    A good thing to bear in mind is that by cupping a mic, you're effectively changing its polar pattern into omni. This could make it more prone to feedback and leaking, since it doesn't reject sound coming from the back so well anymore. It might not be a problem in many situations, but in some cases it may.

    Thanks. Normally not a fan of mic'd harp, but it's good to know. However, I am a fan of your style of teaching. Keep playing.

    Thanks Tomlin, I appreciate this comparison video. I've never tried an SM57 like the one you demonstrated. I've been using the "Green Bullet" and that's my preference, but I have large hands. I really like the "greasy" tone it gives the harp. My amp of choice is the Fender Pro Junior.

    I have a green bullet mic, but as I am a smaller man, my hands cannot seal it no matter what I do. I did not know about the stick mics. So thank you, I will look at those as they seem to be much narrower.

    Is there a glaring reason that I'm missing why more people don't play in front of a mic, instead of holding it. Or is it just preference and mostly everyone prefers holding the mic?

    The small shell Shure's where the screw holes are top and bottom vs on the side are easier to hold and much sought after. I see a lot of brown ones with the small shell(special design for recording) on nameplate as well as others. The current Green Bullet is not one of them.

    Great vid. I hold the harmonica, using the same grip but in the other hand, should I change? I'm only 2 months in and not really ready for playing over a mic, but I've gotten pretty used to how I hold it now.

  • @srrlIdl
    @srrlIdl 7 років тому +1

    Your way of explaining is great, but I would suggest you look into an alternative way of holding the harmonica: the way experts like Joe Filisko and Steve Baker teach it. Also: why did you put black tape on your Ultimate 57?

    • @TomlinHarmonica
      @TomlinHarmonica  7 років тому +1

      +surrealIdeal hiya, I've tried a bunch of different grips and this one works for me :-). The rubber tubing is to stop air leaking through the mic grill.

    Hello, I noticed, when I play, micro catch the sound of air from my harmonica. Especially blow 3, 4, 5. Microphone is sm58, amp is Fender Champion 20.
    How to overcome this situation?
    Thanks!

    I'm left handed, so I use my right hand to hold the harmonica. Is that the right way for lefties?

    • @StarQueenEstrella
      @StarQueenEstrella Рік тому

      Paul Butterfield was left-handed and did something similar. However, he apparently held it upside-down, i.e. with hole 1 on his right-hand side.

    Can I use Shure PG56 microphone? It's used for recording drums, but it's small like bullet microphone. I am not shore how it will sound with a harmonica.

    Hey Tomlin; I'm just an 'Ol Fart and don't know jack....but I waz just wonderin why you never mentioned; "puttin a leash from your wrist to the cord connection on the microphone....it prevents a "Dropped Mic" that can be embarrassing and/or EXPEN$$$IVE !

    Purpose of black tape on SM 57 mic?

    • @TomlinHarmonica
      @TomlinHarmonica  7 років тому +1

      +Larry Milco it is a rubber tube to stop air getting through the mic grill - I'm obsessive like that :-)

    • @elgen0314
      @elgen0314 6 років тому +1

      That rubber tube changes the pattern of the mic from cardiod to Omni. the the side grill provides back rejection.
