John Landis should have gotten serious jail time for manslaughter.
John Landis got off with a slap on the wrist.
Yup.. Absolute miscarriage of just... Absolutely disgusting...😢R.I.P...victims 🙏😇😇😇🙏🙏🙏❤️😥
People didn't go to jail for accidents like this.
Drunk driving deaths were a slap on the wrist, little to no jail time.
TYPICAL Hollywood.
And the parents / guardians of the children who put them in the situation in the first place ?? Working illegally for cash at 2:30am - What should they have gotten ??
Landis got away with murder. Those kids shouldn't have been on the set to begin with.
And isn’t that the responsibility of their parents to not have their children working illegally ??
@@troyonplanet The parents for both kids were recent immigrants to this country, and had no experience with working in Hollywood, they just wanted to give their kids a fun experience of being in a movie. Read the book "Special Effects: The Tragedy at Twilight Zone", and you will see how Landis evaded every red flag you could imagine to film this extremely dangerous portion of this vignette.
No, murder is done with intent, this was accidental not intentional. Reckless, yes certainly but not murder.
@@LadyGreyBlack regardless, they are your kids and you’re meant to not place them in harms way. If anyone asked me to have my kids on a movie set at 2:30 am with pyro going off everywhere, it would be a firm NO
Precisely
The story at the time was that Landis kept telling the pilot to fly closer on each take.
Yes. He was supposedly standing there shouting "Lower, lower!".
That is the story
@@TyeArtisik True!
However, unless I missed it , that fact went un mentioned in the post/video.
Back in the '60's, all of us schoolboys idolized Vic Morrow for his role on Combat!
RIP 🙏 Mika Renee and Vic you are all loved❤and missed
John Landis went on to direct Coming to America. Eddie Murphy gave him a job when no one else would, but John Landis couldn't help but be himself during production: an ungrateful jerk.
Also directed 'Thriller'.
Also directed the classic film An American Werewolf in London.
Landis got plenty of work after this event. Trading Places is a classic and his videos with Michael Jackson changed everything. Some of his other films were not so good but the work was there.
I’m disappointed in Eddie Murphy.
Hahahahahaha.@@Lily_of_the_Forest
Talk about getting away with a crime.. I remember this 😭 it was horrible
I can't imagine the horror the helicopter pilot must have experienced losing control knowing there were people beneath the aircraft
Dorsey Wingo had an opportunity to refuse to pilot the helicopter, yet caved to Landis. This was after he had lost vision due to the splashing of the creek water while all of the crazy pyrotechnics were going off during a rehearsal run of the scene without Morrow and the kids.
John Landis should've been locked under the damn jail.
And the parents / guardians of the kids who took the cash deal to have them working illegally at 2:30am ??
I remember this. Horrific. Still one of the biggest tragedies of Hollywood. Thank you for remembering the victims. 🕊️❤️🙏
I remember when this happened. A horrible end for Vic and those children. Landis could have used child size dumbies for the role. Any close ups could have been done in production. He took unnecessary risks with young kids and a trained stunt man could have stood in for Vic as well. There was no need for this tragedy to occure. Landis was responsible as the director. He's a great director, but I question his ethics to this day! 😢😢😢
You're so right about the dummies for the children in long shot. However, even the stunt man should never be put in such a perilous situation. Yes, let him stand in for Morrow, but do the shot with process photography, so the copter & the stuntman are never together in the same shot. 😢
RIP to Vic Morrow, Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen. This incident should have never happened, but John Landis didn’t listen to the safety concerns told to him and hired the two kids illegally in order to get around any sort of rules that would prevent such a scene from being shot.
Landis hired two kids illegally - which was approved by their parents - seems to me they are truly the ones to blame. Kids shouldn’t have been there in the first place.
I remember this tragic accident very well and it always stuck with me. Vic Morrow was actress Jennifer Jason Leigh's father.
Did she ever talk about it in interviews? I’d love it if she had a one-woman campaign to bring down Landis for killing her father.
Made me so mad that John Landis didn't do any time for his horrible mistake.
Don't recall him flying the chopper
He shouldn’t have hired children at all
One good Role I've seen Vic Morrow play was opposite Walter Matthau as the coach of the opposing team in The Bad News Bears... Such a tragedy that his career was cut short in such a way, he was a talented actor..
I didn't know that was him! Wow😢
Cut down literally. Man that's tragic. I know that accident affected those who saw it happen. RIP.
I remember this on the news when it happened. RIP to them all.
Rich guys get to settle out of court, so the rest of us go to rail.
Yep better get rich 😉👍
We're all equal in the eyes of the law, but the rich are more equal than the poor.
Rail
Landis got off easy in the criminal justice system but he paid for it with his career
His karma came back to haunt him.
But then Michael Jackson hired him to do Thriller
He did NOT pay for it with his career. He went on to become even more successful.
Those pics of the children working in the coal mines are from Pittston Pa. Born and raised there. My Great Grandfather and his brother were killed together in a mine explosion.
In my humble opinion, accountability should be held at every level of production to ensure the safety of all involved. It's a matter of ethics and responsibility in the entertainment industry.
He was also Jennifer Jason Leigh's father. She was in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
My favorite role of hers was as the daughter of Dolores Claiborne.
Also coach in original Bad News Bears.
I remember hearing about this horrible accident and I blame John Landis because what he did was illegal and the set itself was poorly constructed and an accident waiting to happen when you look at it. My thoughts are with the families affected by this horrible tragedy.
That's why John Landis hardly make movies today
Good! He should be behind bars.
@@Lily_of_the_Forest
So should Alec Baldwin.
@@Sal-gh1se I agree
Dragging a couple of little kids through a body of water, explosions going off all around you, and a helicopter about 20 feet above your head, all at about 2:30am; what could go wrong???
So sad and heartbreaking. Imagine they never thought of dying that day, since their mind was on filming a movie. I’m a fan of Vic Morrow. Rest In Peace.
I think it may have been worse had Vic seen the copter coming down. It all happened in a split second.
Fun Fact. Vic Morrow is the father of actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.
She looks like him too, especially the eyes.
She appeared in the film, Single White Female.
@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc yes she did =)
📽️ FAST TIMES AT RIDGMONT HIGH actress.
@@mikethebike2456 yep. Love that movie. =)
I remember when that happened. John Landis should have known better to film a scene that combined pyrotechnics and an aircraft. Editing could have been used to have made that scene safe for the actors. I'm surprised John Landis walked away unscathed.
I remember this well. The director was accused of negligence and went to trial. That was the attitude in those days among directors, the more reckless and dangerous the better.
Would of been better if they were to make dummy stunts out of the 2 kids. No one would of tell the difference since most of the film would be played on standard TVs. I heard this event over a million times and always wonder about the families of the kids. Thanks for sharing Sir.
My Dad directed "Combat" with Vic Morrow! They were good friends! Nobody got hurt on that show! Safety was paramount! Vic did not do his own stunts! Earl Parker was Vic's stunt double! Landis is a jerk with an ego that cost lives! Those kids should never have been on that set at that time in the morning let alone involved in such a dangerous shot! Where was the social worker? I worked on many shows as a minor! We always had a social worker on the set at all times! To make sure we were not over worked or were under the hot lights for long! As well as to not let us do anything dangerous with limited work hours! Landis should have been sent to jail for a long time! And never aloud to direct again! It did however hurt his career Katey Sagal's (Married with Children's) father died in a helicopter accident while shooting when Boris Sagal walked into the rear rotor blade! Rest in peace Dad, Vic, Boris and those precious kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you saying your father was COMBAT director Boris Sagal ? (or Bernard McEveety ? or John Peyser ?) I LOVED that show.
No my father is Georg Fenady all those other guys you mentioned were good friends of dad! They were a close bunch of guys! And talented with 50 plus years in the industry! JF.
Every sentence of yours ends with an exclamation point. It's as if you were yelling @ someone.
@johnfenady1226 Hi!! Ever considered writing a book on your Dad and these directors of TV from that era?
@@sandrasanders706 Yes my friend is a writer and would like to do just that. He and his wife have many projects. But someday we might just do that! Thanks for your comment. My brst JF.
Remember it well Uncle…..gave me worse nightmares than the movie 😱
As I get older, the less I can stand watching tragic death.
I know exactly what you mean.
Same happened to be when i became a father, there are movies that I love that are just harder to watch now especially if it involved children.
I saw this movie when it came out. I did not hear about this until after I saw the movie. Had I known I would not have went to see it
The NTSB never did determine conclusively what hit the tail rotor but do know a glue can lid somehow found its way into the mortar because it left a witness mark on the side of the helicopter where it impacted along with gasoline and black powder residue found on the lid and at the impact site on the aircraft. They believe an object (believed to be a piece of bamboo from a huts flooring) struck the tail rotor at high velocity since it actually impacted the trailing (back) edge of a spinning blade and did significant damage to it. The blade was also surrounded by fire which along with the stresses of the imbalance and change to aerodynamic loads had two effects. First the fireball heated the area around the tail to an estimated 300 F and this heat weakened the bonding of the blade skin to the blade core to 1-2% of its normal strength causing delamination and Second the damage and delaminations caused enough vibration to shake the tail rotor transmission enough to break away from its mounting.
In short the NTSB knows the aircraft was struck by material thrown from the mortar and this was the primary cause of the failure and crash with the root cause being improper precautions by the stunt and safety coordinators and special effects teams to ensure they did not hazard the flight. The pilot had already complained on a prior flight that evening about explosions too close to the helicopter but was assured by the coordinators they would do better. The technician who set off the fateful mortar was wearing a welding mask (due to the rotor wash) and could barely see anything looking through it at night (he was not supplied with actual safety goggles that would let him see better) and his queue was one of a sound of a machine gun rather than specific aircraft positioning.
This accident was truly wilful negligence by allowing timetable and expense to take priority over safety with most of the blame being at the feet of the stunt and special effects coordinators, and with the director (Landis) for poor oversight since he can overrule either if he determines the conditions to be unsafe. The pilot gets blamed a lot for not refusing to participate but he was given assurances that none of the pyrotechnics would be detonated near or under him so the factors that caused the accident were out of his control. He was not fined or charged by any agency because by its nature this is already a high risk flight because it is night, low flight, and in proximity of structures and people but nothing about it was reasonably expected to be overtly and clearly hazardous enough to be considered negligent on his part and seemed to be compliant with the regulations and rules of the time. Today such a flight would never happen because every FAA regulation is written in blood.
What a sad time in America. 😥😥 Stay safe out there, and rock on, Lamont! 💜✌
It is quite clear that the main body and skid of the helicopter did not contact the 3 people, all of them were struck by the rotors and mercilessly killed instantly. RIP.
Very sad thing to happen to all three😢 i was 12 years old when this took place i remember seeing it on the news! Thanks always for a great video Lamont 😊❤✌️💯
I remember when this happened and how horrific it was. The story that came out back then was that Vic Morrow and one of the children were decapitated by the blade. I don't know if this is true or not. May they all R.I.P.💔
it is there are pics / autopsy drawings / photos , i highly do not recommend looking for them
@@wadewilson5712
Do you know what happened to the helicopter pilot?
@@marisafernandez3397after seeing that head fly off, he could never face playing football
I heard the same thing.
It's true..just horrible
Vic Morrow was 53 years old. Carrying two children and running through water that was hip deep, with water sprays and pyrotechnics all around was probably too much to handle. A stuntman would be younger, and trained to manage these different variables. Vic' s stunts in TV were carefully choreographed with instructions by the director and technical staff: Do this, do that. Stunt people are trained to look at multiple variables as the go through rehearsals.
In light of tge mechanical failure, it's hard to tell if it was survivable by anyone.
Let's be glad that he's kind of things are not happening like they used to
Great details about this tragedy, Lamont. Be safe! ❤🙏
I remember this so well. Huge story and so sad. Broke our hearts.
Horrible way to die 😮
Quick and painless
I know 🫣🫣
Yep horrible but it was instaneous lights out, didn't feel a thing.
Thanks for sharing Lamont..!
Hey Lamont. That is tragic. Really sad 😔 😮
Yes i remember this story. Thanks for sharing.
I met Vic Morrow once at Harrah's casino in Lake Taho. A very nice man. Saddened me to hear of his passing back then.
Thanks for this one Lamont! Your the 🐐!
That’s Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, California.
Most of my family is buried there. I have a grandparent that is buried only a few graves away from where the little boy is at.
It’s very tragic that he and the girl died so young… and also the loss of Vic Morrow.
The boy was born the same year as me.
May they all RIP.
Morrow was decapitated in the accident.Landis should have been prosecuted for the deaths.Neither child should have been on the set at that hour.Proves once again money talks and can get you out of most trouble.
One of the children was decapitated too, tragically.
Wow I only ever saw Vic Morrow in one single movie
Dirty Mary crazy Larry ...classic car chase movie ...the ironic part is ViC is a sheriff looking for the 3 fugitives for basically the entire movie ..riding in a what ... Helicopter.
He's also the main opposing coach opposite Walter Matthau in the original The Bad News Bears (a favorite of mine as a kid).
After all these years, this is the first time I saw the crash.😱
Vic Morrow in Combat as Sgt. Saunders was one of the cooled roles on tv. I also enjoyed his role as Sherrif in the classic chase movie Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry. One of my favorite movies. Oh yeah and brought up here by another poster, his role in the movie The Bad News Bears.
RIP Mr. Morrow. And to those children.🙏✝️🙏
They should have used dummies in place of the children. This could have been prevented altogether.
This video was cut short so did not see the end. I remember when this happened, it was horrid what happened. My brother who served in Nam and had witnessed such things and had PTSD started having nightmares again thank goodness Don's wife got him to the VA for help. I do pray the families of the children and Vic are do well.
I dont think I have ever seen the footage with the moment of impact before, or at least I don't remember seeing it. It's absolutely shocking. How unfortunate that they were right in the path of the blades. Horrible.
The pictures of the bodies remains are worse. They were even part of a book which I find beyond disrespectful to their families.
@@murdlok ..Yes, out of curiosity I looked up more about this incident after seeing this video and found the pics. It was absolutely horrendous. Vic's body seemed to be the most damaged. I didn't see any pics of the little girl. I can't believe they could let something like that happen. They should have filmed Vic/the kids and the helicopter at different times, then spliced the footage together to make it appear as one cohesive shot in order to prevent a disaster like this.
Holy frick! When/how did those photos get leaked? I followed the trial at the time. Certainly never expected photos to be made public. How horrible.
Not many people know this, but they never found Vic Morrow's severed head, despite considerable effort. Some of his teeth were found over 1/2 mile away from the accident site, however. The family considered offering a reward to anyone who found it, but later considered it too morbid. Vic's cranium remains in the vicinity of the accident site near Santa Clarita.
This is wholly incorrect. All remains were found shortly after the accident.
@@jjulian1783 Clearly, you will never get a head in life.
So terrible for all of them Rip to you all😢😢😢😢
5:53: This is bull! Morrow was in his 50s, and had not worked in front of camera in years; , he was also trying to carry 2 kids while wading waist-deep in a creek, while live pyrotechnics are going off around him (he even accidentally drops Chen in the process)! How can a middle-aged actor do all of these things, and avoid the catastrophe which took his life? I strongly blame Dorsey Wingo, especially since he was too chicken-shit to stand up to Landis and tell him he did not feel safe flying the Vietnam-era helicopter while using real pyrotechnics during rehearsals!
Tragic 😮
Hello shemaj Ragin 😊 sending you lots of hugs and good vibes ❤✌️
I was 15 years old when the "acccident" happened. All these years later it's still boggling that everyone, especially Landis, got off scott free. He and the production team put children in harms way. Anyone watching the tragic video could see that Vic, carrying both children, was really struggling to make it through water and pyrotechnics. Three people lost their lives for a movie stunt, and to make things worse, the time travel (Vic Morrow) segment stayed in the movie.
I remember this well, the explosives were in 5-gallon sealed buckets, and it was the
LID of one of them that flew up and broke off the unprotected tail rotor. This was so dumb, there was no reason for the helicopter to be DIRECTLY overhead.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was surprised they kept that portion in the movie
Horrible disaster, ☹️
So sad 😢and senseless
Wow! How devastating and tragic way to go, so unexpected. I always say live your life to the fullest cause you never know when your last on earth is. RIP..😢
Great channel Lamont keep up the good work
I have never seen the uncensored video before. Horrific. I'm retired Army Special Forces Medic so I spent a lot of time in helicopters, including the Huey. I don't like helicopters and when my wife asked if I wanted to do a helicopter tour of the Big Island of Hawaii I said, No thanks. I'm so sorry for the loss of these children and Vic.
The children’s parents / relatives should NEVER have gotten them into the situation in the first place ! That’s your job as a parent not to put your kid in possible harms way…. 😡😡😡
Please read the book "Special Effects: The Tragedy At Twilight Zone": Landis was basically told the climax to the vignette was "too dangerous", and he had gone to great lengths to cast and film it against the wishes of all involved. As for My-Ca and Renee's families: they were recent immigrants, and had no experience of how Hollywood works; the numerous red flags (being paid under the table, the need for child advocates on a set, knowledge of child labor laws) were not easy for them to spot. Even on the night of the filming, these folks were told to explain how they were "friends visiting the set" if they were asked who they were, while the kids were kept out of view in a trailer until their scene called for them. You don't know what you don't know, and I don't blame them for being hoodwinked like they were.
I was 20 minutes away from this when it happened
I love these type of videos I still watch twilight zone till this day at night going to bed.. the black and white ones.🎬🎥💕👍🏿
I'm sure others have mentioned that Vic Morrow looking up would have prevented this mishap, which is wholey assinine.
I saw a video on a DVD back in 1993 that was graphic depict the scene of Vic Morrow and the two children. They slowed it down and you can see the heads detached from the body of the victims as they advance it framed by frame as they had multiple Hollywood cameras filming the scene.
Where is the little girl bury lamont you didnt show her or victor
I've seen this before really really sad and worst way to die!!!!!
Horrific footage they never stood a chance.
Vic Morrow was great
In the original bad news bears movie (1976)
As the domineering coach
Damn, I never knew this scene/video had been released. After playing that at one quarter speed, they were more than decapitated. Their bodies almost exploded from the impact of the rotors. Good grief. John Landis should’ve done jail time for what all he did on that set. It’s no wonder George Lucas cut ties with him after this.
Even if Morrow did look up, there was no way he would have had time to escape. Perhaps if they weren't in water.
So very sad. 😭
Missed seeing Lamont's stories in graveyards.
I remember this being all over the news. The trial. I was 14 when it happened. So horrible.
I can’t get over how long ago that occurred. Seems like just a few years ago.

There are a few states that want to get rid of child labor laws as I type.
there are also a few gov that want child age of consent laws gone too , the UN is a major agency pushing for it along with people in leftist sides of gov.
Yep just researched....a 9 month trial.

What a horrible accident
I remember watching combat as a lad, one of my favourite shows. RIP Vic Morrow and the two young children.😢
The pilot was getting ready to walk away from the project because he was seriously concerned about the safety of that scene. Poor guy ended up dead along with the other casualties, too. Landis got to walk away. I was a fan of his until I realised what a psychopath he is. Never even felt bad about the deaths.
