Many games were ESPN on ABC. They should have done the same with the national championship. My parents, for example, have a basic DirectV package. They don’t even have wifi. ESPN is not included, but local channels are. My dad listened on the radio. Probably thousands of similar situations, but they would’ve watched if it was on ABC.
I would rather see 2 star players play for the school they love and appreciate an education rather than watch unproven 18 year olds swap schools for money. College football viewership will decrease.

No south or west coast teams so even people who are casual to somewhat hardcore football fans of their particular conference or region or team may not have tuned in. The teams are huge brands with fan bases spread out across the country, yes, but the people who are from those regions may not care to tune in if their team and/or conference isn’t represented.
I graduated from A&M and live in Austin. None of my Aggie friends cared about the Natty once it was OSU vs ND. In Austin, you wouldn’t have thought there was another game. The city seemed to just check out once Texas lost. Neither Ohio State or ND seem to have a big fanbase around here. That is opposite of last year, multiple Michigan bars and watch parties. I can only speculate, but I imagine this held true for a lot of cities and college fan bases outside the mid north. It just didn’t seem to have much interest.

I think a big part of it is that people *do* hate OSU and ND, they just hate both of them. When two teams you hate are playing and it becomes a "can they both lose" game you have way less of a desire to watch.
I think the 12 team playoff over saturated the post season. Personally I didn't really care by the end of it. In the 4 team or bcs I always cared bc there were only a few games. Bring back the 4 team play off and restore the meaning of the most impactful season in sports!

I enjoy watching some college football, but not a lot, and in no universe is it worth to me paying for cable/UA-camTV/satellite to catch the national championship. I cut the cord in 2014. I have not seen the last few championship games. I'm not going out on a Monday night. I can catch my local NFL team every single week for free, but I can't watch the CFP championship?? Put it back on ABC if you want higher ratings. The NFL has it right.

But I didn’t see it as cause for so much as a single raised eyebrow, and the thought ‘maybe I need to reassess how good I think South Carolina is’ never even crossed my mind. There were some actual SC fans in the live chat and in the same comment sections I was in at the time, and some were making the excuse that ‘SC didn’t even care about this game, so..’, claiming that was why they lost. And I don’t think that was true. It was clear on the player’s faces that they cared, and they wanted to pull it out in the 2nd half. I just thought they didn’t play well, actually that they played one of their worst games since very early in the season. In any case, I wasn’t thinking about odds or lines, or anything else of that sort. But I’ll say now what I said then. Illinois is not even remotely a better team than South Carolina, and if they played 10 games, SC would win 7 of those games easily, maybe more. That day just wasn’t their day. But if dude is mad at JP for simply rating SC higher, I don’t know.. He can cry more about it, I guess. They played well and won the day, and they should be proud about a solid bowl W. I missed the semi finals since it was on Thursday and Friday. That is not prime time for college teams. That is reserved for the weak conferences.
