It's absolutely amazing how much Kirk's "I need my pain" speech aides the impact of his speech in Undiscovered Country. Kirk's always taken the deaths of those under his command or his protection to heart and used the pain to ground himself. Dr. McCoy knew this well enough during Search for Spock. Kirk turns death into a fighting chance for life. It's why Kirk is a great character and why nobody can really beat William Shatner's portrayal of the daring captain.
Kirk's speach at the end of "The Omega Glory" has been one of my favorites. He basically says that unless freedom applies to everyone, it's meaningless.
My fav Kirk speech without doubt is the speech at the end of Wrath of Khan & imo it has no equal & still bring a tear to my eye esp with Amazing Grace playing in the background, soul stirring.
Some people hate the bigotry doesn't belong on the bridge comment and say it doesn't belong anywhere. Which is what Kirk is saying. You want to be a bigot? Go do it in your room. Stay home. You want to do your job? You want to play with others? Then lose it. Plus it was the 60's. Anyone say there was a place bigotry didn't belong anywhere was huge.
Human society will always have its bigots. What we must avoid is equating being a bigot to having standards of behavior and decorum. Without such standards, there can be no society.
It's a great line and it totally belongs but for someone to say that it shouldn't exist in the future doesn't understand the point. Like any human emotion, it resides in us and we can not be separated from us by an outside force. Hell, even Vulcans with their supposed superior logic fall prey to the notion that those who don't think like a Vulcan are lesser. Kirk didn't ask the impossible, just for a sailor to do his duty and be a dick on his own time.
NotJeff here. The greatest, also from A Taste of Armageddon: "It's instinctive. But the instinct can be fought. We're human beings with the blood of a million savage years on our hands, but we can stop it. We can admit that we're killers, but we're not going to kill today. That's all it takes. Knowing that we won't kill today. Contact Vendikar. I think you'll find that they're just as terrified, appalled, horrified as you are, that they'll do anything to avoid the alternative I've given you. Peace or utter destruction. It's up to you. " I've thought about that speech a lot in this past year.
Spock's obituary only at no. 8? How dare you? I'm convinced Shatner was fighting actual tears when his voice trembled before saying "..human", because it was so well written.
I have taken into heart his "I dont want my pain to go away, I NEED my pain" speech from ST5. It's my favorite scene in that movie and my fave Kirk speech of all time.
Picard has a semi-sequel to that speech in Nemesis, when he's asking Data whether Picard, himself, would be the same man if he'd lived Shinzon's life instead. It's one of the rare moments where Picard is shown to be unsure of himself, and I love the back-and-forth between him and Data. It's definitely something to ponder, once in a while...
It reminds me of a fantastic quote from a book called Diary. "It is hard to forget the pain, harder still to remember the sweetness. For we have no scars from when we are happy. And we learn so little from peace".
I think what Kirk said in reply to Sarek's query about the price paid being "Your ship... Your son...?" should have been in there Kirk: If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul
I always liked the "Don't let them promote you." It perfectly showed how much he regretted becoming an admiral, and how hard it was to get out of being one. Besides, it justified the TNG movies, lol.
I know we were never going to get two entries from the same movie, but I always liked Wrath of Khan's "We tried it once your way, Khan, are you game for a rematch? Khan. I'm laughing at the superior intellect."
Kirk's greatest speech came just after the cameras stopped rolling, in Star Trek 4, where he addressed the Federation Council and demanded that Section 31 not be allowed to prevent Worf, the greatest poker player ever, from winning a hand ever again after, "The Emissary."
Mirror, Mirror should definitely have been included. "The illogic of waste, Mr. Spock. A waste of lives, potential, resources, time.I submit to you that your empire is illogical because it cannot endure. I submit that you are illogical to be a willing part of it. ... In every revolution, there's one man with a vision." Another contender from that episode is, "Spock, you traitorous pig! I'll hang you up by your Vulcan ears! I'll have you all executed!"
@TrekCulture son I have seen all the episodes I'm 61 been a fan all my life but only the original series picard for me is annoying with his make it so. But yes clips of Kirk's speeches would have been the cherry on top also a private little war was more Vietnam not Korean war
The Ultimate Computer: . 'All I ask is a tall ship, and a star to steer by'. You could feel the wind at your back in those days. The sounds of the sea beneath you. And even if you take away the wind and the water, it's still the same. The ship is yours. You can feel her. And the stars are still there, Bones.
I need my pain was an awesome and powerful speech. Of all of Kirk's moments, I loved this one the most. Too bad the movie wasn't that great, but that speech . . . was incredible!
thanks for including the reveal of the "undertaker" in WWF... totally matched the awe of this film with what was going on in my WWF fan life as well... so lost in throwbacks right now! lol ...
I was surprised at number 10 being "that's why we are aboard her", (one of my favorite's) but after listening to the other 9, I understood. Sean you have a way of helping me and I am sure others relive those days in such a meaningful wonder. I truly believe Star Trek to be one of the best Tv. movie, animated series of all time. You show such passion for this franchise it re-awakens my passion on each and every video you post. Thank you for yet another great trip down memory lane.
Brilliant works Sean. Great presentation well performed as well. Thank you for your work and all Work of Trek culture the whole team well done indeed bring back. Great memories. Thanks for the fun until next time you are appreciated. Don’t forget that that’s all for now.
My favorite quote from Star Trek is when Kirk said out the souls I have met in my travels his was the most human I cried like a baby it still gets to me when I watch star Trek 2 it makes me think of my grandparents that have passed
@@Rocketsong You can watch Patrick Stewart in a television production of Macbeth and a television production of Hamlet with David Tennant ( the Doctor from Dr Who ). Look for them. Both amazingly good. ❤️
Thank you for that wonderful video. 🙏 These are a lot of very good and impressive speeches and it‘s hard to choose a favourite one. Mine is „I need my pain. From my point of view it is an important part of what makes us human. Sometimes it‘s hard to bear but without my pain I would never be the person I am.
I rank this bit from "The Corbomite Maneuver" slightly higher than the one cited: "What's the mission of this vessel, Doctor? To seek out and contact alien life, and an opportunity to demonstrate what our high-sounding words mean. Any questions?"
Nice nod to Star Trek V, Mr. Ferrick. Thanks for this one. Appreciate it. Captain James Tiberius Kirk remains Starfleet's & Star Trek's Best & Greatest Captain. 🖖 And, Yes, Star Trek VI is also my absolute fave Star Trek film. My faves from this list are: The "Risk is our business" speech from Return to Tomorrow, and Jim's "Don't let them promote you" entreaty to Picard in Star Trek: Generations. A speech that should've made the list: Capt. Kirk's speech regarding the American Constitution in "The Omega Glory". (Btw, "A Private Little War", like "A Taste of Armageddon", was an analogy to the war at the time in Viet Nam).
Nice video. Good choices and good comments. I appreciate that you couldn't use the actual clip with Kirk speaking, but perhaps you should have made that clear in your opening. But then, we can probably all hear his voice speaking the words anyway.
Fun fact: “the end of history” was a very popular political science book by Francis Fukuyama about the end of the Cold War. A very on-the-nose reference in STVI
One speech that could have been mentioned is a second one from "A Taste of Armageddon. " Shortly after the "Neat and Painless " speech came the "We're Not Going to Kill Today " speech.
5:44 now that was a surprise to see from a German standpoint XD - but let me tell you a bit here: many movies about the GDR should be titled: "this was not truly how it was like" XD
Some do, but the wise know that with freedom comes accountability. That being said, we must also remember that open disagreement is the most common springboard of useful change. Saying what we think must be allowed lest we all become afraid to think, with tyranny and stagnation the inevitable results.
I feel like this list is backwards. "Risk is our business..", Kirk's eulogy, and "You've made war neat and painless..." are easily the most iconic in the entire franchise. But you put them last...?
Was it a Very Hot Day when You Recorded this ! I HAD TO STOP THIS AND WALK AWAY a FEW TIMEs BECAUSE OF THE TWO Mountain s Under the White Mist ! ? your t ~ shirt ;
“Alright, it’s instinctive. But the instinct can be fought. We’re human beings with the blood of a million savage years on our hands. But we can stop it. We can admit that we’re killers, but we’re not going to kill today. That’s all it takes. Knowing that we’re not going to kill today!” A Taste of Armageddon.
"Risk is our business!" is my favorite. But "His was the most...human" still makes me tear up 42 years later.
When he just brought it up, it still brought tears to me.
It's absolutely amazing how much Kirk's "I need my pain" speech aides the impact of his speech in Undiscovered Country. Amen
Kirk's speach at the end of "The Omega Glory" has been one of my favorites. He basically says that unless freedom applies to everyone, it's meaningless.
That speech should be number 1!
Had a commander tell us in 1980 to leave our bigotry in our quarters it had no place on the bridge ( on a destroyer).
Well he was clearly a star trek fan 😊😊😊
Kirk's: "I've given you back the horrors of war" is IMO the absolute best of Kirk's soliloquies.
My fav Kirk speech without doubt is the speech at the end of Wrath of Khan & imo it has no equal & still bring a tear to my eye esp with Amazing Grace playing in the background, soul stirring.

Yea, someone remembered the Weren't going to kill today speech.
Spock's obituary only at no. 8? How dare you? I'm convinced Shatner was fighting actual tears when his voice trembled before saying "..human", because it was so well written.
Hear, hear. It was well written and well delivered.
I have heard that when they were filming this and the death scene that they believed they were playing those roles for the last time.
Eh, while the emotions are great, the words seems a bit insulting to Vulcans overall.
@jimskywaker4345 what ???????
And he acted the absolute hell out of it
"What does God need with a starship?" - James Tiberius Kirk
Yes, one of his best lines in my opinion.
This line and the line McCoy says, I don't believe in a god that inflicts pain. That actually set me on my course away from organized religion
I have taken into heart his "I dont want my pain to go away, I NEED my pain" speech from ST5. It's my favorite scene in that movie and my fave Kirk speech of all time.
Same here. Made a huge difference in my life.
It was the outstanding moment of awesome in an otherwise troubled movie.
So many people tell you to let the pain go, I believe in remembering the lessons pain teaches which is Kirk’s point.
Picard has a semi-sequel to that speech in Nemesis, when he's asking Data whether Picard, himself, would be the same man if he'd lived Shinzon's life instead. "I need my pain!" is my favorite Kirk line. My pain is what makes me. It is who I am. He truly said what I've been thinking my entire life.
it just guts me the way Kirks voice cracks when he says "human"
I think what Kirk said in reply to Sarek's query about the price paid being "Your ship... Your son...?" should have been in there
Kirk: If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul
Did you just casually quote The Man of La Mancha? Nicely done!
"You've managed to kill just about everyone else, but like a poor marksman, you keep...missing...the target."
Kirk's greatest speech came just after the cameras stopped rolling, in Star Trek 4, where he addressed the Federation Council and demanded that Section 31 not be allowed to prevent Worf, the greatest poker player ever, from winning a hand ever again after, "The Emissary."
"Risk is a part of the game if you want to sit in that chair!" - Kirk, to Harriman...
I like the nod to "Dogma" with the inclusion of Alanis Morissette when you say "God". :D
Mirror, Mirror should definitely have been included. "The illogic of waste, Mr. Spock. A waste of lives, potential, resources, time.I submit to you that your empire is illogical because it cannot endure. I submit that you are illogical to be a willing part of it. ... Another contender from that episode is, "Spock, you traitorous pig! I'll hang you up by your Vulcan ears! I'll have you all executed!"
A TOS episode?!? Be still my heart!
That was awesome. Thank you for having something good to say about The Final Frontier. There is lots to like about this film.
Idk why I was expecting Captain Kirk clips, I guess thats on me
Honestly I was expecting the clips too lol
I guess it's a copyright thing.
@ probably
Watch the episodes. 🖖
@TrekCulture son I have seen all the episodes I'm 61 been a fan all my life but only the original series picard for me is annoying with his make it so. But yes clips of Kirk's speeches would have been the cherry on top also a private little war was more Vietnam not Korean war
"Would it have hurt us, I wonder, just to have gathered a few laurel leaves?" who mourns for adonais.
Interesting! I've always been interested in that line. For me, though, it's like a little afterthought - safe to say now that Apollo's gone. Still...
Love it. Although I think the Corbomite Maneuver quote should have been #1. As William Shatner would say, "This list has been sabo-taaa-ged."
I need my pain was an awesome and powerful speech. Of all of Kirk's moments, I loved this one the most. Too bad the movie wasn't that great, but that speech . . . was incredible!

I had to laugh out loud when you flashed pictures of Alanis Morissette, who, as we know, played God in the movie Dogma.
Kirk's speech at the end of Omega Glory should have been here. The words of the E Pleb Neesta r for all, not just the Yangs.
Everyone! Or they mean nothing!
'I need my pain' is metal af
My favorite quote from Star Trek is when Kirk said out the souls I have met in my travels his was the most human I cried like a baby it still gets to me when I watch star Trek 2 it makes me think of my grandparents that have passed
Thanks, T.C.!
I've read that A Private Little War was really a commentary on the Vietnam War.
Remember like Avery Brookes and Patrick Stewart, William Shatner had done Shakespeare plays....that teaches you to make a good speech.
Now that you've said that, I *really* want to see Shatner as King Lear...
I really hope somewhere out there is a good quality video of Brooks as Othello that will surface one of these days.
@@Rocketsong You can watch Patrick Stewart in a television production of Macbeth and a television production of Hamlet with David Tennant ( the Doctor from Dr Who ). Look for them. Both amazingly good. ❤️

You left out Mirror, Mirror. In every revolution, there is one man with a vision.
Star Trek Continues did a great job with that as well
Must be cold on that Holodeck
I was trying to ignore that but I noticed. LOL!
I saw W.o.K. in theatrical release. The audience was openly sobbing during Kirk's Most human speech.
Sean, you saying that STVI is your favorite got this video a like, and you another up.
Captain….. Kirk had the….. best…. Speeches…. Ever.
😂
Absolutely brilliant analysis, thank you..
I rank this bit from "The Corbomite Maneuver" slightly higher than the one cited: "What's the mission of this vessel, Doctor? To seek out and contact alien life, and an opportunity to demonstrate what our high-sounding words mean. Any questions?"
I remember watching Kirk’s speech at Spock’s Funeral………It was……..Perfect!
number 8 brings a tear no matter how many times you watch it -- regardless of knowing that wasnt really Spocks end
Nice nod to Star Trek V, Mr. Ferrick.
Thanks for this one. Appreciate it. Captain James Tiberius Kirk remains Starfleet's & Star Trek's Best & Greatest Captain. 🖖
And, Yes, Star Trek VI is also my absolute fave Star Trek film.
My faves from this list are:
The "Risk is our business" speech from Return to Tomorrow, and Jim's "Don't let them promote you" entreaty to Picard in Star Trek: Generations.

Capt. Kirk's speech regarding the American Constitution in "The Omega Glory".

I have had them all memorized for decades. I think I know more Kirk lines than Jesus's.
I think Kirk's final Captains Log in Star Trek 6 was his best speech.
"I need my pain" speech is my favorite
You missed the Mirror Universe speeches with Spock lol
Another good one.
The Greatest CANADIAN🍁 Starship Captain Ever 👊😊✊😆👌😆👍🍁🍁
6:45, This quote stands out for me.
Fun fact: “the end of history” was a very popular political science book by Francis Fukuyama about the end of the Cold War. A very on-the-nose reference in STVI
Perfect shirt for this video topic!
Great list, i put wrath of khan as my fave og crew movies but for sure undiscovered country is next.
He was the most human, that's why we played Amazing Grace at this funeral.
One speech that could have been mentioned is a second one from "A Taste of Armageddon. " Shortly after the "Neat and Painless " speech came the "We're Not Going to Kill Today " speech.
And HOW did you TOTALLY miss Kirk's EPIC speech to Mirror-Spock at the end of, "Mirror, Mirror"?
My favorite speech of Kirks is yet to come, I have high hopes for when he gets his field promotion after Pike has his accident.
EXCELLENT !!!
5:44 now that was a surprise to see from a German standpoint XD - but let me tell you a bit here: many movies about the GDR should be titled: "this was not truly how it was like" XD
Classic Kirk
Does no one remember his speech to Palomas about being human in "Who Mourns For Adonis"?
4:41 Whoa! Mine too! 😎
Thanks. 🖖🏻
Captain Kirk never died he was brought back to life in the book Star Trek the return
Must be cold in that studio all the time lol
I really wish you would/could play the clip audio for videos like this!
I can't find the video with Captain Janeway's speeches. Anyone got the link?
You misquoted Wrath of Kahn. It's "encountered" not "met".
Some people think free speech is saying things without consequence.
"we don't have freedom of speech to talk about the weather"
Some do, but the wise know that with freedom comes accountability. That being said, we must also remember that open disagreement is the most common springboard of useful change. Saying what we think must be allowed lest we all become afraid to think, with tyranny and stagnation the inevitable results.
One of the tenets of fascism is freedom from responsibility aka, "I was just following orders."
I feel like this list is backwards. "Risk is our business..", Kirk's eulogy, and "You've made war neat and painless..." are easily the most iconic in the entire franchise. But you put them last...?
Love the real-world cutaway examples. So (sadly) prescient....
Alanis Morrisette as god... Dogma reference.😂
I just used "Risk is our business" as the title and tagline for a poker article lol ...
What was with the Alanis Morissette video popping in?
Was it a Very Hot Day when You Recorded this ! I HAD TO STOP THIS AND WALK AWAY a FEW TIMEs BECAUSE OF THE TWO Mountain s Under the White Mist ! ? your t ~ shirt ;
Wow the Editor, went for the 90s clips for screen Grabs.
Different person but that was Captain Stiles. Anyway the Omega Glory speech about our Constitution comes to mind if I have the right episode
I clock your Dogma reference Sean.
8 is nr 1 for me
8:07 Interesting conflict with how Picard turned out.
I liked immeadiately after reading go climb a rock, go figure...
In STVI, Meyer shouldn't have bent and had Saavik back in the part that became Valeris. Would have been a way bigger emotional kick.
Risk is our business is the one I think of first
It's more of a line delivery than a speech, but I'm partial to Shatner's performance for "Klingon bastards, you've killed my son."
Kirk’s speech at the end of The Omega Glory should have been #1. Anybody who doesn’t like that speech is just unAmerican.
@4:29 Dammit... 😭😭
"I don't believe in a No Win scenario."
was it a little cold up on the rock you climbed, Sean
Everything, In a nutshell... how awesome r u guys??
Did Star Trek ever revisit the First Federation? If no, they should...
He wasnt silencing Stiles. If anything he was saying if he wanted to talk that way he could do it elsewhere.
Nothing of Paul Wesley or Chris Pine… Chris Pine did have the stay a Captain revelation in Star Trek Beyond passing on the Vice Admiral promotion…
I don't remember the rock band in that movie. seen at 9:52
Seán, love your work at Trek Culture, but we need you to do more at Who Culture too. Ellie needs a break...
