  • Catching Crab by Sooke using "Sea King Casting Crab Traps" chicken and penut butter bait. We caught 4 legal males in about 1 1/2 hours. We also had a visit from a seal . We filmed it using GoPro underwater, DJI Phantom 3 pro drone, and DSLR cameras. Feb 2016

I have been crabbing for years and have been to that dock only a few times. The way you filmed it made everything look fantastic! Really good job and glad to see the whole family out enjoying a nice day. Thanks for making this video!

Every time I see these videos, I just want to jump right into the water and grab them with my hands. Looks pretty deep and a bit chilly though! :P

Good to know it's possible to catch a bunch of Dungeness from the pier in Victoria! Thank you!

I've caught mostly red rocks. All the dungeness I've caught were either too small or females.

I noticed in most of the videos that people throw the trap. We use a fishing with the same type of trap for crabbing in Washington state. Is a fishing pole not an approved equipment for Vancouver BC

Ten minutes if you have kids with you and half and hour if there are no kids. With those kind of traps. Great for kids.

How come you wait so long? It looks like they come right away. Wouldn’t it make more sense to see what you have right away and if there’s no keepers, you have a head start on recasting in a different direction? That trap can’t catch more than 4 crabs anyway..

What is the minimum size of crab that you are allowed to catch? Im curious because it will be my first time catching crabs.

Depends on the type of crab. In Southern Vancouver Island there are two main types of crab: Red Rock and Dungeness. Specifically in Sooke, you will mainly catch Dungeness crab. They are larger. Legal size for Dungeness is greater than 165 mm, or 6.5 inches. For Red Rock, it's 115 mm or roughly 4.5 inches. However, if you're planning on going to the same pier in Sooke as in the video, I would look elsewhere. It's so over-fished right now due to all the crabbing tourists/locals bored during Covid/big family groups with 20 pots between them that there are next to no male crab left. I tried for a couple hours today and caught only one small female, so RIP me

Next to impossible to find a keeper. Even harder to not have a seal rip apart your trap.

Doesn’t it depend on the time of year ?

Sydney spit has lots of dungee males. Common over.

@@mikenelson9366 "Sydney" - you must be thinking of a different province. There's a Sydney Nova Scotia, even a Sydney Australia. Sidney is on the Saanich Peninsula.
Don't you have to take a ferry to Sidney Spit? How do you get your crabs home alive?
