For some reason Piet has trama from shooting a 30-06. 😂
I think you got my point... for hunting 30-06 is still really relevant. Piet should have been more clear about whether this is for long range target shooting... or hunting.

@@DesertRunninOutdoors I don't mean to argue with you... but I never found the part in the video where Impact Shooting said "New guy getting into long range shooting" He did say "new guys getting into the sport" I think he left it up to interpretation... And maybe that is where the heart of the disagreement is. For Impact Shooting a target cartridge is a great hunting cartridge for him. He might think the 6.5 Creedmoor is a great do it all cartridge. While I think it's a poor big game cartridge(Elk and bigger)

    I'm a target shooter.
I want to use a 300 PRC, but the recoil energy is about 16 joules,
So you really need a brake which is not allowed in F-open.
So I looked at 7mm PRC, the issue there is it's harder to get brass for it here in Australia.
My mate shoots 284w brass is fairly common but expensive.
So I'm likely going to buy a 7mm-08 AI reamer set and get a custom built 7mm-08 AI built with custom dies and a hydro form die.
It's expensive initially, but I can run cheap Winchester brass, or if I want to switch, I can switch to a small rifle primer brass.
Hunters don't really need to worry about brass as much, because a 100 pack of brass is probably plenty.
But when you target shoot, you sometimes need 1-2000 cases of one headstamp.
This is because some matches could see you shoot 1-200 rounds a day, if it's a 5 day comp you can need 1000 rounds loaded.

Audio level on his video is so low that he's almost impossible to hear. Most people would be fine with 30-06, 303, 308, 270, 284, 7mm-08, or whatever. It doesn't really matter. They are at point blank range and they don't need the small difference in energy that they will get from going from a 30-06 to a 300 Win Mag... which he probably also doesn't like. The deer whose ancestors fell dead from a well placed 2,000 ft.lbs 30-30 won't notice the difference between a well placed 3,300 and 3,900 ft.lbs. Most people are wasting their money on fashion. Most people can hardly hit the black on a UIT target at 100 yards when shooting off a bench. So small improvements in performance beyond 1,000 yards aren't going to be noticeable for them. I don't know of a range past 100 yards within hundreds of miles of where I live in the north east forest. There aren't many places we see deer past 100 yards. So I stand by my decision to buy rifles chambered for ammo I can buy in any store.

I think piet made a great balanced video, I have a 30-06 and it shoots everything I need to up to 200 metres, if I didn't have that I would like to have a 300 prc, oooooooh baby what a weapon. But I'm happy with the old school 30-06, good ammo and you can stretch it out to reach stuff out far.

If you handload , use modern powders , and use the larger bullets 180gr up to 220gr that it has the case capacity for, the 30-06 isn’t a handicap by any means as a baseline hunting gun.
I would choose it and not feel undergunned. Depends on what your use is for and how far.

I think he does make a point for what he's intending to do, which is what you say. He's not hunting, he's shooting holes in paper 1000 yards out. Piet follows the crowd, that's why he's shooting a 6 Dasher. It's the cartridge that was in vogue for 1000 yards, but it seems 6 Creedmoor is sneaking in...Piet has bought into fast and flat...so 30-06 is not going to be his favorite cartridge. Would be like mentioning 375 H&H. Still used on the deadliest game in Africa, where Piet is located...I wonder how Piet feels about banded solid monolithics?

Very true. I usually look at it like this:
If you currently have say a 7mm rem mag and shoot inside 400 yards, running out and buying a 7 PRC isn’t going to change your life. If your 7mm rem mag is a 15# rifle and you’re tired of carrying it, and don’t mind buying two types of ammo then sure, get the PRC if you want something new. I rarely recommend picking up a new CARTRIDGE if you have something similar unless you’re getting it in a RIFLE that fills a gap for you. Or, if you just want a new rifle for fun, I won’t tell you no either 😂 I think you get what I’m saying.

Well, now you know someone that shoots a 280 Remington. I purchased a Browning A-Bolt in 1985 chambered in 280. It still rocks today. From Red Stag on down, it's amazing. I do however handload 160grain class bullets. My Rifle loves them. If I get a wild hair, I can load within 100fps of the 7 mag. I usually stay around 2800fps with the 160s. It's a tack driver. I've never taken an animal past 250 yards. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

With modern projectiles powders primers and even brass near identical performance can be achieved between calibers. Sure if you're young and you believe the marketing hype and want to buy a whole new gun that shoots a whole new cartridge which is much more expensive go ahead.

The problem is that there are more and more UA-cam greats who really aren't the smartest, but who believe they have to impress everyone with their wisdom. The thing about the twist is true. Older guns usually have too much twist for bullets with good BC, but that can be corrected in new guns or new barrels. The story of higher performance at lower pressure, longer barrel life and lower recoil definitely doesn't add up at all. Objectively speaking, the .30-06 is and remains a very valid cartridge due to its balance, for example for Central European hunting conditions where shooting is not too long (< 350 yd), but where larger game in the elk class are also hunted. At these distances, only mid-range cartridges come into question and it would be absolute nonsense to use magnum cartridges with all their negative side effects. And the .30-06 also has sufficient powder chamber to bring even heavy bullets with good BC to acceptable velocities. Compared to a 6.5 Creedmoor, the .30-06 has a energy advantage at the muzzle of approx. 750 ft lbf and this benefit will definitely be noticeable, especially at rather short ranges and heavy game.

      Sorry, the wording was misleading.
English is not my native language.
I meant that the twist rate is too slow.
That means, that the rifling length in which the bullet will spin one revolution is too long.

Even at $1 a shot, if you get 2,000 rounds out of a barrel you’ve spent $2,000 on ammunition. If you can find $2,000+ for ammo, you can find $400 for a new barrel down the line. $2,000 in ammo is a very LOW estimate.

      @DesertRunninOutdoors  15 днів тому +1

Eh, you don’t need to be burning barrels all the time to be proficient at the 500-650 neighborhood with modern equipment. I consider 500 yards easy now days assuming you’re steady, not a lot of wind, etc.
I think 200 rounds in simulated hunting scenarios out to 600 yards is far more valuable than 1,000 rounds of the bunch shooting 100 yard groups for hunting. 200 rounds out of a particular rifle a year is pretty solid for the average hunter, and it would still take you over 10 years to burn a barrel unless you abuse the life out of it.

I mean it really depends on the field position and the overall scenario. I can tell you I’m probably not taking a 500 yard shot while I’m out of breath and have very little time to get comfortable and I’m shooting off a tree. I will take a 500 yard shot if the animal has no clue we’re there, I can get on the bipods with a rear rest, the angle is good, there’s little to no wind, etc.
But again, it goes back to what kind of time you spend shooting your rifle. I make roughly 1 actual range trip to confirm zero and the rest is spent in hunting type terrain out of different positions learning to where I am / am not effective. Most guys don’t do that, the ones you remember being able to count on your hand, likely did.
I’m not saying guys who shoot a box a year can make a 500 yard shot off their pack because they have a fancy rifle, I’m saying 500 yards is not a tough shot FOR modern equipment in the right hands, in the right scenario. I wouldn’t dream of taking a 500 shot with the .243 I shot as a kid. I can shoot 500 yards with my eyes closed with my 300 win mag the way it’s setup.
