I would soak the raw reed in warm water with soda ash for up to half an hour first. Then do the dye bath. Soda ash works as a fabric softener opening up the fibers a little more for whatever natural material you are dyeing.

Hello Brittany @TextileIndie, Thank you for all your tutorials, they are very helpful 😍. I just started making baskets and was wondering if we can dye basket reed and rush using a natural dye method? Thank you again 🌷🙏🌻 from London

Sure, most natural dyes will create a more muted color than synthetic dyes - but it's a fun way to experiment. I would suggest using small pieces of reed to test the effect before you commit.
I have a post on natural dyes on the website...

Nice color. Have you ever tried anything like Minwax wood stains on reed? I wonder if it would take?

Thanks! I haven't tried Minwax on reed. I have found that reed does not absorb wood stains in the same way wood does. I do use some Danish Oils and have used wood stains but they end up being more of a topical treatment rather than absorbing into the grains and fibers of the reed. If you do try Minwax let me know how it goes, I'm always on the lookout for new ways and products to use.

hi does the dying effect how the cane is used later im assuming that you leave it to dry and then resoak I know resoaking cane once you have used it can effect its quality

Reed can get more brittle with age. But I use my dyed reed the same as other reed. Soaking it a bit before working with it.
