A long time ago, all the birds in the world were plain and had no colors. They decided to hold a meeting and asked the Creator to give them beautiful feathers. The Creator agreed and brought a pot full of bright colors to paint the birds.
One by one, the birds lined up to get their colors. The peacock chose shades of blue and green, the parrot picked green and red, and the robin took a warm orange chest. Each bird looked more beautiful than the last.
The crow was greedy and impatient. Instead of waiting for his turn, he thought of a trick. While no one was looking, he flew straight to the pot of colors and tried to take them all for himself. But in his hurry, he tripped and fell into the pot!
When the crow climbed out, his feathers were covered in black paint. He tried to clean himself, but the black color wouldn’t come off. The other birds laughed, and the Creator shook His head.
"Because of your greed," said the Creator, "you will remain black forever. But to remind others of honesty, I will give you a strong voice to warn them of danger."
From that day on, the crow has been black, and his loud cawing serves as a reminder not to be greedy or impatient.
