Tip: When you add real coal to any tender use clingfilm to line the tender, push the coal in to fill the space and then add your PVA.
No leakage of PVA anywhere and the coal load is removable.

Lovely locos, saw them as a boy, they were lively performers. Crews loved the enclosed cabs during winter.
I’d love one! Thanks for sharing

    Hi Lewis
I for one really appreciate the time you take to produce top quality content & having them narrated as you do makes it even more enjoyable
I really do miss your original layout as that’s the one I first came across your channel
Have you any plans to redevelop some of it as that makes for entertaining content the way in which you go about creating a new scene
Anyway Fella thanks for taking the time to film edit & upload 👍

Thanks John, appreciate it! I would love to redevelop that layout, but realistically I’m not there enough to justify it. If I could, I’d redo the whole thing as double track.

I like your layout - you've done a good job there. The engine looks pretty good too; my yardstick is the Bachmann model, and this looks its equal. Much, much better than the original Hornby 2MT.
One of these little engines was actually the .last steam loco I saw working on the Trent Valley / North Stafford main line at Colwich in the early 70s', en route to a display at Stoke, I think. Happy memories

I wish I would have waited for this one instead of buying the Bachmann one. I've got nothing against my Bachmann version but, it's a really poor Runner, stalls on some of my points and doesn't like slow speed running (Creeping) I have fitted a stay alive to mine now, and I must say, she now runs like a dream.

They should fit those stay alives to new locos as standard I reckon!

One of the most useful locos in 12"/ft scale too. 78018 and 78019 are regular performers at the GCR along with 46521 (currently undergoing overhaul) which was certainly where much of the basis for the BR 2MT was taken from

DELAYS DUE TO BATCH PRODUCTION METHODS & MODERN MARKETING !
The timing of both Hornby & Bachmann products between announcement & arrival a few years later, is complex. Hornby's locomotives & rolling stock, (but not track or accessories) are actually made in the PIKO (ex East German model train manufacturer) who have a new plant near Canton PRC. While Bachmann is part of the larger KADA Corporation, who also now own the 4 huge Sandakan plants in Hong Kong. All these plants work to the Japanese style "Batch Production" method. Which means contracted batches of each model have to be given "time slots" well in advance of production. Which sets the actual batch quantity in stone, years before the actual production. But means little Warehousing is needed, saving the producer lots of money. As each complete batch is simply shipped immediately it rolls off the production line !!
Announcements of new models years in advance, is designed to allow people like yourself the opportunity to order in advance. In the knowledge that if you don't, you may NOT actually get a model, once the shops allocation is exhausted. This all means that the limited number to be produced in each batch, can be more effectively pre-sold ! Virtually guaranteeing Hornby/Bachmann have already sold out of each "batch" by the time it actually reaches the shops.
In other words "Batch Production" helps create "Panic Buying", leading to increasing demand, meaning larger "batches" & everyone in the chain from producer to the retailer, gets their money back plus profit rapidly. The huge increase in "Online Internet buying" at the expense of traditional High Street Retailers, also speeds up the "Money go round" when using Batch Production. This is the main reason for the "fictitious" estimated arrival schedules found on shop websites & in the modelling press, because the retailers & modelling press are not told the real expected arrival dates.
    HOWEVER !!
Some unforeseen delays to Hornby deliveries can result from PIKO ensuring their own PIKO model batches go out on time. Bachmann's plants also produce one or two of the Gigantic Japanese company ranges. Those Japanese companies have rigid financial penalty clauses, for every days delay to any batches arrival in Japan. Hence "Bachmann" put their own products on the "back burner" to avoid delaying the Japanese. Unlike Dapol who use a British owned companies small plant in Hong Kong for some of their products (mainly locomotives), with fewer unforseen delays, and somewhat shorter lead times !

    Good evening gentleman !
About your engine running slowly, it is more of a bonus than anything else with UK engines. Compared to my HO German and Italian engines, UK OO ones seems to always run twice the speed at the same throttle setting.
Yours seems to have a correct engine, Adi Pulen had to return his own due to a faulty motor.
I'm interested in this engine but, at the present price, that would be a no-go. I'm specially interested to put her side by side with my Roco BR 24, a tender engine with the same wheel configuration...
By the way, my Roco model was priced 264€/GBP 228, more expensive than this one (priced GBP 197 at Hattons), maybe I would consider buying her, but not this month surely.

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  11 місяців тому

Thanks Olivier. Hopefully they’ll be discounted in a few months so more people can pick one up. Given Accurascale are producing and selling steam locos for £50 less, you can’t help but feel a bit mugged off paying over £200 for this…

Hi Lewis, lovely stuff as always. Gear ratio sounds interesting, any idea what the figures are? My dad had 40-1 gears on all his locos that he built. I fully agree with you, if they would gear down so that top speed was no more than the maximum of the real thing wouldn't that be amazing! lord knows what the ratio would be then 100-1 lol? I really like these but I just can't justify the cost now I'm retired. Cheers Mike

Nos. 78018 and 78019 are preserved, they're the only two members of the class to survive if I'm correct. Your model is beautiful. Yes, those pipes at the front aren't perfectly balanced, but who's perfect? Loved the archive footage you found. What else will you uncover as your collection grows? Clean the engine's wheels with cotton buds, you get better results. The track can be cleaned using one of two items: track rubber or Dapol Track Vacuum Cleaner. The track cleaner is useful for cleaning the track in places where you can't can't reach. Or maybe use both. I don't clean my track very often, once a month is the norm.
