Wonderful. I rode these trains in 1994 with a group of 40 Australians, 10 British and 2 Germans. It is good to see they are still in operation. Thankyou very much for getting these scenes onto youtube. John
The Harz railway should be on every railway enthusiast`s "bucket list," better still go while youre young !! Was over there in July 2011 on a holiday with the "TREYN" holiday company , had a wonderful time visiting several railways , the trip up the Harz mountain being the wonderful highlight.
Great video Austin. Many thanks for that. Isn't it interesting to see the ways in which railways fit into the environment in other countries? The street running, roadside operation and lack of trackside fencing creates an atmosphere that is very different to the UK. Noel
Thanks Noel, it was wonderful to be in a country where common sense prevailed rather than being in a nanny state. People know the railway is a dangerous place so don't venture near the track when trains are due. Filming in Britain won't be the same for me now after this visit to the Harz
Thanks very much Chris, we had hoped for a little snow but the pleasant sunshine was a nice bonus. I can heartily recommend a visit and it will definitely be an annual pilgrimage for us now
Spectacular footage Austin - you obviously planned your locations very well and you either have a good knowledge of the roads or had a good driver! The class 99 2-10-2 tanks are really powerful and well suited to the line and seem to be accelerating up the grades - amazing! They also have a surprising turn of speed for a small wheeled loco and the open verandah coaches are a real Godsend to a photographer. liked the passing at 16.30 and the start by I think 99-0222 was quite explosive! Can't wait for part 2. Thanks for sharing it. Ken
Thank you very much Ken, my wife and I booked this break in December and I've spent many hours poring over maps, timetables and watching many fine videos from the line by previous visitors. Many of the footpaths follow the railway so it is very easy to see the trains and the road network is first class
acw71000 My 2 year old grandson, Harry, is so enthralled with this video Austin. He gets so excited jumping up and down especially when the loco charges past puffing furiously! I told my son that Harry shows great potential as a steam engine buff! I'm not sure he shared my enthusiasm! Thanks for a very enjoyable video! Best wishes. Ken
Ken Browne That's lovely to hear Ken. I never fail to be surprised at how much youngsters enjoy steam trains so much and of course they are the ones who will keep it going for others to enjoy in the future. I take it your son hasn't caught the bug!
Hi again Austin. Just got back from 5 days at the Harz. What a fantastic place as you say - virtually a narrow gauge version of the Jing Peng line in China. Thanks again for your suggestions - they helped us get some good shots. Hopefully I will try and download some onto UA-cam but in the meantime there are some photos on my website (Peter Brackenbury Zen Folio). Cheers and thanks again. Peter PS will be going again and will try walking down from the Brocken to Schierke.
Thanks Peter, I'm glad my tips were of some use. We're going again in February next year and definitely intend to do the walk from the Brocken...weather permitting!
Video beautiful Austin, with very well chosen locations and outstanding video editing. Fortunately that you could get your first shots on your corrupted SD card. More eagerly awaited ... Philippe
What a railway!! You certainly captured the spirit of the system there Austin, Very enjoyable viewing. I must return to Germany soon. Many thanks for sharing. Cheers Alan
Amazing shots Austin, looks odd with the train running down the main street near the beginning though . Fantastic scenery with snow steam and sunshine what more can you ask for . Glad you sorted the sd card . Regards Steve
Thanks very much Steve, the street running is strange to our eyes but quite common abroad. What a pleasure to not see fences or hi - viz vests too. I'd thoroughly recommend a visit to the Harz for any steam enthusiast
They must have a lot of that class of loco going by all the different numbers on your trip, must have been nice going thru all that beautiful countryside behind some great steamers
17 of the 2-10-2's Jim, 99 222 was a prototype built in 1931 and 99 7231 - 7247 were built between 1954-56. It was a wonderful place to visit, especially so for a steam enthusiast!
Excellent video Austin, the scenery is superb and the snowy scenes remind me of my skiing holidays in Austria. Looked well worth the trip, and wouldn't mind doing it myself one day. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Liam
Thank you very much Steve. I certainly won't be using that make of SD card again! Just pleased to have rescued the footage now. Like all technology it's great when it works!
This thing is called "Mischvorwaermer" in German (means somewhat like "mixing feedwater preheater"). It is used to preheat, to degas and to soften the boiler feed water. An additional advantage is that it condensates and wins back water from the exhaust steam, the consumption of boiler feed water is lowered around 15% that way.
Cracking footage Austin, most enjoyable; and with the 3 x s -- sun steam and snow. Looking forward to part 2. Do you mind if I ask, was this a trip you arranged yourselves or a "package" deal? regards Mike
Many thanks Mike, we booked it ourselves came to around £575 for the two of us including flights, accommodation, car hire and one nights hotel in Berlin. Very easy to find your way around so I personally wouldn't consider a package deal.
Absolutely brilliant, Austin. How many steam trains run on a February day? You obviously had all you could handle, and did it superbly! . . . . . . Alan
Austin I'm sure I've seen this video before, spring operated turnouts and at 19.30 you received a nice steam bath, great video, how long did you stay there ? they must of quite a number of these locos as I've seen at least 7 different road numbers
Thanks John, I think there's about 17 of them. We were there just under a week in 2014 but have just returned after 8 days. Quite a bit of snow this time, like your model railway!
Thank you very much, I did use the stabilising function for the on board footage and also used a program called Pro Dad Mercali in the editing process to make it a little more smooth. The camera was on a mounting plate and I was holding that rather than the camera which probably helped. I must say that having been to the Harz I'm finding it difficult to generate much enthusiasm for trains at home!
acw71000 Germany can do that to you. The narrow gauge scene in the former DDR is excellent and the Plandampf events are something else. Couldn't do the freight event on the Werratal this year but going out in a few weeks for the Neustadt event. Five days of main line passenger trains featuring nine locomotives. Can't wait.
Superb Austin, I used to subscribe to a young man who filmed this line regularly....It looks a wonderful place to visit, and I'm delighted that you've captured such stunning footage from your visit. Concerned about your Memories card problems, which card failed?....Regards...Bob
Thanks very much Bob, it is somewhere I'd always wanted to visit and the whole region is so beautiful. The SD card was by Integral which I bought just before we left. Having tried a few different programs to recover the files I was thrilled that Photo Rec did the job yesterday afternoon especially as I have some lovely night shots and some special workings
Fantastic video, Austin! Thumbs up!! I really can imagine, that you enjoyed your first trip to this Region after watching your video! I'am glad you found the best spots. You mentioned in another comment, that filming in Britain won't be the same for you now after your visit at the Harz? Well, at least its good to hear, that you have successfully recovered the SD-Card...my anger would have been huge, if this had happened to me during a trip! One question regarding to the sound: In my opinion the sound muffles a little bit...which type of microphon do you use?
Many thanks Frank. All I can say is that the Harz was everything I expected and more, such a beautiful region and the bonus of steam. I was using a Rode Videomic for these shots as my usual Sennheiser has a faulty cable and I didn't want to trust it for these shots. I find the Rode is a little more bassy which nay account for the muffled sound. I'm so pleased to have been able to retrieve the scenes from the faulty SD card, you can imagine how I felt at the time!
Austin, absolutely super, well this brings back sad memories, my first trip to the UK with a canon camera, never had any trouble in Australia, took about 12 or more films (photos) , because of the extra cost to develop them in the UK I've decided I get them developed back down under and to my horror almost all of them didn't turn out, apparently the shutter didn't open, maybe because I left the camera in the car overnight on some cold nights in March in Wales. A trip of a lifetime and this happened, so we've decided we have to go back and this time with a digital camera.
Thanks for your kind comments. Your problems with the camera were certainly far worse than mine although you can imagine my reaction when I thought I'd lost two days footage. At least I still had another three days to retrieve the situation
Thank you so much. Trapped in Australia it is so incredible to be able to share the magic and the majesty of this video clip. Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. We are going back to the Harz in February so hopefully there will be additional videos
Wonderful. I rode these trains in 1994 with a group of 40 Australians, 10 British and 2 Germans. It is good to see they are still in operation. Thankyou very much for getting these scenes onto youtube. John

Thanks for watching. I wish I had gone there years ago, it's a fabulous area
A very, very good video. Isn't it lovely that people from all over the world appreciate steam locomotives...
Indeed it is. And one of the great things about UA-cam is being able to watch and appreciate other countries rail networks. Many thanks for watching
Ah, the joys of travelling on end platform cars; another fine effort on your part.
Thank you very much, it was a fantastic experience and I will certainly visit again
Great video Austin. Many thanks for that.

Absolutely stunning Austin. You captured the line to perfection. Well done. A thumbs up from me. Cheers, Dave.
Many thanks Dave, I'd thoroughly recommend a visit, it's a fabulous place
I know this video has been around for some time but I still get much pleasure from watching it! Many thanks!
Many thanks for watching again, you must be a glutton for punishment!
In rate this video well into my top ten favourites!
A pleasure to watch Austin. Some lovely shots in the winter sun and scenery. Looks a great line to visit. Chris
Thanks very much Chris, we had hoped for a little snow but the pleasant sunshine was a nice bonus. I can heartily recommend a visit and it will definitely be an annual pilgrimage for us now
Thanks for a wonderful video Austin. Well turned out loco's and rolling stock with great scenery.
Many thanks for your kind comments Geoff, it is a wonderful area for the steam enthusiast and I'll definitely be going again

I always enjoy your C.M.E. vids very much but this one is simply stunning. The scenery and atmosphere are second to non many thanks Denis
Thank you Denis, it was a marvellous place to visit and I hope to return before too long
A great video. Brought back many happy memories. Thanks.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video

Really well filmed and editing is 1st class
Thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated
Great video been to Hartz mountains lot of years ago didnt get to go on the train but it bought back some memories thanks for sharing
Thanks very much. It's a lovely area with or without the trains
Superb Austin. nice to see other countries locos and their surroundings. (C&A)
Thanks very much, it was somewhere I'd always wanted to visit and it didn't disappoint
First class, I really enjoyed that trip Austin.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it

Merci Philippe, c'était un moment d'inquiétude avec la carte SD, mais j'étais tellement heureux de récupérer les films
What a railway!! You certainly captured the spirit of the system there Austin, Very enjoyable viewing. I must return to Germany soon. Many thanks for sharing.

I don't really know why I left it so long to visit Alan. It will certainly be an annual fixture from now on. Many thanks for your kind comments

Awesome footage Austin....a massive thumbs up from me on this one....shame about your SD card...a bit worrying.....best wishes....Steve.
Thank you very much Steve. I certainly won't be using that make of SD card again! Just pleased to have rescued the footage now. Like all technology it's great when it works!
Very nicely edited mix of shots. 23000 lb tractive effort those locos are apparently; that's near enough BR class 5!
Thank you, they are really impressive locos and the crews handle them superbly well
Thanks for some great video footage. Booked to go on first visit to Harz in June so looking for ideas for good videoing locations.
Cheers
Peter
Thanks very much Peter. I'll send you a message with some ideas for locations. You will really love the Harz, fabulous place for steam lovers
I really like the brawny look of these tanks. What's the fancy gadget atop the smokebox issuing a steady stream of steam?
Not 100% sure but I think it's something to do with the air brake
This thing is called "Mischvorwaermer" in German (means somewhat like "mixing feedwater preheater"). It is used to preheat, to degas and to soften the boiler feed water. +acw71000 Did you book flights to Berlin ???
Hannover (HAJ) would be closer and offer the same accessability to the Harz.
Absolutely brilliant, Austin. How many steam trains run on a February day? You obviously had all you could handle, and did it superbly! . . . . . . Alan
Thanks very much Alan, it was all we had hoped it would be, and more. Nine trains to the Brocken including four direct from Wernigerode.
