    The Casio G-Shock, released back in 1983, was designed to be able to withstand a fall from 10 meters (33 feet). In this video, we decided to put that theory to the test the best way we could think of, with a helicopter. Of course, we don't stop there, testing the G-Shock at different heights all the way up to 100 meters. What do you guys think of this style of content? What other types of extreme watch tests would you like to see?

    If I fell 50m out of a heli, I don’t think I’d be too worried about my watch

      Not me, I'm the guy who swims 200m deep and tests the watch. They try to tell you they use a pressure chamber but no, it's me. Same as the drop rating G shock actually made me jump of the statue of Jesus's in Brazil as it was the perfect height. Watch only got scratches from my wrist hitting it as my skin is harder than metal. Diving 1000m deep for some of those higher end dive waters was tough but still light work as im, well...me. so you're welcome.

    there are a lot of design features that make it so drop-resistant: The strap acts as a spring, so if it happens to fall back-down, that will absorb a lot of energy, the case is framed in a deformable material which protects lateral impacts, the crystal is recessed below the frame, so, unless hitting on something protruding out of the ground, it is still protected. Finally, being generally light, it has a small momentum when free-falling from normal heights. That is really an amazing line

    This is different, never thought how tough G-Shock watches were. I'd like to see the popular GA2100 dropped and see how it does withe the analogue hands. Thank you!

      I +1 this. I assume digital Gs can withstand more as they have no moving parts. It would be interesting to see how analog models fare, like a CasiOak. Or maybe a more expensive analog/digital model, like a Rangeman/Bluetooth Mudmaster. Also, what happens with steel watches, like the GW-5000. A single model doesn't really show how strong these watches are (or not). Also, the comparison was kinda unfair since you compared an all resin watch with much heavier, metal/bracelet watches. What happens with an all plastic Amazon watch? Or an F91w? Cool idea, but definitely needs a follow up with more watches and compare them from a reasonable height, like dropping all of them from 10 meters, multiple times.

      I think with the carbon core providing that shock support, it would likely be similar or close. I’d assume Casio tests the shit out of any watch that bares the G-Shock branding.

      Cool idea to test, bad idea for daily life.
      I owned a GA-201 (analog & digital) once. Dropped it around 3 times on separate occasions, around the height of human torso (1m-1.5m). After the third drop, the analog hands went crazy; it still runs, but in weird way (there are times it runs parallel with normal clock, and the other times it moves slower/stop moving). I guess the gears in the body are busted. But it still runs the digital clock correctly.

      I’d say dropping them from a helicopter exceeded the design spec that Casio tested their watches with. I think the damage and lack of damage was purely a fluke.
      It would be interesting to see more scientific data to back this up, however this channel and this episode are not and were not about science. It was just a fun experiment.

    I’m really curious to see how a set of bull bars on the GM 5600 would do in a drop test. Also need to see the CasiOak GA B2100 drop test. Maybe also do a big one? like a Mudmaster or “Gravity Master” 😉 with an analog/digital display, and the “King of G” - test the toughest G-Shocks. Awesome video and idea btw - maybe start a go fund me to help with heli fuel and G-SHOCK expenses lol, I’ll donate right now!!

    Might want to take note the helicopter is applying more downward wind velocity causing the watches to go down much faster than a normal drop day off the side of the building

      Not directly underneath it it isn't. There is a sort of "curtain" of air circling the edge of the rotor pushing down hard but directly under the heli there is no movement of air. Source: I work on a rescue boat and we often have to go under coastgaurd heli's and you have to punch throught the air curtain, you can feel it, but directly underneath it there is no downward air draft.

      tthe increased initial acceleration doesn't matter because the watch will hit terminal velocity before it hits the ground regardless of it the downward force applied by the helicopter is present or not

      Larger models like the mudmaster have a thicker protection layer but weigh a bit more. Probably the same result.

      @@jackrayner1263 That would have been a very expensive experiment. I guess that’s what the cheap Amazon versions are there for. Normal watches are not built for that huge a shock. It’s super impressive that the G shock can withstand that large an impact.

      @@memelicious1924 I agree, the larger mass would have likely caused the same results. Would have been interesting to see if the screen was the failing point though. Something like the Casio oak with its hands might have had slightly better or worse results at that 30 meter point. But still very good video and good to know if I take a helicopter ride I can loose my gshock out the window as long as we are under 30 meters at the time.

    The mass of a G Shock will mean it reaches terminal velocity at about 23m off the ground so the damage will be exactly the same at anything above that- still fun to watch them messing around though 😁

      True but mass effects how quickly it reaches terminal velocity in relation to drag- something big and light will take longer to reach terminal velocity than something small and heavy- just kept the comment simple

      @@swanney75 that is not true: terminal velocity is dictated by the drag coefficient alone. The mass is only important when talking about the kinetic energy of the object.

    This is something I always wanted to do or see but can’t. Does prove the strength of a G-Shock though; any height that G-Shock would break from while you’re wearing it would be a height where the condition of the watch would be the least of your worries.

    It's very impressive when you remember that the original goal of the G-Shock was just to survive 10m of free fall on to concrete. It's not supposed to be unkillable, it just has to survive more than you can lol.

    Excellent video Teddy! I missed this one as we were on a mountaineering holiday in Turkey, and I dropped a Mudmaster GG-1000 as I was checking a compass bearing, fell about 50 metres, bounced all the way down and was perfect except for scuffs on the strap. Really enjoyed this video. Excellent job! Maybe you can try a Rolex Submariner next. 🤔😜😂😂

      To be honest the test was more for the g-shocks and seeing how they would withstand the different heights rather. The inclusion of the other watches was more for the excuse to throw more watches and see them explode not to be a direct comparison for testing against other brands.

    Man I really liked the vid! Speaking about looks or specs is always nice, but it's just a different thing to put the watch to the test 😎. I work as a firefighter, and I'm super into beater watches that suit my job. Would be awesome to see more testing videos on this channel. Water resistance under pressure?     Resin G-Shock usually withstand a lot, would be interesting to see how a metal G-Shock handle the drops, like a GMW, GST, GM series. Nice video!

    Kind of goes with what other people have said, but I’m guessing the G-Shocks are almost unbreakable as long as they don’t land on their face (low terminal velocity). The straps stabilize them though, so they land on their face mostly.

    Awesome… love these excursions out into the field. For next time: a camera at ground level filming the crash zone at 120fps would have been next level.

      The impacts were all recorded in 4K 120 fps fully slowed down. So we would have had to get a ultra slow mo camera to go any slower.

      I think it wouldn't make much of a difference because at the hights of 30 meters gras is almost as hard as any other surface! Remember the watch is falling down at 9.81m/s^2! 🤔

      My guess is that it would do much better on grass aka dirt. Any resilience in the surface it impacts will go a long way towards reducing peak accelerations and thus peak stresses. Still, only one way to find out!

    This is more exhilarating than destroying Rolex replicas with a shotgun. This actually shows how tough our beloved G-Shocks are. I like when Teddy tries new things on UA-cam. It reminds me of the video where he makes his friends guess the prices of various luxury watches. It was a lot of fun, and so is this. More, please!

    Impressive results. I was just telling a friend last week that I thought my DW-5600 could withstand a fall from a 10 story building and you proved I am correct. They are very tough watches.

    Although a cool experiment, the rotor wash does (initially) speeds up the watch when its thrown out of the chopper. I would imagine that the watch can actually take a fall from a far higher height before breaking into pieces, for example, when thrown from a building. (Edit: typo's)

      Actually I don't think thats true. The watch is quite light and I believe reaches terminal velocity pretty quickly. I'm guessing that's the reason for the damage looking so similar 30 metres and higher.

      I don't think they would break on grass from any height. They probably already reach terminal velocity at 30 meters.

    Your hard work on this really paid off guys, that was awsome to see! You can try to turn this into a series; plenty of other G-Shock variants out there that could pontially yield difrent resaults such as the CasiOaks, metal G-shocks... Regular watches even under diferent kind of dures, what can they, what cant they take. Divers in their "natural" habitat would be interesting to see. Field watches also, how "field"actually are they, apart from the design? Can they take the enviroment? You have plenty to work with to develop this into a regular thing.

    As surprisingly durable as the GShocks are, the helicopter may be pushing them down faster by air flow. If they were dropped from a stationary tower I suspect you could add 10m to the height most broke at.

    Great video. I did such with a Vostok, it broke at 50m, I've used a drone wich has far less downward airflow than a Heli. I think you can add 20-30m for the G-shock with your heli.

    Interesting video. Two issues: 1) at a certain height the dropping object will reaching terminal velocity and any additional height doesn’t make any difference. 2) The weight of the watch makes a ton of difference in terminal velocity, as well as the kinetic energy of impact. So dropping watches with different weight is really not comparing apple to apple.
    I feel Teddy should have explained the science and done some calculations in the video. That’ll make the experiment more informative.

    This is totally sweet! A+ content. I would watch this for any and all varieties of G-Shock. Especially interested in the metal ones, and the titanium models in particular, like the Virtual Armor series.

    Great video. I would love to see the same tests with a King (GX-56) as this is often lauded as one of the toughest G-Shocks.

      GX-56 will withstand any height - they are absolutely shockproof! After a certain height, the fall speed is the same - so they can be thrown from any height.
