Adjustable Upper Control Arm Installation: Infiniti/Nissan

- Here's how to install adjustable upper control arms on an Infiniti or Nissan.
When a vehicle's suspension is modified or out of alignment, adjustable suspension components must be installed to bring the vehicle's tires back into alignment.
Notably on vehicles with double-wishbone front suspension, the lower control arm sits at an angle when the vehicle is lowered. The upper control arm follows that angle, causing the steering knuckle to pivot outward. This is called a camber angle change, which can cause excessive tire wear on the inside edges of the tire.
To combat this, an adjustable upper control arm, of which the ball joint can slide outward is installed to bring the tire contact back perpendicular to the road surface. The upper control arm also has caster angle adjustability.
In this video, adjustable upper control arms are installed onto an Infiniti G37x. The procedure is the same for the Infiniti G35, G35x, G37, EX35, G25, M35, M45, Q50, Q60 and Nissan 350Z and 370Z.
The upper control arm is held on by a 14mm pinch bolt and two 14mm bushing bolts. To free the rear bushing bolt, depending on the suspension installed, the coilover must be unbolted from the strut tower, and the lower control arm either pried down or jacked up to get the bolt to clear the spring. The same trick works to reinstall the bolt.
Adjustments to the new control arm are controlled by a caster plate (which is rotated in 12 different positions) and a ball joint that slides on a track. The ball joint is positioned roughly where the OEM control arm ball joint is (a measurement from the bushing to ball joint distance will confirm this initially) and the ball joint nut secures it in place.
Once installed onto the vehicle, the wheel is installed and the vehicle can be put on an alignment rack. The caster is controlled by moving the ball joint outward/inward, then the 27mm nut is snugged. On lowered vehicles, final adjustment torque must be achieved with the control arm loosed away from the knuckle, since a torque wrench cannot clear the fender to torque it to 120 ft-lb.
The upper control arms used in this video were from Mevotech, part numbers CMS301148 and CMS301147.
That toothbrush is gonna becoming more legendary than ChrisFix's soapy water
Lol
Fame is the game
Where do the bumpstops go ? Wish you included that
8:11 your poor brother 😂😂
Could you give an update since the video is 2 years old? Many other company loom cheap and this one look good.
It's still on the car and it's my brother's daily. No issues
@@speedkar99 they seems well build. I mean I was looking for other models but everyone was saying they have noise issues after months...
I am grateful that your videos show you doing your work for the first time, and that you have NOT done a (complete) TRIAL RUN. Even though you are very mechanically inclined, you still run into problems that you must overcome. And you don't delete that portion of the video. THANK YOU for that. It gives hope to the rest of us.
Thanks, I learned that audience appreciates that from my honda ball joint video, I'll try to keep my fails going forward to teach the audience what not to do.
Any issues with these? I heard of premature wear on ball joints and issues with slippage as well.
the welds on the aftermarket part are big stress concentrations. OEM part has no sharp edges, looks like it was designed using finite element methods to maximize strength/weight. always a little sad to get a quality downgrade when replacing a part... but there is no OEM equivalent here...
Your right, except the aftermarket part is overdesigned, so while technically under heavy stress the welds are where it's not going to fail
Can you use those to fix your Camber after an accident where the wheel is tilted inward a little bit
Yes but that means something else bent
@@speedkar99 I think the upper control arm bracket is bent
beefy steel is worse than the light aluminium right
Depends how you look at it...if the OE is using aluminum then the forces aren't great enough to justify the steel, although the steel is technically stronger
You explained that on an Collegiate level well done.. I almost felt smart listening to you 🤓
Is this aftermarket modification only used on an Infiniti G or Z when the car is lowered? Will this correct the camber on a 2005 G35 that is not lowered? My camber is not running at a straight flat run utilizing the entire flat surface of the tire. Your feedback will be highly appreciated. Thanks
Yes this will help with the known camber issues of the Z / G35 platform
I had to get these for my car and I am stock height stock everything not lowered. 2dr fyi
Is that your brothers toothbrush also? Poor guy. 😁
camber bolt installed upside down fyi
Thanks
I have a 07 mercedes e550 n my driver's side wheel is pushed inward could it be the upper control arm? If so do they have the adjustable control arms 4 Mercedes-Benz
Pushed outward relative to the other side? Or to the fender? Either way take the car for an alignment and check if anything is bent.
I was hesitant about doing this myself. But after watching your video Im ready to do this! Originally I paid a shop to put on aftermarket adjustable camber arms, but now the bushings have gone bad, so this time I want to do this myself. Your video is clear about doing it including the issue with the 2 bolts on the arm hinge by coilover. Thanks!
I'm glad it helped you. What arms are you using on your G37?
@@speedkar99 , SPC Eibach Arms. Ill have to get a press at AutoZone to push out old bearings. Now I see why people just replace the entire arms. 😂
hope our brother doesnt get killed one day from all your interventions
Hahaha I hope not but at least he will get payback
I wish you make your video little bit longer to catch up information obviously. we are appreciate
Thanks for the suggestion but I don't want to make it long and boring for other viewers
toothbrush!!!
Gotta love it
Fortune favors the bold not brave
Ok
Does g37x and g37 use the same upper control arm? Awd and rwd? Thanks for any reply
Upper yes. Lower is different
Happy to see somebody else uses Mevotech parts! Great stuff!
IS SPC
please do a mechanical review on this car!
I did. Check out my Q50 review.
nice! i subscribed to you long time back. always liked your videos it was untill this video where i realized you're from Ontario!
I'm here from AB! 👋
WTF no one notice the washer under the adjusting nut does not even
fit the ball joint stud diameter ?
Makes Sense thanks for the reply.......
Thanks for the tip
My upper ball joint won't seat properly in the steering knuckle 🤦🏾♂️
It might need the persuation hammer
How have the mevotech control arms held up(ball joints and overall build)? I heard they are rebranded spc arms. I'm looking at their adjustable ones for the gs300.
They held up great, it's only been a few months
8:09 Yo what the heck, no wonder my car's pulling to the left
Haha sorry bro
I dont really care !!! Hahaha Good video :) thanks
It's my brother's car
>Lowered Altima, waste of money.
Bruh, it's clearly a maxima
G37 is based on the FM platform, nothing to do with Altima and Maxima
I like to watch your videos, you're so funny
Funny? How so...I'm just being myself 😁
Good video but! You should tighten this type of suspenssion componenets under load ! this bushings require it !!!!!! this ball joint had to be tighten under load too..
Hey how do you find EWD and workshop manuals for a car? Can they be found online? I am working on a 2004 KIA Optima, and those manuals would be super helpful.
All data or Google search
Toyota has TIS techinfo website, maybe Kia has something similar.
Thanks for the leads! The All data website looks promising, and I just found Kia's KGIS website.
I Really appreciate your videos btw! Your work ethic really shines through!
Ah man, my bad I have 09M35HR7AT
i really need 2 figure this out ☹️🤦🏻♂️
Do you have to preload the bolts?
Today you didn't use your brothers frozen underware😂😂
Because on this day it was summer hot
Can’t believe you put the nut on upside down and completed the install. The washer will just move to where you tightened it up
Which nut? The ball joint?
Compare 3.50 to 5.54
Cheers to the toothbrush 🤣 Subbed. 👍
Thanks
Can the alignment shop adjust the camber while the wheels are still on?
They are supposed to but on these it's a bit tricky because at suspension height, it's tight against the fender liner.
so I just installed these control arms along with all other control arms and coilovers on my 03 g35. im having some issues with my caster being off. other than that, everything is great. upper control arm quality seems good so far.
Yep, these arms are working great, thanks
Any update? What about bushing and balljoint?
I see the prelloads on bolts ❤
I have the same issue on my infiniti qx70...after lowering the car both front and back wheels have this angle issue.
What do you recommend for the back wheels
Ding Ding Ding, Thumbs Up! Thank you!
Your welcome
I just got these put on. I first put all 4 lowers and tried to align it but they said they couldn’t get the front camber right. I put these same upper mevos on with a new rack and outers and now my car just better than it ever has!
Yep the adjustable uppers help alot with the camber!
i have these just waiting to put them on. Ive had alot of front inner tire wear being lowered. The rears have actually been fine. Summer tires arent cheap!
My 350z shakes steering wheel and makes a noticeable clunking noise that seems to be coming from the drivers footwell possibly coming from the front suspension, it also pulls to the side , I went to an alignment shop and they told me the front right caster was off and that I would need to get a set of these adjustable control arms to correct it, what is the difference in replacing it with an OEM pair so I can get it back to stock specs as opposed to going aftermarket?
Should I just stick with 0 degrees of caster?
Go with the manufacturer spec
Preciate the video mane! Ordering my SPC Fronts as we speak!
Awesome. Make sure you get an alignment unlike my brother haha
Where can I buy this lower and upper arm?
Rockauto
Nut round wrong way
How so?
speedkar99 notice the washer is to big for the bolt it’s because the nut goes the other way so it sits inside the washer get me ?
And before you take it apart it was the correct way
next review, aftermarket upper control arm, suspension and shock absorbers for 4x4 vehicles like the Toyota Hilux
Assalamualaikum
Hey thanks for watching 😁
Nice toothbrush
Say it aint so. Am i being grace by another of your video after 2 week of hiatus? Lol :-)
I've been waiting longer for him to actually do the vid so I can finally go for an alignment ;)
Go for your alignment now bro
Hey I'm trying to keep the videos going!
Why didn’t you install the bumper spacers?
100K soon man, great video!
Thanks, yup I'm looking forward to it
Nice video just installed some on my g35 major fail... When I turn my steering wheel I hear clunking noise
What brand
Z1
Did you ever figure it out?
Yes me and my guy had them on the wrong sides. left was on the right and vise versa
Question,
Did you ever have A issue with the upper arm hitting the car frame ?
Got mine today! Looks a lot like spc control arms. Quick question can you use thread lock for the ball joint ?
And what’s the purpose of bump stop? Where does it go
Yes you can.
Did you get Mevotech parts?
speedkar99 no i got spc but they look exactly the same!
good job thanks
Your welcome
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
First!
Thanks for being #1
Hey I have a question if you dont mind
I have an answer if you don't mind
I would have pushed it all the way to the outside ,
These look cheap to me really
Ah they felt pretty strong compared to OE
Is the same for spc control arms?
Yes
No need of any lube for that adjusting area?
No, there's enough slack in there already
speedkar99 thanks for the info... :)
Very good video. Thank you!
You are welcome. Have you lowered your G/Z?
3rd
Wow your fast to respond
👍
Are upper control arm the same for g37 coupe?
What about rear wheel alignment?
See my suspension rebuild video on this G37. We put in some adjustable rear links and bolts.
@@speedkar99 I searched your Playlist and I don't see it
Very informative video 👌🏽
Thanks
Extremely helpful vid thx for the help!
What brand is the UCA?
how do I buy this?
Wow
How well did these hold up?
Still on the car today
why bother its a nissan. junk it or buy a moped. good video otherwise.
True. But it's not my car.
I use to do all this dumb crap to my cars....then I decided to buy a real car
Driving a chevrolet is worst than driving a Kia. You would look better on a 🚲
