Thanks for the video. I've been a Dawg my whole life and went to my first game in 1980. I am now and have been for many years a season ticket holder. I've been to most of the SEC stadiums and quite a few games in Atlanta and New Orleans, where I now reside. Point is, my memory goes back beyond 2021. Why UGA struggled so much to run the football this year is a little baffling to me. But here is my guess based on what I know and have seen over the years. First, we are basically missing most of what would have been the Sophomore and Junior (true - i.e. second and third year) classes. UGA DID NOT recruit the OL very well for a couple years and the guys they got have mostly left via the portal. Then the constant injuries never allowed the same five to start two games in a row until the SEC Championship game this year. The OL never "came together" as expected or predicted - and the OL is usually the unit that sees the biggest improvement during the season and that just did not happen this year. Next, nobody, and I mean NOBODY, was afraid of our WRs. With the exception of Arian Smith running a straight vertical route, there wasn't a guy on the outside that struck fear in any opposing DC. And they figured, if we DID SOMEHOW get behind the secondary, we were as likely to drop the ball as catch it and that was IF Beck put the ball where it needed to be which was not a very dependable outcome. I don't know how many open guys we had this year where Beck just missed them or threw them back into coverage and the DB got there just in time to make a play. So, opposing DB's walked a safety up, went man on the X,Y, and Z, and sold out to stop the run. And we were SO dedicated to establishing the run that it was usually when we were in deep poo when the offense would start throwing the ball more. And, IF that was successful, we could usually find a little success running the ball later in games. But we were determined to run the ball and kept banging our heads against that wall until it was "uh-oh" time and we had no choice but to sling it around. I am not laying blame here and I am not pointing out Bobo - I remember when Bobo was the OC before under Richt and he was damn good. The most successful the offense has ever been in UGA history until the last two years under Monken and it just so happens that Bobo had to follow that act. I don't think Bobo and UGA staff had a lot of confidence with anything other than trying to establish the run. I think it was a bunch of little things that added up to one big problem. We can't undo two bad years of OL recruiting, even with the portal and UGA hasn't taken an OL from the portal yet - because that is one of the positions that takes time in the program to develop; it's not just plug and play. I forgot to mention that the opposing DCs weren't afraid of Beck running the ball either, which he did a few times and made some really huge plays that WERE NOT part of the game plan or even from the playbook. The Dawgs are already known as a run first team and the lack of any kind of reliable explosiveness from the outside made the opposing game plan pretty self-evident. And it kept working so the other DCs kept following suit. It didn't help either that our defense this year, although really, really good, did not have the tendency to take the ball away. There were few games where I thought our starting filed position was good overall. Again, just a whole bunch of little things that fed into each other and added up to a less than expected performance from the offensive side of the ball. That being recounted, UGA IS THE SEC CHAMPION THIS YEAR. Yeah, Texas made ii one round further in the playoff, big deal, they still lost when the stage got big enough. While UGA was unable to rise to every challenge this past year, they still managed to do it enough to be the CHAMPS. Had this season happened in 2020, prior to 2021 and 2022, we would look upon this season in a completely different light. This 2024 team was not even close to the 2021, '22, and '23 teams. And I'd say not the 2017 team and probably not the 2018 team either. Had this season been before the natty's it would look like another high point where UGA just couldn't break through in the end. Disappointing? Sure! End of the world, not so fast my friend. Despite the obvious issues we had this year, we were still very, very close. It does make me ill that we lost to an inferior opponent in Notre Dame - and that whole game was so unlike UGA under Smart. I really think the "rust" factor played a huge part, also. And that team is now playing for the Championship. So, it's not all doom and gloom. Actually, it's quite a sunny outlook. The problems are evident and addressable. And how much does UGA have to improve to be right back in the natty game? Not much I don't think. But, the schedule is going to be tough again. But in Coach Smart I trust. And there isn't a team out there that I would trade places with - I'll take the two in the hand and avoid the baggage that comes with being a Buckeye and, to a lesser extent, an Irish wee-man. It bugs me a lot that everyone with a platform and speaking on UGA acts like it's a funeral when it should be a celebration. We still have boat loads of talent. We just added a ton more with the portal and the '25 recruiting class. And we have the best coach in the country and it's not even close. When your team finishes in the quarter-finals with and SEC Championship to show, and everyone acts like it's the worst season since the goat was our mascot, then our program, our team must have been doing something awfully good to have set those king of ridiculous expectations, and those expectations are sport-wide. It's not just the UGA homers. So, like I said, sunny. 224! It's 224 days until kickoff. Go Dawgs!!!
Man, I am missing all those SEC and National Championships UGA has won with Mike Bobo as OC. Bobo was OC for CMR from 2007-20014. UGA never won a SEC Championship much less a NC in those years. UGA did win the SEC Championship this year with Bobo as OC. I believe that says more about how Texas was over hyped, over rated and the flaws that Texas has and that were ignored than it says UGA was that good. Truth be told UGA should win the SEC almost every year that CKS is the Head Coach. Mike Bobo runs a stale, predictable, unimaginative offense which is why the team lost to Alabama, Ole Miss and Notre Dame this year, and also why UGA's offense will disappear for at minimum a Qtr every game and at worst 2 to 3 Qtrs a game. Mike Bobo is DGD and his loyalty to UGA cannot be questioned nor should it. What is in question is his ability as a OC and for me that ability is lacking.
My running back star Dad always said "You got nothing if the "Tank Fleet" is not performing." Your assessment agrees with what my Pop continually asserted, Dean.
The WR position should be a strength this upcoming season. Between WR and TE there's no reason we shouldn't have big targets on the field. Regardless if Bobo goes or stay, we should be much better at these two positions.
You know all we as fans want is 100 percent out of our boys that play, so bring In the boys that love the game and not the money, because if all they want is money they turn out like Beck... Brock and Lad loved the game and that's what we need more of...
Losing Van Pran at center, a 3 year starter I believe, that's the guy that kept the blocking schemes right during those championship runs. Once Wilson gets some more reps, the line will come around. The running backs need to just use the blocking and go.
Feels like we're going back to an OL of all guards, which is what Searles has always done. OL has never been a strong point for any team he's coached. OL recruiting has fallen off both times he's coached at Georgia. I hope Kirby isn't going to let Searles lampoon this program like coach Richt did.
UGA needs a leader at QB, a big RB that doesn’t think he’s Barry Sanders and just runs people over. UGA needs a cohesive o-line and consistent defensive line that can take pressure off the secondary.
I think Gunner is a leader. Beck was not. Running backs are pretty good. I like a Frazier, Jones, both Robinsons when healthy, and Bowens. O-Line needs better coaching.
If the offensive line isn't any good it doesn't matter who the running back is they probably won't be good either and if the play calling isn't any good then that's not good as well
Dawgs needed Better COACHING Decisions!! Go to HALFTIME and KICK THE BALL into the ENDZONE to Start the 2nd Half and the Dawgs are in a Game they can Win...Lay Off the Jimmie and Joes, they are Alright...... WE Should have beat a Team in the Championship Game Monday Nite. Go Dawgs!!
Assuming the Robinson boys actually stay healthy the RB room becomes a legitimate strength. Chauncey Bowens could be the immediate back up to Frazier . Dwight Phillips is your speed element that can be deployed in various places in the basic mold of Sony Michel and DeAndre Swift. Of course, if you have the room, getting someone viable from the portal is something to explore. Not a depth piece. A legit force.
How much weight do we put on the fact that this past year schedule was the toughest in the cfp. While the previous years were significantly easier are we really comparing Apples to Apples
Inexperience on the O_line and the D-line with inexperience at QB, doesn't lend itself to winning against the best teams with experience at those postions. BUt good try Dean.
That hunted thing with Kirby over last year has ended..he’s lost his mojos since 22..23…what hiring with the heart in a buddy Bobo will do..shame on bobo setting this program back a once being on top for 24 months..here come med bobo waltzin back in…
Kirby destroyed his own legacy and sabatoged Last year and this year keeping Bobo. Georgia losing to bama with that team coming first drive dominating then Bobo got scared and couldnt believe he scoredonce on suban and started playing
I don't think you can blame Frazier or Etienne for the problems that the running game had. I'll go further and say that Etienne decided not to come back for '25 because, if anything, the offensive line looks weaker and Etienne just didn't have any room to show his stuff in '24, nor did Frazier. I think the issue may be the coaching and if that can get straightened out, perhaps we can improve. Ultimately, it's Kirby's fault for not seeing the issue and correcting it
Bobo one more year will prove that he isn’t fit for his position nor at any college , time will tell , defense saved our butts many times this season , offensive line has killed us always digging our way back , not blocking , nor catching , running backs are soft badly , they should be a wrecking train , that we do lack , OC is no championship leader
This years o line was the most overrated group I can ever remember…best in the country? Not by a long shot. The offense as a whole was a huge letdown. Kirby will get it straight. GO DAWGS!
The handwringing about Searels?! He is literally the offensive line coach. I really think UGA’s championship run is over. I don’t think Kirby is built for the new college football. But Kirby could replace Searels with a random person off the street and get better offensive line play. I just don’t think he’ll do it. The same with Coley and Bobo. Kirby’s next 5 seasons will be Mark Richt 2.0. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2030.
@@wildmanslayer2330I’m sorry that made you mad. Kirby has had a ton of success but he is no Saban. Pretty sure Bobo was looking for a job several times but Saban didn’t hire him. I love Stetson.
