I like this version too... and David Helfgott's story is just so cool, and that story oozes through his interpretations. I guess he's a living example of "put yourself in the music"
My family and I have had the honour of seeing him playing at the Mundaring Weir Hotel up in the hills outside of Perth for many years. I gather he is no longer playing up there anymore , so dont know what his itenary is anymore. Brilliant pianist with a tragic upbringing.
This is his interpretation. I can like it or dislike it, that doesn't make it good or bad music. Each one of us has his opinion. Art is subjective, like everything in the world.
The simple fact is that we as human beings have accepted that which separates us from being what is human, the difference of us than the animals of which we have descend from.
I had never heard of him before, classical not really my thing but just watched the film about him and am now hooked, where do I go from here!! I ask myself, thanks David so much.
Geoffrey Rush playing David Helfgott was divine inspiration - phenomenal. tragedy / triumph played out and set to beautiful soundtrack of classic piano concertos etudes and symphonies. Armin Mueller-Stahl should.have won the Best Supporting Actor oscar - instead it went to Cuba Gooding, Jr. Nearly inexcusable blunder. Mueller-Stahl's Peter is sosososososososososo good. Difficult part.
I am a bit unusual, in that I can actually play Rach 3, but NEVER good enough or clear enough to perform. I hear multiple interpretations of this work by different pianists. I think that David is somewhat more impulsive and difficult for the conductor to follow. But I would never criticize him for that. It is his personality shining through. I always enjoy listening to David, because of the immense clarity of his passagework and his unpredictability. There's nothing wrong with either, and I wish I could play as well as he does. @ClassicalMusicPL I'm glad to see that there are others who think like me! I tried listening for a few minutes, but I just can't stand the way Helfgott plays. He doesn't seem to put any thought into his interpretation.
Fabuleuse interprétation !!! David run a little beat after l'expo du thème but it's normal.. It's David ! He want to give his mood but the conductor reste mollasson. After, it's perfect with the tempo. Gracias para este fragmento.
@Robangledorf well said. i love shameless pop & also obsure hard techno & grindcore etc. i think some people need to belong to a particular genre to feel something, whereas perhaps people like you & me just appreciate music!!!! cheers.
@fierydog Gilels was one of the best, I think, who was playing Rachmaninov, at least I reflect on his interpretation much more than on anyone's else, especially the prelude N 25. Richter's biography is written by Bruno Monsaingeon, inspired me a lot. He talks a bit about Gilels too, very interesting to read it and to understand some things about the world and people's attitudes.
Grande David Helfgott!
agree, I think the only way to understand, is getting involved in the context and environment as everything is subjective, reality is only a perception, I feel like that first, long before thinking, greetings.
I've been classical fan for many years and have enjoyed David Helfgott's version over others. Why? His emotion and soul. His first measures of the piece draws me into the music like no other. Another favorite is Olga Kern interpretation of the piece. They may not be technically correct, but music is much more than that. It's like saying Kenny J. knows the soul of jazz compared to Miles Davis or John Coltrane. Those are my thoughts and hope I don't offend the many Kenny J. fans out there. : ^ )
@Lukecash12 ur right,,, i think.. in this performance he plays very well. but theres a vid on utube where it talks about it.. i think its the octagon one.haha there it is to the right

@fierydog I agree, indeed not the strongest performance, however we are always passionate to judge. I still admire Helfgotts, he is a very extraordinary personality and pianist. However only because of that movie I fall in love with Rach.3! Although in some others interpretation. Somehow, it feels (especially after reading the biography of RIchter) that the epoch of greatest interpreters is almost gone. Nowadays it is different, not same brilliant. And we don't have same brilliant composers either
Absolutely fantastic. "Shine" is also a great movie !!!
spectacular film, loved it
This has 21 dislikes - how on this earth can anyone give this genius and beautiful piece a dislike? People are so strange!
yes they are strange!, its unbelevieble

awesome ! brilliant ! the film about him is also great !! one of the best musicians of all times. One of the most difficult melodies to play .

A long history is behind this concert by David Helfgott
Absolutely, his father aspired him to be a violinist, but David chose piano instead.
The movie Shine says it all. 🎹😎

to say that this music is pure genius is an understatement,as this creation for piano and orchestra is music of the Gods!
Sabah sabah inanılmaz iyi geliyor...So good!

Shine gave a perfect introduction to rachmaninoff.
I'm glad he has a piano to vent all his energy through.

una musica che fa provare 1000 emozioni e sensazioni
Una maravilla para los oídos.
currently there are 16 people in this world that don0t know how to appreciate a piece of great music such as this. too bad for them
Pure Genius...
He is touched by God.
@@katederrick7799 What he has achieved, he has done so by his own. No ''divine intervention'' was involved.
I think Helfgott, like Rachmaninoff, walked an extraordinarily wonderful, terrible, beautiful, tortured line between genius and madness.
just beautiful

la mejor version que escuche
