That big ass Camaro only pulls away in the straight. But when it comes to the technical zone that RS1600 is all over him! Fantastic sound! Great driving skills for all drivers! Thanks for posting!
I probably saw this on the BBC in '71....fantastic days for Motorsport....more action in 15 laps than a whole season of F1....and those engine sounds!!
OMFG, That makes me feel old. My father helped run the Wiggins Teape Paperchase, I have some pics of a meet at the Palace, Same Era, that I took on a box brownie as a kid, and i've met most of the said drivers. Many Many Thanks
Just enjoyed watching this again. What really impresses me are the tremendous driving skills displayed by messrs Thomas, Crabtree and Marshall. After 15 laps of door handle to door handle scrapping I don't think there was once any contact between them at any point in the race.
OMG I love it! I used to got to Brands Hatch mostly, but the saloons were always a favorite. And I remember seeing Dave Brodie in his black 'Run Baby Run' Escort beat a Camaro 'without' having it crash. This is still edge of the seat stuff to watch. Thanks for sharing. A total favorite.
Great credit must go to Marshall, Thomas and Crabtree for the way they drove in that race. These three guys were basically national/club level drivers yet they displayed remarkable skill in that fantastic battle. After 15 laps of bumper to bumper and sometimes door handle to door handle racing they I don't think they touched once. Superb.
I've lost count of the times I have watched this. So many enjoyable aspects. The Boss mustang incidently was raced in this event for the first time by Martin Burrane. He went onto many wins after this. The health and safety beaks killed this type of racing. Doing the same to this country to this day.
I've seen this video many times and it never fails to make me smile, this kind of racing is just so entertaining and exciting, it really looks like the drivers are pushing the cars to the limit and such a wonderful variety of cars on the track make it so interesting to watch. I really wish there was more racing like this today.
i saw this race when i was 8 years old, it made me want to get an escort, ten years later in 1982 i bought a 71 rs1600 and have it to this day, it goes great, but i cant get it to handle like that!
what a beut RS1600 sounds like a DFV on the straights best sounding engine by farrrrrrrr wonder if my ol mexico x flow at 8500-9000 rpm would sound that good great nostalgic video cheers for posting
I was actually there at that meeting.I haven't seen a better race since.Shame the circuit was closed down, but these cars were literally racing 15ft from people's back gardens!!
Fantastic racing!! I wish they would race the classics more often. The Aussies race classics in Touring Car Masters following the V8 Supercar schedule, but the big Mustangs, Camaros and Falcons dont have any competition from smaller cars like the Porches that race.
Thankyou for your memories,I guess your Dad had a hard time sharing service crew!.I have simular memories from the 70's to mid 80's,my Dad was a Stage Rallying man,Escort Lotus Twincam in the early days,(BDA's were to big budget).Staying in a Caravan, waking to see frost outside nearly everytime we camped(funny what we remember!).I can still smell the Castrol R & hear the BDA's in full cry deep in the forestry, well before you could see them!.What a glorious time we had.Mark
Fabulous racing. Love the noise of Thomas's V8 Camaro. I was stood at North Tower that day so this brings back some lovely memories of the Palace. I might be wrong but I have a vague memory that Mike Crabtree was disqualified after the race for an infringement of some sort and big Gerry announced the winner ?? 100 Sporting Moments also featured a 1970 F3 race at the Palace in which a certain James Hunt thumps Dave Morgan after being taken out on the last corner.
Wooooooo!! That's the sort of stuff to get the old adrenaline up!!!!! Absolutely fantastic! I was actually looking for Dave Brodie racing against a camaro. He had a black MK1 Escort with Run Baby Run painted on the back of boot lid. (trunk lid) And beat a 5lts Camaro around Brands Hatch. Can't rem the year, but I was there! Epic memories! Thanx for uploading.
I walked the park a couple of weeks ago, and if you didn't know motor racing was held here once you wouldn't have a clue because there are hardly any signs of its past racing history, apart from the corners there is nothing, but still it was kind of spooky knowing of the big Camaros and drivers like Clark and Rindt bombing round here!!!
superb !!!,i saw frank gardner in a later camaro in the race of the champions at brands hatch around that time !!,i love the v8,s, but christ those little 1600 escorts dont half ave it !!!
Really enjoyed that. Not often I watch eight minutes straight but as the owner of a Camaro and a Porsche can appreciate both aspects of the drivers and the cars... Roll forward to today. What would happen between a 2010 Camaro SS and a Ford Focus STI???
Excellent racing. The classic big car/ small car battle. Note the great driving without body contact for the most part. I could make some idiotic statement on one side or the other about my favorite car, but can't this race be appreciated for what it is? Lots to be learned by watching.
Great racing action. How often do we see cars disappearing behind trees on today`s tracks. I walked the track when I went to a concert in the park in `73 the tyre marks on the track and advertising banners were still there.
Absolutely brilliant. Gerry Marshall, what a legend. Hats off to Martin Thomas for taking victory in a 1600. Great stuff!
amazing video, shows golden era of racing. It's very thrilling ! Oldschool Fords Escorts&Capris will be never beaten !
I cant stop watching this..brilliant, Viva,Escort versus the mighty Camaro ..thats real action.
Indeed it's got everything, truly iconic classic cars, tight racing with good manners and Murray Walker on the commentary.. thanks for your comment

What a scintillating scrap! Thank you for uploading it.

The little escort reminds me of a wee terrier snapping at the heels of a big rotwieler.
Awesome racing!!!
Fantastic race !! I worked with Mike Crabtree in the early 90's, He's an absoloute gent as well as being a good driver !
What a race! A joy for eye's and Ears! Such a shame they closed 'the Palace.
Perfectly balanced race... Powerful but cumbersome Camaro, nimble but less powerful Viva and the Escort in the middle... More of the same please!
Now THAT.. is motorsport.
So intense, thanks for sharing that with us :D
Amazing to watch.
Racing nowadays is like watching scalextric.
Just a fantastic, classic racing battle!!
Fantastic Racing, that RS1600 sounded Wicked.
48 years ago and still brilliant.
Absolutely.. no silly driving aids just pure man and machine
This its a piece of auto history, ty for sharing MK, 5 stars.
wish we could see racing classes like that today.
Isn't youtube amazing? i was thinking about this the other day after a conversation with a youngster about Vivas. Superb.
Love it ...Thanks for posting it what driving and love the cars
Amazing racing. Thank God I'm old enough to have seen things like this live.
Awesome and what a Murraytastic comentary.
this is one of the best races ever
This is the most awesome thing Ive ever seen!!
I knew there was a reason why I favourited this years ago. What a fantastic race!
Brings back memories of my 1600 pushrod Mk 1 Escort
truly exciting race! somthin'special 'bout dez ol'cars & era...
top stuff! remember seeing this on "100 great sporting moments" on the BBC years back
6.0 litre Camaro vs 1600 BDA Escort, wow, wish i was around then to watch that sort of racing.
I've lost count of the times I have watched this. So many enjoyable aspects. The Boss mustang incidently was raced in this event for the first time by Martin Burrane. He went onto many wins after this. The health and safety beaks killed this type of racing. Doing the same to this country to this day.
absolutely superb, i look forward to seeing some more
I was there that day, it was Crystal Palace racing at it's best!
I've been looking for this for a while - beats just about anything for a decent race
Superb race, thanks for sharing.
What superb racing.
Great race. That was so polite of the driver the signal left so far ahead of his turn... lololololz
my all time hero, no concept of fear and seldom sober

WOW! What a great race it was
I've got a massive smile on my face. As Murray would say FAAAAN-TASTIC!!!!
Speaking of Murray, he hasn't changed a bit (spin! spin! spin! XD)
wow what a race that was, bring back crystal palace race track.
Excellent videos, thank you.
Good heavens, what a race. Mike Crabtree was outstanding int his thriller
Really enjoyed that. Thanks for posting.
What a stunning piece of motor racing!
Most awesome racing ever.
Best...racing...video...ever! Thanks for posting this.
must of been an awesome race to be at, good to see the 1600 BDA take the win
In 1971 the BBC was still making a few b&w programmes with its older equipment.
what a beut RS1600 sounds like a DFV on the straights best sounding engine by farrrrrrrr wonder if my ol mexico x flow at 8500-9000 rpm would sound that good great nostalgic video cheers for posting
Some great racing on a great track, fantastic, made my day seeing this!!
Pure racing. I love it :)
My dad was born this year.
The Marshall Vauxhall lives on too! It was recently auctioned by Bonhams.
I was actually there at that meeting.I haven't seen a better race since.Shame the circuit was closed down, but these cars were literally racing 15ft from people's back gardens!!

Marshall in the Viva was quite ballsy round the corners but lacked straight line speed... wow that Escort sounded great...
wow what a race!!!!!!!!!!
Great stuff! Thanks for posting.

Epic. Thank you. My old boss in third as well. Take the downforce off, and who then needs engine parity, brilliant...
Great video, thanks.
Gerry Marshal, the greatest driver ever
Wooooooo!!
That's the sort of stuff to get the old adrenaline up!!!!!

Oops! Apparently Run Baby Run was on the front!!
And it was 1985.
Great stuff...
Close up racing indeed. Cant wait until you got those other videos uploaded.
DAMN a 6.0L carb car vs a 2.5L injected car vs a DOHC 1.6 injected car. Holy shit I want to be part of that racing.
Amazing! that's the idea... unfortunately, lost, these days in the 21th century...
just great...
thanks for posting
glad you enjoyed it
