Interesting review. I have a shakedry jacket (gore wear) and I’m very happy with it. I only use it for running though, without any backpacks or any terrain that might damage it. I think for this specific purpose it’s the best jacket out there and I can wear it in anything from light summer rain to snow and still feel comfortable. However, for anything a little more demanding, this fabric clearly has its limitations as nicely explained by you and there are better alternatives witn 2, 2.5 or 3 layers.
Nice to find another user who agrees with my thoughts. Easily the best jacket out there for breathability but just too fragile. My new jacket is not as good but hopefully will last a bit longer !

Hopefully it will help make an informed decision. For a trail running jacket it is superb, if it lasts. But at around £200 its an expensive jacket to go wrong.

It seems any kind of rubbing against the jacket could cause damage which is easily done if out running in parks, wooded areas, etc. I know you said it performs really well however with it being so expensive, you would expect some level of durability in outdoor settings.
The point of goretex shakedry is to not have any other fabric on top of it. If you want durability you need to go to goretex pro and 70 to 100D outer fabric.
Glad to help. The problem with many reviews on youtube is that they are ' out of the box ' or review an item after little use. This jacket was brilliant for my first year of use, but it just is not durable enough for the price.
Thank you. It didn't spoil the trip at all. We did pretty well at avoiding the heavy thunderstorms. Just got a bit wetter than I would have liked at times.

I have 2 Arcteryx jackets , one of which cost 500 quid and its so disappointing when get wet through the inside especially when going on a camp ...Not convinced about the Paramo just yet especially because of the weight but not into ponchos either so i am still in limbo after 45 years of never truly finding a bombproof solution :(
I am still looking for a good lightweight solution. I have a heavier Mountain Equipment Rupal jacket that I use in Winter ( about 5 years old now ) but it still works really well.
My customer support experience with Arc’Teryx has been nothing short of phenomenal. There’s no guarantee you’ll have the same but I would recommend sending it in for warranty repair. Mine was north of 10yr old when I had a problem. The couldn’t repair it, so they replaced it with the current years model and paid the return shipping. P.S. they even called to apologize for only having 8 of the 10 colors for me to chose from 😂
I think this is a limitation of "Shakedry" material, it is just not robust enough withstand any kind of abrasion (I have Montbell's Peak Dry Shell - their advice is "To avoid exposing the outer layer to friction, keep your backpack as lightweight as possible to avoid exposing the outer layer to friction. When the fabric is exposed to friction it can develop a shiny appearance. Although this has no effect on the performance of the membrane, applying excessive friction to the membrane may cause fabric ripping and result in water penetration."). Whilst you can't reproof the jacket - you should be able to patch with Tenacious Tape, etc. Might not be the prettiest solution - but "black on black" shouldn't look too bad and it will at least make your jacket waterproof again.
I'm going to need a lot of tape ! But you are correct in that it is a limitation in this style of jacket. Works brilliantly but treat it like a delicate flower 🙂
Thanks for these reviews, I watched the first 2 before getting this jacket. Since I was never planning on backpacking with mine, this doesn't bother me too much. Ronhill should do more to emphasise this is not a backpack compatible Jacket. Gore were very clear with their r7 shakedry model that backpacks shouldn't be worn. I wonder if this is the reason shakedry hasn't caught on. The reputation for waterproofing and breathability is immense, but despite that there are only a few models which use it and most of them are out of stock/only in weird sizes, in the UK at least.
I think you are spot on with your observations. I remember early promotions describing the fabric as a gamechanger. Unfortuntately, it seems it is not rugged enough for outdoor use. I guess looked after carefully the membrane will hopefully last and not break down in any way.
It caught up - but not in the hiking community. But among cyclists (especially road) it is spreading like crazy and in this application it has a lot of sense. Although I know some who already are very close to getting their second, as the first one is showing the signs of wear.

I had the same problem. My ShakeDry jacket worked perfectly for one three week hike in Scotland and a few weekends in the Lakes but then started letting in water when it was raining heavily. Disappointed, yes, surprised, no. That has pretty much been my experience with every Gortex jacket I’ve ever owned whether it was a light weight one like this Shakedry or a Goretex Pro DWR jacket. They all fail after one season or a month of continuous use. Yes, the DWR jackets can be re-sprayed but it doesn’t really make any difference. I think the UK and especially Scotland is where Goretex goes to die and there’s nothing much we can do except buy a new jacket every year and cry over the outrageous expense. Or put up with being wet all the time…..
@Hunt On The Trails Instead of small tears my ShakeDry from Montbell has small pin holes so it looks like a planetarium when you hold it to the light. Strangely they don't seem to be concentrated in areas around rucksack straps but are evenly spread, even on the hood, which points to some other reason for the problem......

A £250 jacket that it that delicate. No thanks. I can imagine just the putting on and taking off over time and brushing against branches or anything else will ruin this delicate material that's meant to be used in physical workouts.
When I throw my pack on, I slide my right arm through the right-hand shoulder strap, and I swing the back around while I reach back with my left arm to thread that through the left shoulder strap. While I'm in mid-motion, the right-hand strap sits in the crook of my elbow. That area gets quite a bit of force as I put the pack and take it off. Are you right-handed? I bet this is what's caused the right arm to wear and not the left.
i've snatched a gore h5 and decided to only put it on when i'm in the rain (it's so breathable i could imagine wearing it always) so as to make it last, hopefully. we'll see how that works out, given the slightly heavier grade of fabric gore said is ok with light backpacks.
Maybe ok as a running jacket then if usable with a light pack. I've just returned from a backpacking trip with a new jacket I bought. Was ok, but breathability nowhere near the shakedry.
Not only the wear from a backpack, I think the material used for the jackets is not a good choice either. You have this solid film of PVC but attached to a super stretchy polyester/nylon/spandex fabric layer. It's going to wear away very fast even if you don't rub it against anything, just from rubbing against itself in the pits and elbows. Those long lines of damage look to me like spandex tears from the weak fabric snapping not normal wear from abrasion. If they wanted it to last I wonder why they didn't just use 100% polyester?

I had mine for just under 12 months before I started noticing it leaking. I had done about 50 days backpacking ( but not worn it everyday ) and a number of trail runs and races. I would have prefered it to have lasted a bit longer !

Maybe just check it for any damage. As I said, I held mine up against a bright window and you could see on the inside of the jacket where the micro tears were.
Looks like the only version of shakedry that can take some abrasion is the gore r7 trail with its 30% thicker material. But even with that it's for use with light backpack they say.
I have this jacket and did intend doing my multi day hikes with a backpack, do you think if I wear a very lightweight windproof, that has pit vents and a full zip over the top it will negate the issues that you have thankfully highlighted.? The windproof shell only adds another 48g
Possibly, I don't know. I have continued to wear my jacket for trail running over the winter. Even with a very light running pack it is showing abrasion signs over the shoulders and waist. Give it a go, see how comfortable it is and i hope it works !
Gore state ...... The original Active with Shakedry - as used in aforementioned HyperAir and Norvant - is insufficiently durable for backpacking, per Gore's usage guidelines. The H5 Shakedry uses a new heavier Shakedry variant that can better withstand abrasion from heavy packs and brush.
Was yours the trail version? The Trail versions are supposed to be more durable. I've a Propeller shakedry jacket by Mountain Equipment and had no problems. It's immaterial however as they are out of production.
Could it be that maybe the sleeves or waistband had ridden up and you have tugged them back down to maybe open those hairline fractures?? Stretching rather than abrasion ?? . Like if you were to pull on say a piece of kitchen towel it won’t stretch it’ll rip. Maybe a reason.
Interesting that you said tears that word makes it sound more like movement and stretching, I have just got one not had it out and if its the tight fitting nature of it and the movement which would be an even bigger problem with a running jacket, maybe over time if uouve had it 12 months. Really good review though. Ive had so many jackets eventually wet out even with good care Im still going to give mine a chance out hiking
Thanks for commenting. I guess in the review I was trying to convey my uncertainty as to what caused the jacket to break down. Ron Hill said rucksack abrasion which could be correct. The fact remains it's not durable which is a shame. I've just been out today on a run in the rain and it definitely leaked through the arms and front.

Hi. I am currently asking the same question ! Judith used an OMM Halo Jacket which seems to be doing OK, although it hasn't had the use of my shakedry jacket. Alpkit also do a very lightweight jacket. Maybe a lightweight goretex jacket might be the option. When I have chosen one for myself I will put up a video.
hi, I was reading that the Shakedry fabric had some resistance and therefore durability problems, and I read that there have been variations in the fabric on some manufacturers. Is this true or do all gore-tex Shakedry jackets have the exact same fabric?
I don't know. My only experience is with the jacket I have. I have continued to use it for trail running and there are definitely now signs of wear in the outer where my rucksack has rubbed against it. No longer waterproof😟

For me it is enough that it fits in the back pocket of the cycling jersey, but not if I would succeed with Gorewear, I have not found any reviews that show the compressibility of the jacket:(
lightweight=delicate. A running jacket is lightweight, a backpacking jacket is far from lightweight and will allways have a face fabric, sometimes a double layer on the shoulders. The wearing of even a small camelback greatly increases wear, I thought that was common sense.
I take your point, but at some point hopefully, someone will come up with a hardwearing lightweight material for waterproofs. It has happened with tent fabrics so why not waterproofs ?
@@huntonthetrails Tents still have a HH of 3000-5000 same as 30 years ago. As a tent is static there is no need for crazy numbers like 28,000 gortex ultra,the materials do not need to be anymore hardwearing than a tent of 30 years ago. Nothing should ever rub on the outside of a tent, so wear and tear not really an issue. Yes new materials have come about in the last 30 years that are lighter. But high end tents like hilleberg are made pretty much as they was 30 years ago. A lot of new tents are single skin=big draughts, some are made of a superlightweight material that will make sure you get no sleep in the slightest of breeze. But thats the compromise some ultralight hikers are prepared to put up with for a super light pack. And yes they allready have come up with a superligtweight hardwearing mega waterproof jacket/tent material but but but it has zero breathability. If you have a lightweight windproof shell, hold it upto the light as it could also have micro tears.
I know some people who run in very cheap waterproof jackets ( zero breathability ) as they are going to get wet from sweating anyway, or in windproof/showerproof jackets for the same reason.
@@huntonthetrails hi there. Honest question. If they’re gonna get wet anyway (from sweat if not the rain) then why bother with jackets at all? Or if it’s only for wind protection, then why not wear a regular windbreaker?
@@domzbu Its to do with cold. If you run in a jacket and sweat, you still feel warm ( Until you stop running ). If you run in a windproof and get wet from the rain you can get cold, even when running. I used this jacket on a 20 mile winter trail race this February in driving rain. Although my shirt got wet from sweat I never felt clammy or cold. If I had only worn a windproof and got soaked from the rain, it is likely that as I slowed down towards the end I would have got cold and uncomfortable.
Gore says the R7 Shakedry trail-running jacket can be used with a "light backpack". Is it possible that the abrasions were caused by thorns, small branches or other things you contacted it with while hiking? I hope it's not just from the backpack as carrying this in my photo backpack to have if it rains seems ideal as it's so light and packable.
It may be ok for a lightweight pack. I just think it's delicate for a £200 jacket. My wife thinks the arm abrasions were caused by pulling the rucksack on when wearing the jacket. Who knows ? It's a great jacket when working but I don't feel I got enough value from it.
@@huntonthetrails @docfink the damage will definitely be through wearing it with a pack. The way the fabric works is that the membrane is on the outside, you damage the membrane and you've got a knackered jacket. Even getting it muddy will do damage to the membrane. If you're carrying even a couple of kilos you'll already have damaged the membrane to a degree, probably even just the act of packing it in your pack will cause some damage
Every shakedry manufacturer states do not use with a backpack, Castelli, Rapha, 7mesh & Goretex themselves, all clearly state don't use with a backpack 🎒. Maybe as a reviewer you should read the manufactures guidence - especially your constant referral to the outer membrane (there isn't one). 🙄
Thank you for your comment. Actually, it did not explicitly say that this jacket was not for backpacking in the literature when I bought it otherwise I would not have purchased it. I am merely trying to alert others to this so they do not make the same mistake I did. I think the fact that many manufacturers have not adopted, or have dropped using this fabric illustrates it's limitations.

I agree. Knowing what I know now, I would not buy another one , even for just running in.

I would generally agree. The DWR is not effective for long enough and you are right, respraying never works as well.

I think that is why I can see all the micro tears when the jacket is held up to the light.
Maybe try the gore paclite jacket.

Mate, it's a running jacket. This was always going to happen to a lightweight running jacket. Gtx pro or Poncho 👌🏼
Yep. Lesson learned. My previous backpacking jacket was a Mountain Equipment Paclite jacket which lasted about 7 years.

I'll let you know. For the moment it will be my winter mountain equipment jacket, but at 500g its a bit heavier !
Interesting that you said tears that word makes it sound more like movement and stretching, I have just got one not had it out and if its the tight fitting nature of it and the movement which would be an even bigger problem with a running jacket, maybe over time if uouve had it 12 months. Really good review though. Ive had so many jackets eventually wet out even with good care Im still going to give mine a chance out hiking
Thanks for commenting. I guess in the review I was trying to convey my uncertainty as to what caused the jacket to break down. Ron Hill said rucksack abrasion which could be correct. The fact remains it's not durable which is a shame. I've just been out today on a run in the rain and it definitely leaked through the arms and front.

Hi. I am currently asking the same question ! Judith used an OMM Halo Jacket which seems to be doing OK, although it hasn't had the use of my shakedry jacket. Alpkit also do a very lightweight jacket. Maybe a lightweight goretex jacket might be the option. When I have chosen one for myself I will put up a video.

hi, I was reading that the Shakedry fabric had some resistance and therefore durability problems, and I read that there have been variations in the fabric on some manufacturers. Is this true or do all gore-tex Shakedry jackets have the exact same fabric?
I don't know. My only experience is with the jacket I have. I have continued to use it for trail running and there are definitely now signs of wear in the outer where my rucksack has rubbed against it. No longer waterproof😟

For me it is enough that it fits in the back pocket of the cycling jersey, but not if I would succeed with Gorewear, I have not found any reviews that show the compressibility of the jacket:(
lightweight=delicate. A running jacket is lightweight, a backpacking jacket is far from lightweight and will allways have a face fabric, sometimes a double layer on the shoulders. The wearing of even a small camelback greatly increases wear, I thought that was common sense.
I take your point, but at some point hopefully, someone will come up with a hardwearing lightweight material for waterproofs. It has happened with tent fabrics so why not waterproofs ?
@@huntonthetrails Tents still have a HH of 3000-5000 same as 30 years ago. As a tent is static there is no need for crazy numbers like 28,000 gortex ultra,the materials do not need to be anymore hardwearing than a tent of 30 years ago. Nothing should ever rub on the outside of a tent, so wear and tear not really an issue. Yes new materials have come about in the last 30 years that are lighter. But high end tents like hilleberg are made pretty much as they was 30 years ago. A lot of new tents are single skin=big draughts, some are made of a superlightweight material that will make sure you get no sleep in the slightest of breeze. But thats the compromise some ultralight hikers are prepared to put up with for a super light pack. And yes they allready have come up with a superligtweight hardwearing mega waterproof jacket/tent material but but but it has zero breathability. If you have a lightweight windproof shell, hold it upto the light as it could also have micro tears.
I know some people who run in very cheap waterproof jackets ( zero breathability ) as they are going to get wet from sweating anyway, or in windproof/showerproof jackets for the same reason.
@@huntonthetrails hi there. Honest question. If they’re gonna get wet anyway (from sweat if not the rain) then why bother with jackets at all? Or if it’s only for wind protection, then why not wear a regular windbreaker?
@@domzbu Its to do with cold. If you run in a jacket and sweat, you still feel warm ( Until you stop running ). If you run in a windproof and get wet from the rain you can get cold, even when running. I used this jacket on a 20 mile winter trail race this February in driving rain. Although my shirt got wet from sweat I never felt clammy or cold. If I had only worn a windproof and got soaked from the rain, it is likely that as I slowed down towards the end I would have got cold and uncomfortable.

It's quite a snug jacket. It's also not very adjustable so if you can I would try it on before you buy it.

Cycling and running with no pack or a very lightweight pack.
Gore says the R7 Shakedry trail-running jacket can be used with a "light backpack". Is it possible that the abrasions were caused by thorns, small branches or other things you contacted it with while hiking? I hope it's not just from the backpack as carrying this in my photo backpack to have if it rains seems ideal as it's so light and packable.
It may be ok for a lightweight pack. I just think it's delicate for a £200 jacket. My wife thinks the arm abrasions were caused by pulling the rucksack on when wearing the jacket. Who knows ? It's a great jacket when working but I don't feel I got enough value from it.
@@huntonthetrails @docfink the damage will definitely be through wearing it with a pack. The way the fabric works is that the membrane is on the outside, you damage the membrane and you've got a knackered jacket. Even getting it muddy will do damage to the membrane. If you're carrying even a couple of kilos you'll already have damaged the membrane to a degree, probably even just the act of packing it in your pack will cause some damage
Every shakedry manufacturer states do not use with a backpack, Castelli, Rapha, 7mesh & Goretex themselves, all clearly state don't use with a backpack 🎒. Maybe as a reviewer you should read the manufactures guidence - especially your constant referral to the outer membrane (there isn't one). 🙄
Thank you for your comment. Actually, it did not explicitly say that this jacket was not for backpacking in the literature when I bought it otherwise I would not have purchased it. I am merely trying to alert others to this so they do not make the same mistake I did. I think the fact that many manufacturers have not adopted, or have dropped using this fabric illustrates it's limitations.
A thin black plastic bin liner would have been a wiser choice. More waterproof, far cheaper and look exactly the same. 🙄😂
