Hey Shaun, what's the blue light over your right shoulder at various points of the video. Example: @15:32-minute point, but it happens many other times. It kind of looks either like a cop light or possibly welding.
You should try planting trees in a hole that you’ve placed cactus pads in. Even if you have to chop them up. That’s the way they do it in other places that are desert.
Nitto's definitely a good choice. The G3s are good all year around and ok in the snow but they will wear quicker. I went with the Nitto Ridge Grapplers on my 4runner and have been very pleased with them. Quiet, good traction, good wear and look good too 👌

Hello Shaun, this is my first and probably only comment on youtube. I am a embedded programmer that enjoy woodworking, fishing, cooking and beer brewing. I am an atheist and obviously you value your church. I am from Scandinavia, my wife is Persian. We are very different men, with very different lives with different experiences. But I just wanted to tell you that I have wanted to do what do what you do for a long time, here where i live, maybe one day i can turn a spruce plantation into a forest. I admire what you do, a man is his actions. In the words of my ancestors. Cattle and kin, all things die. so you shall pass. only one thing lives forever, judgement of a dead man. I have always enjoyed his videos. He is a good storyteller and seems to be on a totally futile mission. However he has a sort of "sticktoitness" and somehow makes me believe he might even succeed. I'm rooting for him...hope it rains there soon!
One of my favorite things about this channel is how this permaculture nerd bought desert land because he was inspired by youtube videos and now I'm watching and getting inspired by his videos. I'm looking at land out in the arid eastern WA now, best believe I'm taking notes from these videos. Cheers brother 👍
I've been fantasizing about purchasing land uphill from Dustups. Start at the top, work your way down...But I'm not confident about the process of purchasing land, and I'm not ready to move my family to Texas from Minnesota. O.O
Even though the bathtubs didn't quite pan out, it would be nice if you did a few quick updates from time to time, for those of us who have followed from the beginning. Especially if you can give the few bathtubs that sprouted sorghum a little love and sprinkle a bit extra compost (and maybe a plant or two for company/competition) to see what you might coax out of these hardy survivors that remain. Keep up the great work! 👍
My parents own a farm in a similar climatic area and we are currently facing one of the worst most protracted drought cycles. I try to help as much as I can with what I learn from channels like Shaun's. Keep doing what you are doing bud. You are an inspiration

Shaun, I think if you put a three strand barbed wire fence around that place or just a portion of it and let it sit for a period of time you would be surprised at what you did not have to do to re-wild it. Those roaming cattle make a huge difference And the land will never catch up. But with just three strands of barbed wire , that will stop a lot of that and give the foliage and land a rest that it has not had probably in 100 years. Just an idea. Then you might be able to jump several steps in your regeneration efforts. All the best
Hello my friend. Your channel is very cool. I suffer from anxiety and depression and your videos help me calm down and travel in your project and dream of seeing a forest growing in the desert. Hold on, congratulations.
your comment of how being away makes you a better husband and father- I definitely felt the same way when I was in the Military. Instead of time away being an excuse to be rotten- it’s an opportunity to be present when you are home. grateful for time and an appreciation for its true value.
Be mindful of the issues your family have to face without you. As a defence wife with an absent significant other- it was excessively stressful. Some means of contact would be very reassurring.
I liked your channel before this episode and now I have so so much more respect for you Sir! Thank you for your honesty and what you’re doing. Great respect to you and your family.
Considered hitting somebody up who makes cold brew for coffee grounds, even if its only 10lbs at a time on a trip out. set it up above where you want it to go and let the wind and gravity put it in the right places... tiny obviously compared to the scope of your project, but also a tiny effort and where there is no soil a all it can make a difference in building your soil. If I came out for a day I would definitely ask the coffee shop for grounds on my way!
Really like the idea of working with the wind, instead of doing all that shoveling! And much less aggravating for respiratory issues than dusty manure. Sprinkling a few pounds here and there so it disperses also means composting isn't as critical.

As an idea for an episode, it would be great if you could show us all the important native plants that are already out there, perhaps with a short portrait of each plant.
Thanks for being open about your addiction, that takes so much strength to open up like that to strangers. I’m so glad to hear about your faith also, you are doing great work
I may have commented here before or not, but I have been here since the beginning. I have enjoyed your videos and your persistence in them. Learning can be a hard thing to show and it opens you up to critics. Hats off to you Shaun and for all you have put into this endeavor. You, the land, I, and probably many other viewers are better for it. Thank you, sir, respect.
Ur thoughts on efficiency are spot on for me. I can get lost thinking about the perfect way to solve a problem and get absolutely nothing done. Something I have been working on is to just do it. Don’t worry about perfection/efficiency, get something done! I plan on visiting the ranch sometime. Would like to help out! Keep up the good work bro
Around 15:18 in the video, there's a flashing glint off of what I assume is a vehicle window in the distance over your right shoulder. It happens several times. Either that or someone is signaling with a mirror. Anyway, it's a small detail that I noticed and am wondering what is back there.
We got a million animations this time...I love it! (We even got the animator's shadow) You guys kill it every time! Keep them coming....They're my favorite part of the show! Stay awesome, Jeff
Blessings Shaun! I too have a high-desert property that I love and will be developing. I appreciate your channel and am forever inspired by your efforts as well. I'm grateful you connected with Cerro Gordo! There's a great few of us in this desert community! Continued greatness and strength in your Dustups adventures! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Again, many blessings from afar...
Its so odd. I turn on your video and the music comes on... and my whole body just relaxes. Like I've turned all my worries off to just enjoy the work, heat, sweat, and planning happening in that corner of the desert. Its like some weird form of meditation. Thank you. 😌
I own a marine upholstery shop in Tennessee. Reasoned for me saying this is i throw away alot of screen materials that are two small for me to use. I see you use the same for your plants if you want I'll send you alot of it for your ranch. Let me know if it's something you are interested in. Keep up the great work.
I just bought a 2008 Mastercraft X2 where the previous owner had let the boat sit on a lift with a deteriorated cover. The interior is pretty much shot. I'm in Smithville and I'm looking for a shop that not only has a good reputation, but one that is familiar with Mastercraft. Would you be interested in offering a quote? All the shops in my area wouldn't be able to schedule me in for a year. Thanks in advance.
As for the realization you were sharing at the start, after around 15 years in video game dev, I've come to a similar conclusion. Often time it's best to just do things "the stupid way" and once that works, iterate on it until it gets good. At least half the issues I've had on various projects came from someone trying to fix a problem before they come up.
Long time watcher, first time commenter. I loved this retrospective! It was so nice getting a more candid video of how this journey has affected you. Regarding the fatigue from reading/answering UA-cam comments. This has inspired me to actually read the comments myself and “like” ones that seem especially helpful, supportive, or informative. It might even be worth asking other viewers to do the same in order to help bring good comments to the top of your focus! I also wonder if there are any AI tools that can summarize UA-cam comments or put them into useful buckets for you. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you. It’s been incredibly entertaining, informative, and inspiring. I hope you can find ways to continue making the UA-cam process less cognitively and financially taxing. 💙
I’ve been watching from the beginning. It was nice to get your personal struggles and, taking us along for the ride. Your videos are very encouraging. I always look forward to your Saturday videos. 🎄Merry Christmas to you and yours.
I started my project in 2014. I am in Deep East Texas. I also work alone and it’s a one man project and show. Always something to do. The constant growth of the weeds is a challenge. Starting a cabin soon. You are welcome to visit anytime. 3-4 hours from Fort Worth. 🤝🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
learn to use the weeds. i figured out "weeds" often had a medicine, root, or something that was valuable. and the deer/rabbit love them, so I had a lot less planting to do than I thought. One way to go about it is to identify them, then figure out what the Natives were using them for for example a lot of folks consider dandelion a weed, but its about the most useful plant in the world and it grows like wildfire. you can use it to make rubber, medicine, salad, etc
@@tigerstallion except that dandelion IS a weed - it is non-native to North America. It was brought over by Europeans as a food crop and was extremely successful at spreading pretty much everywhere. If an area does not currenly have dandelion you should not introduce it.
Thank you for being so honest with your audience. I’ve enjoyed watching you learn on the fly, accepting mistakes and your persistence. I’m a big fan of your work and wish you continued success
My son always had tinnitus, and we didn't know until my husband and I were discussing the way it sounded (both of us have it too). He was little and heard the discussion and said "everybody has that" - he didn't know it was not "normal" to have ringing and buzzing in our ears. I've had it so long I frequently don't notice it until it gets really loud on certain days. It can be hard to hear other sounds over it. It could be an early indication of hearing loss.
It might not be tinnitus. I too was plagued by a sound from a very young age that I could hear when it was very quiet. my hearing never got worse and the sound never louder. The sound could be the normal operating frequency of the nervous system. It operates in a range of frequencies that some people notice. 60mHz is the sound I hear. There are others, you can search youtube for samples of these ranges. I am sorry about your tinnitus, it sounds like you have more than just hearing your nervous system.
Tinnitus is not an early sign of hearing loss, it is the result of hearing loss. Your ear got damaged around a certain frequency and can no longer send the specific signal to your brain. Because your brain is used to getting atleast a basic level of sound, it tries to compensate at that frequency. If you dont have hearing loss, something else may be going on and you should see a doctor I think. (I am not a doctor, I might be wrong) Wish you bestof luck
Irrigation is great, can’t wait to see what the water retention structures do, and for you to build many more across every natural waterway on the property.
I had to turn up the volume because your audio seems quite low at times, which when an advertisement pops up it's a blast to the ear drums. That being said, I love your videos Shaun! So good to see you past 200K subs now! Keep up the great work!
Good stuff man! Please keep in mind that a lot of those who are the most critical, likely want you to achieve your goals as much as you. I know that as a gardener, it has been hard to watch some of your learning. This video was helpful to help give me context regarding where you are coming from and a number of things to keep in mind before being anything less than supportive. Keep up the good work and I sincerely hope the rain comes soon. We all want to see the results of all of your efforts!
When i watch these episodes, its sort of like, watching the pioneers learning to scratch out a living in the American west. Its fun and fascinating. I wish you well.
I appreciate the reflection and honesty from Shaun in this episode and my own reflection is how rare it is I have found that a wife will support the dreams of her man to let him leave for a week every month and take so many financial and often physical risks. Having support and a purpose that is bigger than yourself is the best!
Thank you for the video! This is much closer to the content I was "expecting", I guess. Honest, open, human. Not that previous content was not all those things, but this video hits different. Haters will hate. You got it! You know some stuff that works. You keep pushing forward. All the best luck in the project!
Shaun! This is the best episode so far! I’ve come here to watch your trees and shrubs’ development, but your talking from your mind hit me straight into my heart! Enjoyed every single minute of this episode! Greetings from Ukraine
Thanks for sharing so many personal challenges. I have acute hearing loss, struggle with alcohol addiction, and wish I had a project to go put some honest work in every month. That’s why I follow this channel. Merry Christmas and I can’t wait to see what next year brings
hi Shaun, just wanna say thank you for making these videos week after week. I always look forward to warching them. Blessings from Denmark ( no need to reply (-: just wanted to say thank you)
I really think you are doing a great job. It’s really interesting to watch how you have been working to get plants going and how it’s done in that type of climate.
Love your work. I can't imagine how dry that area of the world is. I've lived in almost the polar opposite climate my whole life. We might go 6 weeks without rain and that's a huge drought. We have flooding issues and 30 straight days of rain. This all makes me appreciate the work you're doing so much more as water here can be a burden and taken for granted. You would love to have the "little shower" that's passing over as I type. Keep up the good work can't wait to see what the place is like in 5 years time.
I love your honesty around 09:15; that rings a bell for me. I live in highly densely populated Netherlands and many Dutch people sometimes long for some space and wilderness.
Maybe others have mentioned this before but I began to wonder if coffee grounds would make an positive additive to your compost mixture. I was at my local favorite coffee house and asked how much coffee grounds they get and what is done with them and they told me they get more than a lot of grounds and it all goes to the landfill. I love watching your different thoughts on what to use and what works best for your project there.
Shaun - although you will probably never know me, I appreciate that you opened up about yourself. I think that so many people around the US are incredibly lonely, and you, your story and your work make us all feel more connected. The fact that you’re sober is amazingly inspiring!!! I am attempting to turn a monoculture small “finca” into something more permaculture-ish. It is not easy and often confusing. God bless you and keep the wind at your back for all you’ve done!!! I know you’ve done so much more off screen as well. Big hug and a very Merry Christmas to you and your family!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love it Shaun! Thanks for sharing, thanks for your time and entertaining Journey. (What's a Saturday night without a Dustups video?) We just keep praying for rain (and for it to stop here in the Netherlands). Merry X-mas& Happy New Year!
"that experience" you were referring to at the end, I spent two summers tree planting in Northern Ontario. I can see the parallels for sure. And "distance being a filter", great line!
Ho Chi Minh once said: ""With your hands, stone and soil will become rice." The phrase reflects his belief in the power of hard work, determination, and resourcefulness. It encapsulates his encouragement to use the hard labor and ingenuity to overcome challenges. In many ways, beyond the machinery, this aligns closely with what you are striving to achieve. Keep up the great work!
Awesome video Shaun. I travel all around texas every week, and I totally agree with it being a palet clenser to get out of the metroplex. The pay days are the the stars at night, the sunsets, and the peace. Also taking land that was just erroding away and making it useful is so rewarding in its own way. Hope you have a great holiday, and another great year at dustups
it's a rescue beacon (he answerd to one comment asking the same) There are soooo many ppl asking what those lights are.... xD (which i find funny, because he said in the video, that he often answers the same stuff multiple times)

I have such rad tinnitus that there’s no quiet time for me ever… I have mass respect for you and your goal… Have an amazing holiday brother🤙🏻🇺🇸🎄🎅🏻❤️
Listening to 10-minute loops of crickets reduces my tinnitus for 30 to 50 minutes.
and its the worst when you get those random ~5 sec max volume ring.
Around 15:18 in the video, there's a flashing glint off of what I assume is a vehicle window in the distance over your right shoulder. It happens several times. Either that or someone is signaling with a mirror. Anyway, it's a small detail that I noticed and am wondering what is back there.
They are welding metal posts for the Trump Mexico wall
aliens 👽
Mothership 😂
Yeah, you see it again at 18:12
I saw it too!
We got a million animations this time...I love it! (We even got the animator's shadow)
You guys kill it every time!
Keep them coming....They're my favorite part of the show!
Stay awesome,
Jeff
This show has a " Bob Ross" effect on me.
Same
Bhwhaaaaaaaa ... !😂
Thank you. 😌
me too!!!!!!!!! I love Saturdays now that Shaun's videos come on.
I've watched your personal growth since the channel started. You're doing great man. Keep it up
So that’s why I connect with you. I sobered up in the 80’s when I was 25. Very glad I raised my kids sober. 👍
Merry Christmas, Shawn. One day at a time. 😎👍
That was a nice video, explaining a lot. And the blinking thing in the background is a rescue beacon.
Yes it could be, I’ve seen those out there in the desert along the border.
Reading the comments to see if anyone else had noticed that. So it's kind of like a landmark or did someone activate it because they need rescuing?
@9:39 amen!!🙏 so good. God bless you and all you are doing here it’s beautiful and it’s been so fun to follow along with!
Shaun is indeed blessed!
My favorite episode so far.. WELL DONE!! ❤
The ability to keep going in the face of adversity is what built the modern world.
Good job on all the work and good luck with the future.
Merry Christmas! 🎄
One way to go about it is to identify them, then figure out what the Natives were using them for
for example a lot of folks consider dandelion a weed, but its about the most useful plant in the world and it grows like wildfire. you can use it to make rubber, medicine, salad, etc
@@tigerstallion except that dandelion IS a weed - it is non-native to North America. It was brought over by Europeans as a food crop and was extremely successful at spreading pretty much everywhere. If an area does not currenly have dandelion you should not introduce it.
Thanks! Keep doing good work. Have a great holiday season.
the real dustups was the friends we made along the way
Thank you for being so honest with your audience.
@@pimcramer2569 Yes, thank you - I did know that - just trying to keep it simple. I do appreciate the opportunity to learn something new everyday.
Keep it up Shaun, you’re making all our lives better, not just the dustups ranch xxx
Irrigation is great, can’t wait to see what the water retention structures do, and for you to build many more across every natural waterway on the property.
I'd say your desert forest project is your work. Your job is what you do for a living supporting your family.
And hang in there buddy! We’re rooting for you.
I had to turn up the volume because your audio seems quite low at times, which when an advertisement pops up it's a blast to the ear drums. That being said, I love your videos Shaun! So good to see you past 200K subs now! Keep up the great work!
I had the same problem, but then I got a hearing aid and it's absolutely wonderful now!
This is one of my favorite episodes ever. I like the philosophical side of this, and admire what you're doing and why.
Keep at it!!! It's amazing seeing the progress you have made already and I'm looking forward to what's still to come
When i watch these episodes, its sort of like, watching the pioneers learning to scratch out a living in the American west. Its fun and fascinating. I wish you well.
You’re living the dream Shaun. I’m enjoying your content and look forward to seeing the progress every week. 🙏🏻
Shaun is sharing his hopes and dreams with us. What are some of yours?
I appreciate the reflection and honesty from Shaun in this episode and my own reflection is how rare it is I have found that a wife will support the dreams of her man to let him leave for a week every month and take so many financial and often physical risks.
Having support and a purpose that is bigger than yourself is the best!
I love your humble and grateful spirit! May God bless your hands and may He increase the rain to your property 😊
Thank you for the video! This is much closer to the content I was "expecting", I guess. Honest, open, human. Not that previous content was not all those things, but this video hits different. Haters will hate. You got it! You know some stuff that works. You keep pushing forward. All the best luck in the project!
Great episode. Love your honesty and attitude. Love you videos.
Great episode Shaun - thanks for sharing so much of your personal story.
love what you're doing. hoping 2025 sees a lot of progress - and rain!
You’re grit and integrity is inspirational. The only way forward is that direction over there. Day in and out, we are rooting for you.
i love what your doing, dont listen to negative people.keep up the good work.
Keep doing as long as you can keep doing. Your plan is inspirational. Nothing good comes easy.
Keep on keeping on brother. It is great to see your progress and I appreciate your videos. Prayers for rain and great success.
hi Shaun, just wanna say thank you for making these videos week after week. I always look forward to warching them.
Blessings from Denmark ( no need to reply (-: just wanted to say thank you)
Hi guys! Nice ideia to do every year a comparative before and after.
Your efforts have inspired, entertained, educated and helped me. Thank you. Many wishes for your continued success.
One of my favorite projects on UA-cam. Keep it up. Thank you.
I really think you are doing a great job. It’s really interesting to watch how you have been working to get plants going and how it’s done in that type of climate.
Thank you Shaun for sharing your adventure. Merry Christmas to you and your family (and Brandon).
Merry Christmas!
Thank you for your channel. I look forward to new videos.
I love your honesty around 09:15; that rings a bell for me. I live in highly densely populated Netherlands and many Dutch people sometimes long for some space and wilderness.
Thank you for telling us about your feelings and Emotions and explaining many things.
I was happiest doing physical work - especially outdoors. ❤❤❤❤❤❤☮☮ "Bermuda Triangle of Equipment" - hilarious.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great channe. Enjoy the holidays!
With your determination, I hope most of your goals are met in the coming year.. God bless you, all around you, and have a Merry Christmas
Thanks!
I'm here to watch you try to overcome this very difficult challenge. Because I'm not crazy enough to do something like that myself.
Thank you for taking homage. I must go now.
Love it Shaun!
Thanks for sharing, thanks for your time and entertaining Journey. (What's a Saturday night without a Dustups video?)
We just keep praying for rain (and for it to stop here in the Netherlands).
Merry X-mas& Happy New Year!
"that experience" you were referring to at the end, I spent two summers tree planting in Northern Ontario. I can see the parallels for sure. And "distance being a filter", great line!
Great video. Nice to see all the thought behind everything.
Wonderful that you're fluent in such a poetic yet mathematical language!
Thanks for the realness and also raising awareness on noise pollution
Thanks Shaun!
Awesome video Shaun. I travel all around texas every week, and I totally agree with it being a palet clenser to get out of the metroplex. The pay days are the the stars at night, the sunsets, and the peace. Also taking land that was just erroding away and making it useful is so rewarding in its own way.
Hope you have a great holiday, and another great year at dustups
anyone see that blue flicker at 13:15??
drone
It’s a spooky ghost!
it's a rescue beacon (he answerd to one comment asking the same)
There are soooo many ppl asking what those lights are.... xD (which i find funny, because he said in the video, that he often answers the same stuff multiple times)
One at 16:22 as well
