  • Exclusive: When Martin Hussey moved into supported accommodation his family thought he would get the best care.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But Martin, who has autism and learning difficulties, was neglected and abused at the home.
The home was run by the National Autistic Society and now Martin's family have won an out of court settlement against them and secured a £70,000 payout.

This is one of the reasons why I have considered leaving the UK two years ago. No matter how hard us autistic folks work to show that we are worthy of acceptance and validation, this society would NEVER consider us as capable as neurotypical folks. If you’re autistic, know your worth and hold onto to it tight. Because the society of the UK today divided by the Brexit debate won’t.

He has his family & friends on his side - a high proportion of people in his situation don't. Without that help, things would be much worse for him.

@Rao Kadambari What do you mean? The NHS don't provide the support that family & friends do.

Worst in the USA, I have twins with Autism who are low IQ and non verbal and blind. They were in group homes during their late teen and 20’s and there were constant “accidents” and unexplainable incidents that finally after 1 of them almost died due to being left in a hot van for 7 hours we said enough. We now have them both back home with us. I have to fight constantly to keep the hours we need to have Medicaid funded staff here to help us. It’s a constant battle for what they need. But I know they are safe and being treated with love and respect now.

How can these supported living homes be outside CQC scrutiny? That scrutiny should be mandatory for all types of residential care.

The charity sector is often as driven by cost savings as profit driven firms, but hides behind their various reputations as care givers. Justice is blind and has been served in this case. Good luck, Martin.

Get your evidence together; “facts not feelings”. If you feel like this, what actually happened and who did what, when? Or what did not happen that should have?

    • @verandisoldusty6834

@Saint Norbert No but if you want to go to court facts like times, places, names of those involved with the reason you are taking them to court are a must. No need to be solicitor to understand this basic fact as feelings is just slander & cannot be proven = case thrown out for time wasting at a guess.

Experience is essential! Pay is essential! Regulation is essential! Getting a politician to understand this let alone Autism is a battle that has been going on for far to long! Sort it out Health Secretary

Can't get enough of the right staff because they can't afford to pay the right wages.
If we want our loved ones looked after properly we need the right wages (not minimum wage) with the right officially certified training. So we have enough experienced qualified staff doing the job.

Does NAS (and other similar charities) charge local authorities to provide care in these homes? And also take money from residents’ personal care budgets? And continue to receive money from private & corporate donors? Non-profit making charity? Charities Commissioner should be scrutinising audits for “value for money” care provision.

The shame is people know this is going on up and down the land and it's not being dealt with. Autistic people aren't living as long, as the able bodies. Why, yet again counted second class citizens.

I happen to be Autistic Myself… 😭😭😭 Somewhat Disagree with that Statement that people on The Spectrum. Don’t live that Long. We guys live as long as peeps that are NT. Also The Late Sir Patrick Moore whom was also Autistic lived well into he’s 80’s… 😳😳😳 Bill Gates The Late Steve Jobs, Elon Musk & Mark Zuckerberg… All on & within The Autistic Spectrum… 😳😳😳 but there all Very HIGH Profile Celebs & don’t have 2 ever concern themselves where the next penny or cent is this coming from… 😳😳😳 Down’s Syndrome. Now there Life Expectancy is only Approx Aged 60… 😳😳😳

@@nickmuscat2913 Autistic people on average have significantly shorter lives & their suicide rate is significantly higher than average.
I think life expectancy with Down's is significantly lower than 60.
