How to create a sweet synth sequence in less than 3 minutes with the Novation Summit

- Just to show you how easy it is. Who needs talent when you have a good synth. Listen from scratch with good headphones.
I am often asked how I manage to work so quickly. But when you know your set up and you're a little creative, everything falls into place. It's useless to buy 50 synths to make you better, just learn the ones you have at disposal.

This was interesting too see how it's done in this fashion. There are quite a lot of knobs to be able to use on that Summit. Nice! One thing I like is it's all easily accessible instead of having to scroll through screens. 👨💻 That stuff takes up time, and can be very inconvenient to on the spot creativity or ideas sometimes. Gotta strike while the iron is hot, and you made it look quick and easy. Great final sound and teaching display! The high tone sounds like a video game effect. Very cool equipment! 👍 👍 🎛🎹 🎮 🎶 🎵 🚫🏞
Fully agree. I personally don’t like modern synths with touch screens panels. Not criticizing though, just not my cup of tea. It’s like in a Bugatti, you will never find a Tesla-ish tablet on the board because the car is timeless. This synth is timeless.
It took time to master all knobs separately and the interaction they have with each others.
So that 3 minutes thing is kind of a lie as it takes years to tame the beast 🤣

@@nolake You're welcome Fred. I actually started off with analog equipment myself, and although it took me time to learn what to do with the knobs, it was much more fire up and go style convenience. There's too much loading, waiting, scrolling, locating in the Logic/Omnisphere realm. Although the sounds might sound good, it can be very time consuming to just compile a nice selection of instruments to work with on the board. If it weren't for my friend messing up that analog equipment, I'd probably still be using it today. Plus, the real time arrangements were unique. There are some shortcuts in Logic or some stuff you can do to make things convenient, but I always forget to set up my favorite kits/instruments and just save it like that to make it easier. I'm sure I'll end up getting one of these or something very similar in time thanks to you. 🙌🤝

That reverb is gold
Indeed, it’s one of the most precious assets of the beast. Cheers man.
The effects on the Summit are so good that I started designing sounds on it backwards: reverb, delay and chorus first, and then work from right to left on the machine. Great controls help the creative process so much, as you demonstrated.
It’s a good way of starting indeed. I personally mess around a bit everywhere changing this and then that until I find something that suits me.

Very cool Fred! It is great to see your workflow like this. I really need to get back to using hardware at some point, you can't beat turning knobs by hand when creating synth music.

Yeah turning knobs is the most enjoyable part for sure. I can spend hours just to find the settings I’m looking for.

Hey Frederic I enjoyed this tutorial, the Novation is a fabulous synth, I wish I could get my hands on one, but after I somehow obtain the Roland Jupiter X, that would be my dream synth, in other words, synths with knobs. Thanks for sharing this. This sequence is great, very expressive. I did a similar tutorial some years ago with my Kawai SX-240, but creating a jet engine sound, complete with the turbine whistles with mainly white noise. I may see if I can find this video and re-post it, not sure if I still have it. Nice work!
Hey thank you so much for the compliment ! Yeah both Novation and Roland propose amazing machines. I don’t think there’s bad synths nowadays. And even the digital parts are so complex that it can’t be compared anymore with what has been done in the past.

Hey Fred, thanks, I think Brian Eno said that about the DX7! lol. I tried with mine, and it hindered my creativity, way too tedious, I never had a synth with knobs, I can see why you like it, and use it to get the creativity flowing!
I’d kill to have a DX7 or DX7II.

Tu sais, j’aurais le même problème que toi avec n’importe quel autre synthé.
Ce qui m’impressionne le plus c’est que, quand j’ai commencé il y a 3 ans, je trouvais que le synthé sonnait super d’entrée de jeu. Maintenant je trouve qu’il sonne bof tant que tu n’as pas fait certains réglages. Amusant comment l’oreille et le cerveau peuvent être de plus en plus exigeants.

@@nolake j’ai eu la même expérience avec mes synthés! Je pense que c’est dû au fait que le cerveau et l’oreille recherchent toujours un certain taux de surprise. Par exemple au départ on fait des sons avec une modulation simple, mais très vite ça nous semble trop répétitif et donc on rend cette modulation plus complexe... Avec le Summit on a l’embarras du choix avec la multiplicité des modulations possibles 😀
Oui c’est vraiment infini et à ce jour je n’ai pas été beaucoup plus impressionné par les synthés plus récents au double du prix. Par contre pour un bon résultat il faut un peu trifouiller, là où d’autres machines en jettent plus d’entrée de jeu.
