In the original script, he was supposed to walk away after getting slapped. It was Poitier who insisted he strike back and they rewrote the scene. Iconic.
I also want to give credit to the actor playing Endicott. He was so rattled by Tibbs striking back that he broke down in tears. Excellent.

Veteran actor, Larry Gates. He really helps bring out the tension and pathos of the scene. I almost want to cry with his character at the end, thinking so much I valued in my life has changed for the worse.

Great scene in an all-time great movie. Poitier has said on multiple occasions that Tibbs slapping Endicott was not in the original script. He asked the filmmakers to add the return slap otherwise he would not have taken the role. R.I.P. Sidney Poitier.

@@ericbarry570 That's rather surprising as the slap has some downstream consequences; it's not self-contained. The subsequent scene between the mayor and Gillespie, at any rate, would have to have been hastily slotted in or rewritten to accommodate the change. But then, it wouldn't be the first time a screenplay was hurriedly reworked in pre-production or production.

    • @gordoncameron8222

On further thought I guess it only would have taken a small bit of rewriting to adjust the story to the slap, not a big deal.

It was a deeply symbolic scene, for me and for non-white people worldwide! CLASSIC Film. One of my all time favorites. There is a moment at the 3:47 mark of this scene that is very subtle yet very POWERFUL. Immediately after 'the slap' Endicott says "There was a time when I could have had you shot" Watch closely Sidney Poitier as Virgil Tibbs with a combination great look as he ever so slightly 'rolls his shoulders' before exiting the scene. It speaks volumes as to the nature of his character. I have a hard time believing that 'shoulder roll' was written in the script. More believable as to the brilliance and imagination of the actor. God, he was good. FOREVER Grateful for the artistry of this man. Rest in Peace, Sidney Poitier. And Thanks.

It turns out the former president was a master at having a photo opportunity with a group of people such as blacks, and saying that he was putting into place some thing that would really help their community. Did you ever ask yourself why there was no outcry or grumbling from Republicans in Congress when he did things like that? It was because they knew that he regularly went in later privately and rescinded what he had done in public in the photo op. Read what Google has to say about his record. Just read the entire thing.

Of course, Sidney Portier was powerful in the starring role, but Larry Gates as Eric Endicott was equally terrific in this scene. My favorite part of Mr. Tibbs. fun fact: The slap back wasn't part of the script but Mr
Sidney gotten tired of being disrespected and the direct said keep it rolling.

The slap scene was not Sidney receiving the slap but a stand in actor. The actor who played Endicott did not want to slap a man like Sidney due to respect.

There was a great line later in the movie when the mayor of Sparta asks the sheriff when he changed he’s mind about Tibbs. The sheriff’s reply was, “what makes you think I’ve changed my mind about him”? The mayor said, “because our last chief of police would have shot Tibbs as soon as he slapped Endicott and claimed self defense”.
