My Name is Brian Dampier, My Ancestor is William Dampier. William Dampier was the captain of 1 of the 2 ships which Alexander Selkirk was on as a navigator when he decided to stay behind on this island, It was also William Dampier who returned 4 years and 4 months later and found Mr. Selkirk alive and well. This of course was chronicled in William Dampier's book "A new voyage around the world" It is this book where Defoe drew the inspiration for the story of Robinson Crusoe. William Dampier was famous for this work and his contributions to early science including the addition of over 1,000 words to the English Dictionary including Avocado, subspecies, BBQ, and more. Dampier was the guest of many of the member of the British Government at the time. How you miss this very easy to verify information is mind boggling at best.
The island was described as "The most romantic spot of the earth" in "Two years before the mast"(published in 1840) by Richard Henry Dana (Dana Point, California was named after him). He already had a knowledge of the island by reading Robinson Crusoe prior to his visit. It's not a bad idea to get lost in the island like that. If Robinson Crusoe landed on the wrong island, the story wouldn't have been the best seller.
That's true, 419 miles would have been a long, dangerous trip in a raft or canoe. Alexander Selkirk was afraid of falling into the hands of the Spanish so Santiago, Chile would have been off limits for him. In fact, two Spanish ships stopped at his island, and a landing party fired at him as he ran back into the jungle. Selkirk was right about the condition of the pirate ship, he was on. It wound up sinking, and the survivors of the sinking were taken into captivity by the Spanish.
Are there Easter Island heads on Robinson Crusoe Island? I never heard of this yet we see these Easter Island heads in a video about Robinson Crusoe Island.
True. Easter Island is about 1,800 miles further out. I didn't realize that Selkirk was 419 mi from Chile. You'd think he would make a raft. He must have been worried about being hung as a pirate.
Bart Bartoloy bart i live in the archipelago and we have 3 island, robinson crusoe, alexander selkirk and santa clara. in the video u can see robinson crusoe. a. selkirk island is amazing and more beautiful for me
